  1. "On February 12, 2010, the CDC released updated estimate figures for swine flu, reporting that, in total, 57 million Americans had been sickened, 257,000 had been hospitalized and 11,690 people had died (including 1,180 children) due to swine flu from April through to mid-January."

Just stay home people. This is only going to get worse, don’t risk exposing yourself to those who have it and don’t know it. It’s been spreading for weeks.

They just canceled my outpatient rehab program :(  They say they are gonna try and do it via web conference.

As an example, NY state (as of the Governor's briefing today) has ~700 confirmed cases and 65 people currently in ICU beds. Beyond the confirmed cases, it's hard to know how many people are asymptomatic, so I take your point that the percentage could be lower when factoring in these unobserved cases. The troubling thing is that the number of confirmed cases increases exponentially with time, unless serious social distancing measures are implemented. Italy has *only* 24k cases but its health care system is overrun with COVID-19 patients in critical condition. 16 days ago, Italy had about the same number of cases NY has currently.

I think a more appropriate question is how many (thousands) of people already died from the Corona Virus in this country already?  Think about it..

  4. @heavy_wx If (conservatively) 50,000 people in the US have Corona Virus (JHU) and probably more accurately a half million (read the article) and as you report ~10 of COVID-19 case are serious enough to require ICU treatment.... how are our hospitals not overwhelmed currently?

~10% of COVID-19 cases are serious enough to require ICU treatment. The US hospital system has a limited capacity to provide people with those resources so if there are too many cases at the same time, the system is overloaded and people will not be able to get the treatment they need. Social distancing measures to limit the number of cases occurring at the same time are essential to make sure we don't have that situation - essentially what is happening right now in Italy and Spain - here in the US.

if people haven’t registered that we are going into an Italy/Spain/China style lockdown within the next 1-2 weeks... they are gonna be in for a shock.

My bar is 7-11.  If they close 7-11 then this is real.

Asymptomatic transmission seems possible, FWIW. But “social distancing” with a larger group is possible, as long as everyone holds up their end of the bargain and actually only hangs out with people in that group. It takes one person to screw it up.

Well I went to starbucks this morning.. so I guess we are doomed!

We’re not talking about stopping it.  We’re trying to slow it down.

The best thing to do to lessen that impact would be to tell people not to show up at the emergency room if they get a cold.  Realistically the worst thing that can happen is that too many people show up to the hospital asking for a test that doesnt exist.  And even you do test positive, it is not gonna change the prognosis or the treatment.. Go home, get some rest, maybe take some antibiotics so it doesnt evolve in to a bacterial infection that could actually kill you..

Wait, so you're saying that the tournament shouldve been held someway, somehow?

Of course they should have.  Tournament or no tournament  you are not going to stop the spread of a virus.

My family and five other neighbor go is families have agreed that we will allow our kids to play together outside and that we will “socially distance” ourselves from one another until and if one of us gets sick. This is because we can’t honestly allow ourselves to think that our kids will be able to handle being cooped up inside and not being able to play together. We have all agreed that we will limit ourselves to this and not socially interact with other families until we’re at the end of this situation.

Two of the parents need to go into the office - the rest can be at home.

One family just told us that two of their boys had low-grade fevers yesterday, so they’re staying put now.

What a tough situation to be in. We realize that our approach isn’t ideal, but I do think we’re being responsible and realistic while allowing our kids to have some sort of normalcy in their daily lives.

Thats kinda of the same approach Walmart took.. in deciding whether or not they should protect their employees.. they sent everyone home from the Ivory Tower.. allowing all corporate employees to WFH.  But when the rubber hit the road and they had to decide whether or not they were going to shut down stores.. it was as if someone said.. "Close down the stores? That would be like this is real"

So when you pressed with the prospect of actually having to entertain your kids for 24 hours a day with no end in sight.. under the same roof.. common sense starts to take over.

NFL Draft has been postponed and will not be held in Las Vegas as planned.

My guess is it will go on behind the scenes, via conference calls etc. with no fanfare.

Canceling the NCAA Tournament was the gut punch.  It was like.. "your not gonna take this seriously... then how about we cancel your little tournament.. "

I can deal with the kids being home.. I can deal with the empty toilet paper aisles.. shoot I can even deal with them canceling the St Patrick's day events... but canceling the NCAA tournament is talking it a little too far.  Someone should have stepped in and did something about that.

    So dumb.

In the end it’s gonna be a ton of money spent, ruined events, and all for nothing.

I don’t care what they do, you will never contain the spread of this. So live life and let’s get on with it.

I can speak for the validity of this but I was listening to a guy on the radio yesterday and he was supposedly quoting stats from the cdc. He said that 80% of those who will contract this will require no medical attention. He also said that the average age of those who have died was 80!! He also said that ALL of them had underlying medical conditions. Now I don’t know if he was just speaking about the US or not.

Regardless, my hunch is that once we have a valid number of cases to base conclusions off of, meaning at least 500,000 us cases, that we are going to see a very low death rate and a specific set of victims.

Im not saying throw caution to the wind. Take precautions. But to let this thing tank economies, bring daily life to a standstill is ridiculous. The media is fanning these flames because it gets attention. We live in an age of sensationalism where logic and reason seemingly have no place.

Oh well, rant over. But I can tell you that I’m one person who is not going to let fear of a virus, a cold virus at that, keep me from doing anything I want to do.

I cant tell you how much I agree with what you are saying.. finally someone with audacity to come out and say the obvious.  given the fact that most people dont get sick and when they do test, they see the disease being transmitted at a very high rate, I wouldnt be surprised if I am carrying the virus right now.. leaving the common sense stuff aside I think that there is a bigger social issue that is going on here.. it feels like overnight we have become an altruistic society... one that views every situation as right or wrong... with no room for people to make their own informed decision.   There is no risk - reward analysis.

Look, I am not an expert, but these are the best looking snow maps we have had under 10 days on EPS in over a month and it is the only game in town for the next two weeks.  At least until 0Z tonight we have a seat in the cheap seats of the snow bowl stadium.

its not really inside 10 days. And we have seen better snow maps in the 7-10 day period.
