  1. It’s partly sunny at the moment but around 1:15 this afternoon there were some flurries at the dog park at John Rudy.
  2. Sorry to hear that. Hopefully we all see significant improvement this winter and next spring.
  3. A lot less rain than expected here, too; just a hair over .5” in the rain gauge this morning. Not too terribly unusual for my neighborhood, we almost always get less precip than forecast and less than surrounding areas, but I thought we were looking at a minimum of .75 this time.
  4. As of 10:45 am, it’s 38 degrees and the flurries have just become a flizzard here in East York. First snowflakes of the season — happy winter, everyone.
  5. Those of you who keep detailed stats might be able to confirm or correct me if I’m wrong but I think it was summer of 2021 that there was a massive heat wave over much of the western and middle portions of the US, with unprecedented heat in the Pacific Northwest (and I believe in places like Wisconsin and Minnesota). Here on the forum we kept dreading the heat’s inevitable expansion east, but it never really happened. We only had typical heat throughout the summer —some really hot days, to be sure— but nothing unexpected. Hopefully that will be the case this year, too. September is right around the corner.
  6. Yes, my own rain gauge showed a hair over .50. Hopefully more to come next week. We still plan to be very frugal with water usage but the water pressure seemed a little better this morning than it has for the past couple months.
  7. Yeah, we’ve had very little all week. Striking out so far. Hoping something comes our way soon.
  8. Same here in East York. A couple minutes of some very light rain and that was it. On a related note, I haven’t yet seen any fireflies here this season. Most years they’re here by early June and some years as early as late May. I’ve been loving the chilly overnight lows and the low dew points, but I’m sure that’s contributing to the delayed firefly season (or lightning bugs, as the kids around here call them). Pains me when anything abbreviates their season since they’re already in significant decline.
  9. I don’t know how accurate the iweather.net digital radar is but it’s showing .65 for the past 24 hours and a total of 1.47 for the past 72, which is probably pretty accurate. We always seem to have lower rainfall totals than elsewhere in the LSV. Guess some of us will still have to keep our fingers crossed for more rain in the next few weeks.
  10. I always worry about this but the more extreme winds don’t seem to come to fruition here and I’m grateful every single time. But we do have some strong winds (in the 25 mph range) at times when it’s not in the forecast or mentioned at all, like what Bubbler mentioned upthread. Happens at least 3 or 4 times each spring. But thankfully, we haven’t experienced any 50-60 mph winds.
  11. Couldn’t agree more. Might as well get your Speedo out of the closet too; I’m rooting for mid 50s to low 60s. (Sorry, snowhounds. Wish you guys could get a foot of snow and a few weeks of cold to maintain it while my neighborhood has upper 50s and sunshine.)
  12. I’m ready for spring at this point and I can do without the “raw” and “windy”. We really do need the rain around here, though. I just hope, come April, we continue to see temps more on the milder side and that “extreme” this year means things like thunderstorms, rather than life-threatening events.
  13. Gorgeous, sunny, 63 right now with a light breeze. Was 56 and quite a bit more windy when we first went outside around 12:25, so it feels like a massive increase in temperature over the past 35 minutes or so.
  14. We had snow here on April 22, 2021. Didn’t accumulate on paved surfaces but my yard had maybe an inch (a bit more than a dusting, in any case) of snow before it was all over.
  15. Amazing how much difference the wind and cloud cover can make, even with the temp up to 50.
  16. About what I’m expecting. I’ve been luckier than most; I’ve woken up 2 or 3 times to a nice dusting of snow (coating to 1 inch or so), and have had a few opportunities to enjoy some flurries here. Probably still unsatisfying to most winter-weather fans, but not quite the complete shutout some of you have experienced. This is exactly 7 years ago today, from the Jan 2016 storm. I don’t think I captured it as well as I’d hoped but the left of the photo is the wall of snow after shoveling the driveway and the top of the snow was a few inches above his head.
  17. As of 12 noon, approximately an inch of snow on the ground. Been flurrying on and off all morning, anything from barely-there, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it to a bit heavier but for the moment it’s legit snowing.
  18. It seemed colder to me too, in part because we somewhat abruptly shifted to cooler temps around the 20th or 21st of September, as opposed to having the summer-like temps extend well into October. Our September temps for the last 10 days or so (and extending into early October) were normal to below normal. We had milder periods throughout October and November but if memory serves those were, again, interspersed throughout a baseline of normal and occasionally below-normal temps (in contrast to the “new normal” well above average temps of recent years) December was so busy it went by in a blur but my very imperfect memory suggests it was *close* to normal but on the milder side throughout most of the month. So fall (IMBY at least) seemed to be on the cooler side this year but December seemed more a continuation of fall than the start of met winter. ETA: Not to stray too far off topic, I’m looking forward to the end of next week and the possibility (finally!) of seeing some snowy weather. If we get a solid couple weeks of opportunities and some hits out of those, and maybe a couple more weeks with enough cold to maintain some snowpack, I’ll be looking at this as a decent winter.
  19. Same, my ideal winter has plenty of snow but with a lot of thaws and warm spells mixed in. I probably say it too much, but any day I can be outside with the dog for at least an hour is a good day for me. And if I only need jeans and a hoodie (or lately, jeans/t shirt), I’m not complaining.
  20. Oh man, SO sorry to hear that. Had a recent bereavement here too and while it’s soul-crushing whenever it happens, it hits particularly hard around the holidays. This internet stranger is feeling your loss.
  21. As of about 10:10 it was snowing here - not just flurrying but snowing. Seems to be slowing down quite a bit now and there’s nothing sticking yet, but hoping we end with at least a dusting. Very happy either way with the mood flakes.
  22. Surfaces (including trees, etc) still have a solid coat of ice here and there’s a slushy freezing rain falling right now. WU app says it’s 33 degrees; nearby ambient stations are at 32.5 and 32.7. I’d love to get some snow with this, but I know better than to expect it. Edited to say, untreated surfaces are still coated with ice. As far as I know, roads are okay but I’m still glad to be working from home today.
  23. 39, partly-to-mostly sunny and pretty mild on sporadic moments when the wind is calm. But so far we’re getting consistent canderson wind gusts that make it feel significantly colder. My point and click Weather Underground app says we’re getting wind gusts up to 27 mph and that it feels like it’s 30 out. That sounds/feels about right.
  24. As of 12:39 we’re getting some precip here - not quite flurries but not rain, either - something frozen or partially frozen, and very tiny “drops”, like frozen drizzle. I don’t think it quite counts as freezing rain, but it looks and feels very wintry out right now. Edit: coming down much steadier now, and with some legit flurries mixed in. I was expecting the precip to start at 2 and for us to have nothing but rain. My dog has a vet appointment today at 3 so I’m really hoping this doesn’t turn out to be an overperformer.
  25. 8pm, very balmy 70 right now and 67.1 dewpoint. Lots of crickets, too; feels and sounds like a late-summer night.
