  1. I wouldn't dismiss the chance that tonight could feature the lowest temps of the cold snap in the favored radiating spots. I'm already down to 1F and falling quickly. Depends on how long the clouds stick around after midnight.
  2. Yeah, this winter is earning its cold wings. -10 for the low here
  3. I'm at that part of the winter now where I'm essentially immune to feeling cold, and I love it. 6F feels like room temp with fleece lined jeans and a winter coat... no hint of a chill at all. I know it sounds pretentious, but it's really amazing how quickly one can acclimate if spending a lot of time outdoors.
  4. Are we buying that -17F between hours at MGJ?
  5. Seems -7.4F will do it. Respectable. Not negative teens like 14-15, but that's my third or forth subzero low of the season so far... not the hallmark of an all-time worst winter as this is often claimed
  6. That s/w glides comfortably south. Light snow southern NJ if anywhere.
  7. Delayed but not denied. Village of Millbrook. Used to spend hours walking around town after school, thinking we were cool because we knew all the secret shortcuts and such. It kind of spoils the illusion when you get a couple hundred feet up and see that it's basically two blocks of buildings in the middle of the forest.
  8. This was/is probably the most photogenic snowfall I've ever seen in my hood. I've never seen such total stickage to every last branch and reed... the only thing I can compare it to is heavy hoar frost on an ADK summit. Beautiful doesn't even begin to describe it. Very localized though in that respect, as noted above. My plan for this morning was to shoot Minnewaska, but after getting out past NP I saw it was complete powder that had already fallen off the trees. Luckily I left early enough that I was still able to make it back to the trails near me in time for sunrise.
  9. Yeah, potent little thing. Makes me more all the more hungry for a clean 12+ event. 4.7" does it here, off to clear and revel
  10. Well this sure wrapped up faster than I figured. I guess 4-5 hours was all we were ever getting.
  11. Heaviest rates of the whole winter for me...
  12. Hah, I just crossed the 2" mark so I'm not running any victory laps yet. Just impressive rates for the time being... how long it lasts remains to be seen. I see a spotter reported 8" over by West Kill already, nice storm in the Catskills.
  13. I'm not far from legitimate puking snow territory at the moment. Really coming down nicely.
  14. There's been a nice trend on the HRRR of prolonging the duration of the snow. The back edge doesn't clear the river until after midnight now. It probably goes without saying, but we definitely want to see the LP wave develop more quickly as it rides the front. On some of the runs that show a more pronounced circulation over LI or CT, you can see the inflection point taking shape close to NYC such that precip north of there has a pivoting component to its movement. Not quite a conveyor belt structure, but the first signs of an emerging cloud head. On the whole, this has the potential to be a nice little event.
  15. This is the start of our comeback tour. I can feel it.
  16. Most of the mesos have the freezing line surging north of me around 0z tonight. I would agree with hedging toward mostly or all snow, albeit a wet snow (which is nice in its own right).
  17. Yeah, exactly... it has to be included in one season or another. I don't have a problem with folks doing as they please with their personal snowfall records. For me though, mid-November is pretty clearly within the sensible realm of winter. Christmas music would have been on the radio for weeks already.
  18. Ditto on creeks. Coverage on ponds and lakes didn't take much of a hit, although there are all sorts of pools of water and slush on top of the original ice. The pre-snow layer is still more than thick enough for ice fishing, you just end up breaking through the new surface and getting your feet wet the whole way out. I'm sure there's a more technical name for it or a better way to describe it...
  19. We ice jam, apparently https://www.facebook.com/NewPaltzFireDepartment/posts/1193136700850373
  20. At least IMBY, once you punched through the top 1/2" of crust, the snow underneath was rather powdery still. It would have been nice to keep it around as a base for the next one though
  21. I forgot to return my Stratus after bringing it inside to melt after the snowstorm, and a pine needle jammed the tipper on the Ambient so we'll never know
