  1. 0.5" as of 7:05pm looks to be my storm total for SSW Franconia/Kingstowne, as snow has stopped. The last band was pretty but I don't think the rates kept up with melting, and unlike the earlier band the roads never cared.
  2. As rates dropped to almost nothing on this wave, ran out and measured 3/8" to submit for a spotter report, SSW Franconia/Kingstowne.
  3. Driving south from DC down 395 the progression was roughly: Before 3:10 - all or almost all rain 3:15 - Flipped to mostly snow around Seminary Rd 3:35 - got home to SSW Franconia/Kingstowne, mulch and some grass accumulation Now (4pm) - car has been topped, starting to stick to pavement Expectations exceeded for south of town. .
  4. So my wife and I are doing an art class in Alexandria, and class is tonight. I call the organization up around 11am to ask what the status is, given all the other cancellations and early closings that have come in. Initial answer is "we are going to wait a little longer and see," which seemed very sensible to me given the chance of a bust. Ok, great. I asked when they'll make the final call and I got a "we're not sure. It's not doing anything here right now (note: at 11am) so I don't know what the big deal is." I made some comment about trying to figure out my plans given the OPM early dismissal and I got a "the government's letting out early today?" My faith in their judgment is not what it was at the beginning of the call... Note my expectations are low for the storm tonight, but seriously, at least glance at the news...
  5. 9.0" at 11:15pm in SSW Franconia/Kingstowne. Likely my storm total, since I won't measure again tonight. Still light snow.
  6. App alerts have come through, too. It’s a double secret shutdown. .
  7. 7.1" at 5:20pm, SSW Franconia/Kingstowne, for a pre-making dinner measurement.
  8. 6.25" at 12:45pm in SSW Franconia/Kingstowne. Thought I was in a lull but it's just really light right now.
  9. Measured 2.5" in SSW Franconia/Kingstowne for my spotter report before heading to bed.
  10. Measured 0.5" at 18:35 in Kingstowne/SSW Franconia, as I went to check the meat in my smoker (which has a no-snow radius around it).
  11. Went to Wegman's this morning, not thinking about the snow. Relieved to see that my neighbors have not forgotten how to panic, nor how to prepare for the mass incontinence caused by not being able to leave one's house for a few hours and/or excessive consumption of bread and eggs. All 28 registers were going with long lines at each. Among the busiest days I've seen since the store opened!
  12. Been up in the Harper’s Ferry area all day. Point & click apps had the high for today at 65 when we left home. At 2:30pm it’s 50 and the morning fog has not lifted. .
  13. SSW Franconia/Kingstowne, Fairfax County 11/15/18: 2.0" (est.)
  14. An outdoor fire. A duck cooking in the Big Green Egg. A nice glass of wine. This is what fall is all about. (The duck turned out great.) .
  15. Foggy Bottom area was all sleet when I went out to lunch a bit before noon but flipped to rain sometime before 12:30pm. Expectations far exceeded.
  16. The wife measured >2" in SSW Franconia/Kingstowne before the flip to sleet about an hour ago. Seeing flakes again out my office window near Foggy Bottom; it had been all sleet when I was last outside 30 min ago.
  17. My wife says she measured >1" on the cold surfaces in our backyard (Kingstowne) just now, though I cannot vouch for her snow-measuring technique.
  18. Leaving the house (SSW Franconia/Kingstowne) at 6:20am I had a snow-sleet mix car-topper. Driving into the District, it switched to pure snow for about 10 min as I drove through Alexandria and was mostly sleet by the time I hit the Pentagon. Only saw accumulation on mulch. The (wonderfully accurate) car sensor had me at 34 the whole drive.
