  1. 10:1 has me at 11" and kuchera at 21". What a fun hobby/profession we all have
  2. Seems to be doing a great job resolving the topography here. Especially the catoctin ridge running up between Frederick and Washington counties
  3. My own brother in law texted me this morning to say "Why do none of you meteorologist have any clue how much snow is coming? I'm seeing 4 inches and I'm seeing 20+" I think he is only half joking, but that's certainly how the general public digests the information out there right now.
  4. Not sure how many of you are CoCoRaHS reporters, but I thought this post was helpful on their main page. Especially since the reporting time is going to be during our most pukiest snow period. Winter Alert! Here are the basics for reporting your "Gauge Catch" when it snows: Remove the funnel and center tube and place them by your kitchen sink, and leave the large cylinder mounted outside to receive any and all precipitation that falls. When it is time to measure - bring the snow-filled gauge inside and let it melt. *Watch this short, animated video for how to do it quickly by adding pre-measured warm water using your inner tube* Once melted you can carefully pour the water into the inner tube using the funnel - making sure to subtract any amount of warm water that was added. Enter this amount in same place on the data entry form where you enter your rainfall amount - called "Gauge Catch". If you experience freezing rain (click here to read about the differences between frozen precipitation types and freezing rain), still follow the procedure above, but also report the thickness of the ice in your comments. Make sure to only melt and measure the ice that freezes on the inside of the gauge. Optional reporting of freezing rain can be found in the left-hand menu of your data entry page or click here to access more information including a link to enter an ice accretion impact report. Here, the training guide goes over how to report the thickness of the ice, but if you only have impacts to report, and photos, you can use the links or QR code to submit a report from your smartphone.
  5. Reminds me of the old Jeb walk posts from years ago. Sounds like an awesome plan!
  6. My wife is in education. The only people in the world who are as obsessed with weather as meteorologists are teachers lol
  7. Exactly. People at work are quoting it and then I feel like a dick when I try to correct them based on actual forecasts and projections
  8. Anyone else getting annoyed with Apple Weather creating insane forecasts and people believing them? I'm currently in Rockville and it's saying 20-25" on Sunday which is so far beyond any real projections. Is this just my pet peeve right now?
  9. ha I've got an old yardstick that I usually lash to some rebar. Does the trick but doesn't look so nice
  10. Love this. Just went to amazon to see if I could get a similar one quickly but none of them get here before Sunday
  11. This seems quite fair. Good luck!
  12. My SIL texted me this morning to ask about how much they will get (along the PA/MD border). I told her a range but that everyone around here is trying to manage expectations since we have all been tricked and disappointed by snow forecasts over the last decade
  13. I've already had 3 people send me this asking if it's real. I told them TWC app forecast of 8-12 is more realistic and to never trust apple weather
  14. 1 For sure! The CoCoRaHS observations for the last 30 days. That's me with the 0.90" in Frederick. Your area looks well watered
  15. You know what was cool? Being completely missed again yesterday. Crunchy grass is good, right? 0.90" over the last 30 days IMBY
  16. If it's not being watered consistently, it's dead around here
  17. Better than my T on the north side of town
  18. I always suspect that my station runs about 1 degree too cold (vs the surrounding PWS's), but -4 for my low this morning https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/KMDFREDE168
  19. This might be the dumbest question I have ever asked, but I promised my kids a trip to Ski Liberty on Sunday. Does anyone know of they stay open during a snowstorm? Yes I know how ridiculous this sounds...
