I have waded South Toe and other mountain streams without waders in early May before. South Toe was frigid even before this cold snap last week, could make for good fishing deep into summer unless it dries out.
I'm shocked the temperature dropped so quickly here even in the foothills. It went from 68 earlier to 45 now with a stiff northwest breeze. Coldest May evening I can remember in ages.
I caught over 20 trout on South Toe yesterday, the water was still a bit high and there were tons of people on the river. Had them for supper too, good eating!
I was on South Toe this morning haha. I have used a 12 foot Field and Stream Eagle Talon from Dicks Sporting goods and it does well on the lakes and would do fine in class 1 and 2 water. Anything more than that would be tricky
This April has generally sucked for Western NC, I have had 3 nights under 30 (more than March already), multiple days with wind gusts over 45 (most windy April I can remember) And over 4 inches of rain (probably be over 6 within a week)
Looks like we are entering a period of below average temperatures for the next few weeks.. very few 70s, mostly 60s and 50s in the mountains. Quite a bit of rain too
Anyone go fishing today? I read that the resource commission wont be stocking as much this year due to covid.. The crowds have been crazy on the creeks since everyone is out of work almost..
