Might as well get used to that, it looks like that is the new base state too, I thought you and some others said that warm sst are good for big bombing snowstorms? Maybe its too much of a good thing and we are finally seeing the other side of the equation now, where its actually heating up the atmosphere, where before it was only adding more moisture and energy to storms, causing higher snowfall totals?

who are these people who think that -NAO are more common than +NAO? From everything I've seen +NAO is the base state and lasts longer than -NAO, which are fleeting and only last for short bursts. On top of that not all -NAO are good anyway, we have east and south based ones which are bad for us. So in most cases the NAO is unfavorable.

We're now at a time of year where we need anomalous cold to get a decent snow event. "doesn't look warm" isn't going to be good enough

It's almost like Manhattan has the least chance to have decent snowfall than the rest of the area, because chances are there will be more snowfall to the east, west, north and south. Manhattan is a true thread the needle location that needs all the indices to be perfectly lined up.

But what about Brooklyn, I see that places like Sheepshead Bay and etc also got 10-12 inches in that January snowstorm, so I figure Brooklyn should also be over 20"?

Something good I saw yesterday on the news was the high gas prices have seen a large surge in the purchase of EVs and also a high surge in buying of roof solar panels on Long Island. It's the fastest growing market right now even with inflation it's doing really well. And there's a large wind farm being built offshore of Coney Island by about 50 miles and the goal is to have NYC 70% powered by renewable energy by 2030.

Yesss I wonder if that would be anything like Feb 1921 but all snow that would be AMAZING. Look up Feb 1921....there was 4.5" of total precip over 3 days, 18" of it was snow, the rest was a mix.

Yep, and a 4" snow event, if it happens, is not considered a "snowy pattern" and would likely be gone by the next day. The late March early April snowy patterns that come to mind are 1982, 1996, 2003 and 2018 and all of those had anomalous blocks and even more to the point, they were all much colder a few weeks before the event (meaning NA was generally colder) than what we have going on right now.

Indeed-- I strongly believe April 1982 was more rare than March 1993 was and more historic too as well as more rare and historic than Sandy was. Do you find the October 2011 event to be equally as rare and historic?

2018 stands out because it was an extreme backloaded season while the others were snowy throughout. I figured you'd say April 1982 stands out too because how cold and snowy that storm was, as great as any of the top 10 in March.

Chris, what do you think of the early April peak? There are two April snowstorms that would make the top 10 March list too. I find April snowstorms to be more memorable than what I've seen in March. Does the early April peak result in major snowstorms like either of the March peaks (4"+)? Let's use the airports as a base.

I've kind of tried to limit myself to not doing more than 2 consecutive posts where I can lol, it's a workaround to the multiquote thing lol. We should add you to this list too, for thinking there's going to be a baseball season this year haha.

Thanks. People should respect how great April 1982 was in that it would almost make the list of Top 10 March snowfalls too! And the April 1910 storm (I hope I have the year right?) would be in the top 10 too. I should remember this storm ..6.9" 3/8-9/1984 But I do not.... all snow? And I definitely dont remember this ..8.6" 3/5/1981 too young, April 1982 which happened the following year was my first snowfall memory.

I remember this one so vividly ..6.2" 3/19/1992 It was NYC first 6"+ snowfall in YEARS, here it kept changing back and forth between snow and rain and we got like 4"...can you check the JFK numbers for this storm, please? Wasn't there another one in the early 90s when we had two snow events in March, I remember one was forecast to be 5-8" but we ended up with 3-5" instead....was that also in March 1992 or a different year?

Well at least we have a range of dates to focus on....between March 10 to March 20. Anything after that would likely be insignificant to minor (under 4"). But I think people on here dont care as long as it's something it's considered a snowy pattern.
