Santa the Poet Claus

Maybe not, because it started as very heavy sleet. It sounded like hailstones hitting the ground outside.
-
its very heavy sleet lol there was no light anything, it started as very heavy sleet
-
Following the current storm is so much more fun than following model simulations lol.

Yes, the cold air is banked to the east. This is similar to those suppressed systems that hit west of us but the further east you go the further south the snow gets. This time the cold air works in our favor.
-
this is a warmer and drier version of 1993-94
-
We'll get something from each of these next 2 storms, enjoy it, who knows when it'll snow again after next Tuesday.

Going under 20" is expected though, we were close during the 70s and 80s (didn't we average 19 inches in that decade)? Looking at the JFK 30 year average 1951-1980 and 1961-90 (the ones I grew up with), JFK was only barely over 20"...... around 21.6 inches for the 30 year average if I remember correctly.

For long island any changeover might hold off until after midnight, it looks like the further east you are the stronger the cold air will hold.
-
Something I find interesting on the maps is that the cold air is deeper the further east you go, so for example N NJ could be pinging while it's snowing in Suffolk County (both north and south shore.)

If we had modern tech back 1970 - 1999, the busts would be just as bad. Chaos theory always trumps modern technology.
-
it's not unscientific it shows there is some factor not being accounted for that is making the same outcome happen again and again. Probably having to do with the fast Pacific flow.
-
a modern version of the Blizzard of 1888 (somewhat warmer obviously.) We had an inch of rain followed by a foot of snow.
-
Looks like South Shore will be the place to be for the Tuesday event, what are you thinking, 4" JFK 2" LGA?
-
It's snowed on the night before the superbowl in the semirecent past..... in 2015-16 we had a nice snow event just before the super bowl (4-6 inches), this was the second largest storm after the 30" megasnowstorm. We had two 4-6 inch events that season in addition to the 30+ inch blockbuster. The first one dropped a crane in Manhattan tragically killing someone and the second one happened on the day before the superbowl.

let's see if we can relive some 1993-94 memories with a hard crust of ice that we'll need an axe to chop through ha

The one that happened a month later was worse, 3/2007-- 5-6 inches of sleet and I couldn't open any of my doors.

1955 through 1970 was the earlier period. It would be interesting to go even further back in history to see if we had an earlier such better in the 1930s and 1940s.

I think you mean 1955 through 1970 not 1955 through 1960
