Snow has always been a source of uplift for peoples' moods during winter. The most depressing thing in winter are short, overcast rainy days that come back to back. That is in fact how winters are in many places where snow isn't common; England, Ireland a lot of the US....snow lifts people's moods because it brightens things up. Using the snow blower and having the dog leap into the air chasing the snow was the most fun I've had in a long time. It's back to overcast and damp today ( though it did snow a bit earlier ).

I actually read something to that effect about Toronto as well, that they were behind Chicago or something in that regard. So again, it's not really a snow mecca. A little more on average than NYC ( 17 inches more ) due more to its being colder with smaller events that are typically rain or mix messes here. Montreal is in its own class for a big city.

I was watching a tv show recently filmed in Toronto, Orphan Black, and seeing the scenes of snow piles in the suburbs i decided to look up their average. It isn't as snowy as some might think; they average around 47 inches ( wrong side of the lake for lake effect ) and then looked up Detroit ( 33 inches ) and Chicago ( 35 inches ) and Boston ( 48 ). So really NYC at 28-30 is fairly snowy. But once you go south it starts dropping a lot. Boston is about on par with Toronto. Montreal however, averages around 83 inches, Quebec City 150...at that point its too cold a place for me; was there in July and stayed in a ski resort that functioned as a hotel in the summer; there was no AC. They told me don't worry open a window at night you'll be fine. They were correct.

The store I bough them from is cleaned out, even though it is in S Jersey and no real accumulation expected there ( but I suspect a lot of people up north, like we did, took the hour drive to pick them up ). If I were enterprising ( which I'm not ) I could get some serious cash selling these off even at a substantial discount ( I paid 299 for one machine that retailed for 1100, and 149 for another that retailed for 950...liquidation sale ). Admittedly, one of them hasn't been able to start ( I suspect old gas, as there is a varnish smell; the story was that floor models come with some gas for testing; we'll see, final sale but warranty still effective; but they gave me the wrong machine, what a screw up; the one I ordered for that price was a smaller single stage; my wife picked them up and even argued with them that it was the wrong one, they insisted the bigger machine was the right one and that the picture on the receipt was wrong! ) Now they said ok well we'll just change the paperwork so you can prove purchase. Didn't even ask for the price difference. No wonder ( big retailer ) is going under....it's like they already took the loss and don't give a crap.

Yes, i wasn't even paying attention. I just bought two snowblowers and they were a steal. Since I ordered them they are flying off the stockroom floor....

As a recently retired mental health professional, I would say that many people need professional help these days, and that is not a put down. More people should take advantage of the help that is out there.

Bear in mind that the last 2 winters or so are the anomaly, as is 96. A normal winter should have some snow events around here, decent ones at that, and when they aren't happening it is odd ( though perhaps to be expected in changing climate patterns ). So, I would say, if you despise snow, there are plenty of places that aren't too hot that also don't snow much; TN, NC, upper GA, even KY and southern IN. I like a good snow, but don't want to move to ME where it snows a lot. And in a winter with such a serious pandemic, I'm not big on a bad winter with a lot snow either. But we can enjoy one after almost 3 years of nothing, right?

And it was a lot less than we were expecting; like all but one storm that year, the bulk of it happened south of our region. We still wound up with 9-12 or so in some places, but overall it set the tone for the rest of the winter.

And yet the seasons and limits for black sea bass get shorter and shorter....when I was a kid it was colder and there were plenty of these around; they would stay inshore til well into November. People were more focused on winter and summer flounder then, so didn't pay much attention to them. The red hake, known locally as ling, was so plentiful we'd shake them off the hook so the captain wouldn't stay on them. I actually do not see much change for either species in that graph. Fishing stocks are so depleted now it is hard to draw firm conclusions, though it makes sense that we should be seeing warm water species more frequently. However, most of them are quite depleted as well. The southern puffer is a fish that has made an appearance in local waters, and unlike the edible blowfish, it's poisonous.

The storms in 14-15 were uniformly lame, as well....

Happens a lot down here. All of the epic storms in 09-10 were meh down here, in the late Feb one. There are many others; Jan 2018, Jan 2015, March 2017, March 2018.

Yep I remember patrolling the parking lot at Sunshine biscuits ( remember them ? ) and . listening to the ominous forecast; snow sleet and freezing rain, and a certain radio blowhard was going on about how that proved there was no global warming...even back then. That storm was vicious despite the lower totals here, as a few inches of frozen crust sat up the 10 inches of snow, making removal extremely difficult.

March 2001 was worse, almost nothing fell. In Jan 2015 we got 4-8. Just a regular snowstorm, not the apocalypse predicted ( and called off here long before the pros )

Not exactly nickel and dimed....there were two mini blizzards in Feb that were great storms, all snow and cold. No mixing IIRC.

Yes but they were smaller and a little more vicious than usual.....lots of ice and severe sleet along with snow and rain. Imagine 4-5 inches of sleet infused with rain, that's how the last storm of 94 in March played out.

Yeah we didn't see the second one down here, but that first one was the biggest I saw in my life at the time, I was 15.....wouldn't see one like that again til 83, and not again til 96. They were rare events.

Feb 2003, Feb,. 2006,Dec 2010, Jan 2011, Jan 2016....more times than the 70's. 80's and 90's combined....so it does happen even in my local snow hole....in addition, we had near misses in Jan 2015 and Feb 2013 and March 2017 and 2018...

Hah! And if my aunt had...well you know the rest.

Got about 6 inches and was lucky to see even that.

One of the great cinematic performances of all time; Scott refused the Oscar. And he never equalled that feat; most embarrassingly appearing in Day of the Dolphin, which was not only ludicrous for its talking dolphins but boring to boot. At the end you are rooting for the bad guys to come kill everyone on the beach so the movie can end.

Got married in Aug 93 and the priest wouldn't put the AC on. Even though someone passed out during an earlier service.

I wasn't in the bullseye for any storm that year, but the 2/6 was insane because 30 mins away they had 18-20, and I was progged to get 8-12. Got 3. Drove the kids to the Camden Aquarium that Sunday, so the kids could see how much snow it got. We had the run of the place, they were open for business. Later that summer I was visited the DC zoo and the Cape May zoo, both had sustained damage from the "snowstorms" ( plural ) that winter; My biggest storm was the Dec 09 one that year at 10 inches.

I don't even keep track of the heat. I don't go outdoors until late August when it starts to break. Seriously, I stay inside. With the AC blasting.
