I was in Rochester (Beaver County, not New York), this morning, and got 1", measured on the deck of an equipment trailer, between 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. The grass was snowy, but pavement was just wet. Drove 1/2 an hour back to our site in Economy, and was surprised to find 2 1/2" on the trucks and trailers parked there.
Elevation ?

I haven't been tracking tightly lately but today's event came as a bit of a surprise. Where's all that mix and rain?
Since today overperformed, I have to imagine we're looking at a similar occurrence this weekend. Either that or we get plain rain instead.
The flakes this morning, especially, were massive. Dinner plates.
IMO a muted CAD/SE flow helped everyone (sans the 119 corridor).
A nice example of what our winters would be like without CAD.

Based on the traffic cams, I-70 has been the R/S line all morning.
-
Probably some white rain tomorrow, although above 1100 ft maybe some grass covering.

Weird CAD setup for tomorrows system.
Weekend has an odd semi progressive look.

Only needs to hold for 10 more days.
Any even a longer shot would be a March 1995 redux for Mon/Tue.
I remember the kids at school being pissed at me for saying it was gonna snow the next day, after being in the low 70’s. Lol -

Look for March 12th weekend for something. It is the Pittsburgh St Patrick's Day Parade.
Only needs to hold for 10 more days.

This winter was an absolute dud. ONe underperformer that up to 24 hours out was showing potential of a huge storm, and a couple of clippers and OK wrap around events.
I think if that January storm would have performed up to snuff the winter would have felt Ok, but the fact our only real major threat of the winter was full of Ptype and dryslot issues really was a downfall. Last year we had a fairly poor end to the winter, but at least December was good and had a storm that actually, for once, performed or even over performed.
That January storm did sting.
Not so much for the overall totals, but how anomalous the 850 intrusion was for what would normally be a great surface track.- 1

It’s a rain storm. So not really wasted since it was never in the cards. Beautiful day today. Hopefully something pops up after this system.
The timing for the potential Sunday event looks to be off as of right now.
Probably will check back on Friday to see if anything changes. -

Front crossing Allegheny County. Maybe a gusty squall.
My bad, didn't look close at surrounding obs. Front is still in Beaver County.

Had some flurries this morning. Some possible heavier snow showers late this afternoon could give some 1/2 to 1 inch fluffy snow.
After the warmup hoping to get some backend snow after the front on Friday. Doesn't look promising but 12z Canadian hinting at possible but right now it is on it's own.
Looking for anything positive in this calm pattern.
Interested to see if the Canadian was just a fluke, and if not, does the Euro move in anyway.
-
Just keep that 850 low south of us as it strengthens, and the rest we leave to chance.
-
Not the solid shield we would like, but the occasional heavier snow might get the metro a 3-4" total by the time it's all done tonight.

At least the car got washed yesterday.

Too early to call this a bust on icing potential yet???
GEM seems to be leading the way so far.

12 miles from snow 3 hours ago, now 14 miles away. Going the wrong direction here. Nothing like 31.6 and 3 hours of rain.
Yep, I think we have our stalled front location.

Guidance is stubborn with the passing of the 850 0c line.
Definitely need some help upstream somehow.

Wouldn't the front already being through help cool the upper levels at some point? I mean even if it gets stuck just past the county, wouldn't the cold air up above catch up to the front? This is a weird one, so I'm not sure I understand all the dynamics.
With the air being less dense up there, you would think so.
Still much to learn I guess. -
Right now guidance shows the 850 low as more of glorified trough of LP. Shouldn’t take much to flip to frozen near the boundary.
Interesting system. Plus since everything will be gravy, I’m not sweating this storm like MLK. ⛄️- 2

Wow, GFS has an ole fashioned sleet bomb. Lol

The track, strength, and orientation of the 850 low will be interesting to watch.

IMHO our shot was two weeks ago. Usually we don’t get two legit opportunities in one season.
The last thread the needle success was Feb 2012, that was less juiced than this one is looking though.

Seems like there's been an overall progressive shift the last two days.
We'll see if the GFS moves toward the Euro/Nam.
