  1. So far my peak gust today out of the south is 41mph. Last Friday my peak gust was 38mph out of the NW and last Thursday my peak gust was 40mph out of the west.
  2. So far in my area, very similar to recent wind events.
  3. I went to Jones Beach did not get a gust to 40, I admit I was only there for 15 minutes. I have a vantage pro 2 wireless which is considered pretty accurate. It is 33ft up as to weather bureau specifications. With the wind out of the south I get little obstruction. I believe my 41 mph so far is more in line with most places than 50-60mph.
  4. Yes this has been around a long time. From what I see in my area, the 39-46 fits right in with the 41mph. high gust that I have recorded.
  5. There are always extreme gusts, especially at airports and other open locations. I think most areas have gotten wind gusts in the 35 to 45 mph zone.
  6. If you don't have an anemometer you really can't guess what the wind gusts are. I just got back from Jones Beach with a handheld kestrel and the wind was a consisent 25 to 35mph. That was about 7 feet above the ground. Meanwhile back at my house the peak gust is now 41mph and sustained 20mph.
  7. So far not to bad here. Peak gust 40mph. 1.35 inches of rain. This afternoon is suppose to be the worst.
  8. Peak gust here now up to 40mph.
  9. 1.15 inch of rain so far here.
  10. Average speed here 17mph. now gusting to 34mph. Numerous gusts now over 30. This is at my house, anemometer 33 ft high with a non obstructive southern view. Winds are out of the south so I should be getting accurate readings. JFK, like down at the beach, is open with little to obstruct the wind.
  11. Windy here, gusting to 28mph at my house. Expect it to just get higher.
  12. Went to 32 degrees here this morning, with frost. Tomorrow looks real interesting.
  13. Monday is looking real interesting at this point.
  14. The extremely cold winter continues in Alaska with much of central and northern Alaska 10-40 below zero this morning.
  15. 26 degrees here this morning.
  16. Yea that lake affect snow band drifted north this morning and Watertown got hammered. It has since drifted even further north but is expected to drift further south as this day progresses.
  17. Current temperature at Amundsen Scot weather station in the Antarctic is -37 degrees Fahrenheit.
  18. Yes and the Polar Vortex has been giving extreme cold where they are suppose to get it, the far north. The Bering Sea ice extent has actually reached the 1981-2010 norm. The ice extent in the Arctic is more than it has been in years. Don't know how long it will last but at least it has put a little dent in the ice melting.
  19. 24 at my house this morning. Meanwhile Manhattan only dropped to 39.
  20. It has been so cold up north this winter, the Bering Sea ice extent is actually within the normal range of the 1981-2010 median.
  21. 39.9 degrees here. I think I heard a sleet pellet hit my skylight. That would make this my 5th biggest storm of the season.
  22. Current temperatures in upstate NY, around the Adirondack area, are near 15 below zero.
  23. I had a peak gust of 48mph. at my house. My nearby airport, Farmingdale, had 56mph. Airports usually report high readings as they are in open spaces. Sometimes folks post that the wind is this or that where they are but they really don't know unless they have their own weather station. I am listening to the wind outside my house right now and at times it sounds real strong but it is only gusting now to about 30mph as being recorded by the anemometer above my roof.
  24. Wind really picking up here, just gusted to 44mph out of the west. Barometer on the rise.
