Yup, one of mine died back to the ground after feb 15. It did send up shoots and I have trained them back into tree form. The darker and more towards red the less cold tolarent they are. They are a souther tree and that’s why they leaf out so late.

The Crepe Myrtles here along the GSB are doing great. There is a red one that is still in full bloom. Didn't notice any damage following February 2015 or the near 0 on Valentine's Day 2016. Some were growing so fast that they were blocking the sidewalk. So the landscapers had to trim them back a bit.

  2. Starting the day with more sun for a change. So it looks like we should make another run on 80 degrees. The WAR is close to record levels near 596 DM for the month of October. What an amazing run this year since the February 588 DM ridge and 80 degree reading. We got really lucky with that strat warming briefly interrupting the record WAR pattern for March and April.

    you can say that again.

How people live in Seattle is beyond me.

This has been a record amount of cloudiness for the early fall in our area. This is typical for Seattle during the winter or Upstate NY in December. I can remember my friends going away to SUNY colleges and all complaining how cloudy it got around December. At least we didn't match the December 2013 cloudfest in BGM.

  4. Warmest average minimum temperature on record for the 1st week of October at Islip. The minimum temperature departure is double the maximum. 2018 also set the record for the latest first low temperature below 50. The previous latest was 10-2-15. We are currently a week later than that with more warmth to continue.

This is one of the more interesting warm patterns we've had in Fall.  Lot of warmth coupled with lots of clouds.  Compare this to 2015, which to my recollection was much sunnier.

Yeah, the minimum departures this fall are running +5 to +10 across the wider region with such high humidity. The maximum departures are a more modest +3 to +6 with all the clouds and onshore flow.

2016 was pretty low too.  This year's is later than any of them though like you said.

This current Arctic temperature spike is now easily the warmest on record for the early part of October. Another example of Arctic amplification going off the rails.

Ah yes I misread. It was just Tuesday's count which is even more impressive.

Impressive year in PA for out of season tornadoes.

    https://weather.com/news/news/2018-02-16-uniontown-pennsylvania-storm-damage

Powerful storms rolled through southwestern Pennsylvania Thursday evening, leaving widespread damage in at least one town from a confirmed tornado.

National Weather Service meteorologists surveyed the damage left behind in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, after a severe storm hit the town at about 6:40 p.m. EST. Debris was widespread in the areas hit hardest, with trees and power lines downed and several homes severely damaged, according to CBS Pittsburgh. A senior living complex lost nearly half its roof, although the storm's path just missed Laurel Highlands High School, according to the NWS.

Following the storm survey, the NWS determined an EF1 tornado was in progress Thursday evening, with maximum winds of 105 mph. It was the first confirmed February tornado in southwestern Pennsylvania since records began in 1950.

  8. Several stations are already in the top 5 highest number of 60 degree minimums with more to come over the next week or so. Notice how many of the top years were in the 2010's.

And only 12.9” fell. I never would’ve suspected that their records would pale in comparison to ours, as cold as it is there. Calgary is about as cold as Daytona Beach is warm, in relation to our climate.

September was actually the snowiest on record for North America. All the cold in the Northern Hemisphere was focused in Canada due to the record blocking near Alaska.
