  1. When the STJ got cranking mid-January it was a lot of fun. There was a 1-2" rainstorm on Sunday into Monday, followed by the heavy wet snow on Thursday. Then the bottom fell out of the temps. The second snowstorm on Sunday that fringed your area started with temps in the teens, and afterward there were a couple of below-zero nights outside of the cities. I had 12"+ from both of the storms in Silver Spring.
  2. Coldest morning of the season so far. 14.8°
  3. That's a noble pursuit. I put a snow stick out every winter. Some years it doesn't get much use, but it's always good to have. Twice I have seen a 36" stick completely covered: January 1978 in western Md. and February 2010 here. January 2016 fell about an inch shy before it compacted.
  4. Pretty vigorous snow shower here. Quick coating on all surfaces after a cold day. High was 35.
  5. Flurries here for much of the morning. 31 degrees with a WC of 21.
  6. Over an inch of liquid for the event now. 2.82" for December.
  7. Been locked in at 32.2 degrees all afternoon and evening here. Even with a pouring rain for several hours there is still a decent amount of snow cover and even some still hanging in the trees, particularly the pines.
  8. With 1.7" this morning, my yard has its snowiest December since 2013. In fact, 1.7" matches the total of the past 5 Decembers combined.
  9. Mix line moving north on I-81. Now between Inwood and Martinsburg. Winchester has freezing rain. Still all snow here.
  10. Light snow and 31 degrees. 1.5" on the ground.
  11. IAD reporting light snow with their 11:52 ob.
  12. 1-2” per hour per the mesoscale discussion from SPC.
  13. Hit a high of 46 before noon. Down to 39 now with a dewpoint of 21 under clear skies. Looks like it should be cold enough for any/all moisture that makes it here.
  14. These are just ones I personally experienced: December 31-Jan 1, 1970 was a 6-12" snowfall for I-95 between DC and Baltimore. January 5, 1980 was a 4-8" storm. January 7-8, 1988 was generally 6-8". December 27-28, 1990 was 5-8". There were others, like January 2, 1925 (6-10"), and December 26-27, 1909 (8-12") and quite a few more that were 3-6" storms.
  15. Pretty dynamic system rolling through. Even with 850s well above 0, Hagerstown reported mixed precip last hour, and Bedford, PA reported snow at 32. Just heard a few fumbles of thunder here in a downpour at 35 degrees.
  16. Just hit 33.0 here with drizzle. The high for the day so far, after a low of 28. Up to 0.21" of rain today.
  17. 18Z GFS coming into line with the EC, UK and CMC now with a nice thump for N + W zones. Can that hold for 3 days ?
  18. I remember Pete. He was part of the AOL chat rooms back in the early 90's, which was the first weather discussion I found online. I'm pretty sure he was a member at Eastern, but not sure if he made the switch to American ? Maybe in the NYC forums if he's still around.
  19. Yep. Our last white Christmas here, as we still had some snow left from the 2" that fell early on Christmas Eve. I picked up 5.7" from the 12/26 storm on 1.24" liquid.
  20. Check out today's 12Z CMC. Hopefully it's correct for the first time.
  21. Snowing nicely here now. Slushy accumulation beginning on car tops. 35 degrees.
  22. Just like that the temp has plunged. Lost 4 degrees in the 40 minutes since my post. Now 39 with rain drops getting larger.
