That was a good storm just passed through,my radar showed the dbz around 58 around my house,Hardest rain ive seen in years for a brief time, other than that..just blah,it was still exciting

Yeah rain & some good lighting at times.  Other than that just another quick moving storm.  I’m not going to complain.  Reports out of Armory, MS are horrific. I hate tornadoes.  Destroying homes & property & lives is all they are good for.  I hope for this area they continue to bust.

  2. Truly amazing it’s this cold in March.  This is cold that should have been in January. Soccer tomorrow is going to be cold. Have the My Buddy heater ready to go with blankets.  Just hope the wind tomorrow is not like today.  Sun does help so clouds please stay away tomorrow.  Mowed yard today in cold.  Then actually mulched the trees.  Gotta go slow with this long Covid.  Wife helps with yard.  Checked azaleas. They look to be ok with no damage yet. The Jap. maple what leaves had come out are toast. Tulips are good so far with no damage.  Blooms still closed.  Dogwood same no damage I can tell. Buds are still closed & look ok. Now tonight near 20 could do much damage.  Hoping not.

Unfortunately, considering the redbuds are blooming and that is traditionally the first of these “spring winters”, I don’t think we’re going to avoid it. This is going to be about as cold of a “redbud winter” though as I’ve ever seen. Also, I saw a dogwood today that the buds were swelling on and slightly opened. If we’d stayed warm just a little longer, the dogwoods would be blooming and we would have had both “winters” at the same time. I don’t think this freeze will hurt the dogwoods in this stage, but if it gets down into the low 20’s tomorrow night, it will fry the redbuds, pear trees, cherries, and any other blooming trees, as well as any leaves that have put out on them. Daffodils will be fine, as they can take snow and a lot more cold. I’ve seen them take low teens and not even phase them. Right now I had to cover up my blueberry bushes this evening and will again tomorrow night. I’m thinking I’m going to have my work cut out for me over the next few weeks with them, unfortunately it looks like I’ll be covering and uncovering them quite a bit!

Yes unfortunately looks like planting season will be delayed this spring.  Which is no surprise with these last few springs around here.  My redbuds have been blooming well over a week now.  The tulip trees also.  They were almost done anyway.  Yep my Jap maple new leaves will be toast.  Landscaping already looked rough from the Dec. cold spell. Heck why not finish it all off lol.  Ugly spring incoming.

I hope Tennessee does well but I’m not feeling it unfortunately. This team had no identity on offense before ZZ went out. Just gotta hope we can get the ball up court and we are lighting the 3 ball up.

Middle Finger is also the NCAA selection committee to Kansas. West? Even after Houston lost. Really? Too lazy to use contingency bracket!

So, that puts Kansas in a possible game with UCLA, in Las Vegas. No other 1-seed is so far from home. Midwest would have been KCMO which is basically a home game, but KU deserves it.

Well Jax hopefully KCMO will welcome Auburn for some Regional action. Tennesse and Kentucky will have to travel a bit. Alabama has good locations but not an easy bracket.

TA&M 7-seed is the other middle finger. Penn State got hosed there to 10-seed, so really a dual screw job. Both teams are basically playing a 4-seed first round. SMH

I was shocked that Houston lost & still got the other #1 seed.  My wife a Duke fan is feeling it.  I told her that their bracket is brutal.  I actually feel pretty good about my TIDE & their bracket.  I could see them & Duke in final 8. Ugh. I hate Duke.  Yes my wife knows.  UCLA is scary.  I thought they deserved the other #1.  Realistically any team could win it this year.  Don’t hate me too much. Roll Tide!

  6. Tomorrow here in the  midstate will be much better. Near 50.  8-10 degrees higher than today with less wind.  These cold temps are like rubbing salt in an open wound at this point after the winter we have had. If climatology is right each cold snap should be less harsh here on out.  Maybe these cold spells mean we skip the locusts, dogwood & etc winters. Winter can take a long vacation at this point. March madness is here & my team is at the top.  Which usually is a curse. March is my least favorite month except March Madness makes it less disliked.

3 nights in the mid 20’s this week, 3 more this weekend. Dogwood’s, Redbuds and Azaleas are toast. This is 2016 all over again except it was in early April then. Most deciduous shrubs that are starting to releaf will likely be lost. I’m going to cover my Japanese maple and put a light under it.

    .

My dogwoods & Azaleas are just now showing a little green.  Very little. I know I have lost some shrubs due to the temps around Christmas.  A landscaper told my neighbor that the Hollie trees/bushes are alive but will have to be hedge trimmed to get the dead frozen ends off.  He said to wait till April. Going to be costly for many this spring.

Trough is east of Hawaii on the medium and LR ensembles.  That is a signal for an EC storm threat.  That is a LONG shot for the valleys, but mountains would be in the game.  Ensembles 500mb are not warm.

I will take todays wx for soccer. Low to mid 50’s is perfect for it.  My opinion to get snow in lower elevations will take a miracle.  Plus the ground temps would melt plenty of snow falling for it to overcome for it to stick. Then you have sun angle against us also.  At this point I don’t won’t any temps. close to supporting snow.  Why? It would most likely just be a very cold rain.  Hard pass on that scenario. My fescue is loving this wx.

Thought I would drop this off here. It’s a “season preview” and prediction from a YouTube Met that I personally believe does an excellent job on his site. The cliff notes are he looked and came up with his analogs that closely match the pattern we are in, or going into to. These are his analog years…. Closest years to this year are 1976 and 2002. Next is 2018 and 2009 and last is 2012 and 1965. All of these years except for 1965 basically played out the same. A very active end of March into April for Dixie and then everything moved more towards tornado alley for May into June. All of these years had well above average tornadoes but these years did not have many significant tornadoes except for 1965. 1965 was a weird analog year because it lined up well with our setup and predicted pattern going forward but it was overly active with several significant tornado outbreaks and several significant tornadoes. Oddly enough that MTn and ETn was very active in 1965. Here’s the video, it’s about an hour long.

It will be interesting how spring plays out.  To me it seems we are in a cooling trend the last few years. Though data says we’re warming to me it seems to be going the opposite. I believe severe wx will be very quiet again this spring. I just believe springs are just getting cooler.  I could be totally wrong & hope that I’m not because I don’t care for tornadoes.

  10. The wx & patterns sure seem to be all out of whack.  Added the volcanoes & earthquakes strange times to be living in.  The west has had a winter for the ages. Though the positive is the reservoirs are full out there now.  Plus it appears there will be snow on the ground when winter begins later this year out there.  I read where the Sierras have over 700”.  That’s unbelievable.
