right you can have a colder winter with very little snow, this happened a lot during the 80s...another question is even if the pattern breaks towards the latter third of January and February ends up milder, could there be a return to colder/snowier weather in March as has been the case with quite a few la ninas?

Our cold spells seem to be much shorter than they used to be (but the same goes for our heat waves, 3-4 day heatwaves at most, longer ones seem to have become rare.)

Yep it reminds me of what we had in 93, 95, etc.

Interesting Roger, so there's been no below 20 temps before November 15th? Looks like 1987 was the only other year in this list in my lifetime, the same year we had the Veteran's Day snowstorm? Surprised that 1976 isn't on this list since it was such a cold fall and early winter. Nevermind I just saw that 1976 made the list on the final day.

1966-67 was an absolutely amazing winter, starting with that big Christmas snowstorm. Don't see anything like that happening this winter, the only real resemblance is that 1966 was a drier than normal year and was also transitioning from an el nino to a la nina (or was it cold neutral?) if I remember correctly. That 37.4 is considered 1.7 below normal for December is absolutely wild Don..... I remember when our December normal was around 36 degrees. Does normal or average even mean anything anymore? Also wild Don, before this storm the NYC two year snowfall was under 10 inches?

Same reason they don't trim the vegetation to have more accurate summer temps. Laziness.

Lost in all this is that Phoenix has had a truly WILD year. Set records for consecutive record number of 100+ days as well as highest average monthly and seasonal temperatures. October was pretty wild for all of us because a large part of the country had zero or nearly zero rainfall that month.

Are these two good analogs for this winter, Don? Both were la ninas that also came after el ninos, although they were much stronger than this one (and the la ninas those two winters were also much stronger.) A few moderate events but no big ones.

I noticed some of the other winters mentioned where we had 1"+ between the start of winter and Christmas were also la ninas where we didn't have huge snowstorms but at least we had some moderate events. 1983-84 and 1998-99. You can get these in a la nina especially a la nina after an el nino. You just don't want a big thaw in January and then the winter to suddenly end.

It was snowing pretty hard here for awhile between 7 am and 8:30 am and abruptly ended at 9 am when the sun came out. Do we have the updated liquid equivalents for all these stations too?

Nice 10 AM final update has JFK at 2.5" and many spots in Nassau County including the south shore at 3.0"-3.1"
