I also notice that both the summer and spring threads were started on or near the vernal equinox and summer solstice rather than the meteorological start dates. I’ve come to appreciate both in their own way but since I grew up following the astronomical dates, part of me will always think of those as the “official” start of each season.

I was wondering this too — Bubbler, Cashtown, anyone else in that area, is the drought officially over now?

As of 11AM we have 1.56 imby in Springettsbury township, York county. I’m far enough south/central that I might be spared the higher totals shown for northern York county, Dauphin and Cumberland. Hope everyone is safely riding this out. (Edit: thanks to Bubbler for sharing the iweathernet link; I don’t have a rain gauge)

I know a lot of people here are/were disappointed with the persistent warm temps last fall but here in York, I thought it was perfect weather. We had days that were overcast, chilly and blustery, cold and rainy, cool and sunny (perfect hoody weather), but those were regularly interspersed with warm, sunny days. If memory serves, the warm stretches were often lengthy enough to make it feel like late summer/early fall even into the first week of November. I think that was a common complaint last year. But then we had the first winter storm on December 16th-17th, which was a nice start to winter. If I’m being completely honest, I’m really hoping for a repeat of last fall.

Maybe it WAS the same system then. Wherever it was, it was a sight to behold and lit up the entire northern/northwestern sky.

You know, on my phone I don’t see locations unless I click on profiles and I was probably seeing something different from what Blizzard of 93 was seeing. (We did eventually get a brief downpour here with a good bit of thunder)

I’m seeing that too, just shy of 10 PM. Amazing to see the entire northern sky lit up like that! No thunder, wind, or anything else that would suggest a storm heading my way; I’m guessing those of you to my north will have all the fun this time. This is one of the warmest evenings I can recall so far this summer. Weather Underground is telling me it’s 85 out, dew point 72 and feels like 92. Definitely concur with the “feels like 92”.

Just started pouring here about 10 minutes ago and there’s an impressive thunder and lightning show. Hopefully it finds its way to you and MtJoySnowman. (Can’t imagine it won’t, but I suppose stranger things have happened…)

Ominous clouds overhead here and some significant wind gusts. Right now it appears the action is all happening to my north while on its way east (heading toward Itstrainingtime, from the looks of it). The wind is whistling around the eaves right now like there’s a blizzard going on — a taste of winter weather yet to come.

Would be a pleasant 75 degrees but for the dew point of 72 (as of 8:30 AM). Still not bad at all when we get the occasional breeze but oy vey, it is sticky. Definitely starting to feel like the Dog Days of summer here. (My dog says he objects to this convention of calling the late-summer stretch of heat and humidity “dog days”. I told him I don’t make the rules)

I notice it more from mid-July onward, but it stands out to me too. Every year I’m a little sad when the daylight hours start getting shorter. I used to love fall weather (still do, really) but the limited daylight can get really tough. Hopefully we’ll have lots of activity here on our central PA thread(s). I find myself appreciating ALL the seasons and weather variations so much more thanks to the enthusiasm of our cold and snow-chasers

Not into the higher 95+ temps but I love summer, and I love the extended daylight. We’re not even out of July yet and I’m already not wanting it to end. This summer has been quite nice so far; a something-for-everyone mix of higher temps with cooler than average periods scattered throughout. I know a lot of us still need more rain, but even there it seems like most of us have done at least a little better than last year. Hopefully we continue to fend off the extreme, sustained heat that’s been baking the west and midwest this season.

I don’t remember where the fires were last fall (I thought it was the usual west coast/PNW areas) but last year, the third week of September would have been crystal clear blue skies but here in York we had the same opaque white blanket of smoke most of the week. Edited to add that the wildfire smoke had made the WGAL forecast that time — Joe Calhoun had said we’d be having picture perfect fall weather but that we wouldn’t really be able see or appreciate it because of the haze, and he wasn’t wrong.

Just a lurker here but for what it’s worth, I love that this forum is so active during the warmer months (and don’t mind at all that sports and other interests are sometimes thrown into the mix).

Very light rain started here about 10 minutes ago and seems to have already stopped. Lots of low clouds to the north but it’s looking like this one will pass by without much fanfare beyond some impressive thunder to the east and a really awesome looking slate gray sky. Edited to add: Boy, was I wrong. It’s pouring now. Hope everyone who still needs rain gets a helping of this.

Hearing the first cicadas in central/east York county today.

About 45 minutes so far of light but (mostly) steady rain in central/east York county. It’s about 75 and I can almost hear the parched grass and shrubbery sighing in relief. I visited Alaska in the mid 90s, traveled between Anchorage and Fairbanks, and yes, it was absolutely stunning. Homer is one of the towns that sticks out in my memory, but it was all quite breathtaking. Glad you’re getting to see it, Carlisle!

Yes, that’s true, and it could just be that the times I was out for any extended period happened to be the warmest/more humid periods that month. In addition to my memory of the July heat being “superimposed” onto June and distorting my memory of it. Psychologically, the lack of rain and the worry about our well running dry probably also affected my overall perception of the temps last summer.

Yes, I’ve been thinking about how it is that this June has seemed very pleasant so far where my memory of last June (and last summer in general) is that it was oppressive from start to finish. I think canderson was right that even with lower temps overall, the omnipresent humidity made it seem worse to me. (I also think the excessive heat in July distorted my memory of the entire summer). Reminds me of what a few of you were saying about Orlando; that the high temps themselves aren’t extreme but the constant humidity from May to October is what makes it unpleasant.

We planned our festivities for the 3rd this year. I was digging last week’s look that had us in the mid 70s, even when it included chance of showers. I got a pretty deep cut on my finger last week while pruning and doing general garden/landscape maintenance. Wonder if the weather gods would accept that as a “blood sacrifice” and reward us with a mid 70s - low 80s and sunny weekend with periods of abundant rain before Saturday and after Sunday …

Thank you, I thought maybe the humidity (and not just the actual temps) was what made last June and much of August feel so oppressive. July was a double whammy with the record setting heat.

I wasn’t sure if I was misremembering, but my memory of last summer was that it felt like a start-to-finish heat wave. Even June and August seemed ridiculously hot but that might have been more an issue with insane humidity than heat. I went for a long, leisurely walk with my elderly dog tonight between 7:40 and 9:00. When we were coming back the garage thermometer showed 67 degrees. It was a glorious evening. Normally I really enjoy the heat but my tail-wagging companion doesn’t do so well in it anymore, so I have a much greater appreciation for these cooler days and nights. (and a newfound dread for the real heat we’re probably going to see soon)

Yep! Been in the office so far but just stepped outside and there’s steady rainfall. As of 6:15ish this morning it was just on and off drizzle, so I don’t know how long it’s been raining like this, but I hope we (all of us in this area) get a lot of it.
