January 30th- Feb 1st ULL and coastal storm obs
gtg947h replied to JoshM's topic in Southeastern States
Nothing but flurries on and off all day in Fayette county GA. Nothing stuck. -
I get it, everyone's pumped over snow potential. But dangit, I'm sick of the darned cold and really would like some warmer weather for outdoor activities and to give our poor HVAC a break...

Southern Crippler - Get well soon Jimbo Storm Obs
gtg947h replied to BooneWX's topic in Southeastern States
We're more hoping for NOT something... cold rain would be far better than ice. So far I'm not seeing ice anywhere outside but there are still a few hours to go... -
I'm wavering on going out and getting a generator this evening. We just bought a house in Fayetteville (GA not NC) a couple weeks ago and I'd planned to eventually get a transfer switch setup installed over the summer (and maybe even a tri-fuel generator to run off natural gas). Wasn't planning on staring down the barrel of an ice storm this quickly. Need to go ahead and get the grill hooked up so at least we could cook something if needed. Part of me hopes that living near a hospital and a data center means our power would be back on pretty quickly but that's wishing... got spoiled by our old house outside Savannah; even during hurricanes and the 2025 snowsleetice storm we somehow never lost power. Nevertheless I'm pulling for this thing to just keep moving north (sorry NC folks). Give me rain if I can't have either snow or sunny and warm.

I dunno, if we got the (surely overdone?) 2+ inches of ice on some of these models, I think I'd rather take the cold rain, especially if it misses us and ices out my employer further north...

The 2018 snows in Savannah and Atlanta bookended the trip for my wife's first brain surgery at Emory that year...

We're closing on a house just south of Atlanta Jan 2nd... I don't need that

Gimme! I have the week after Christmas off and hope to do some flying and biking, and then we're moving to a new house in early January. Warm and sunny would be appreciated; I see little enough daylight (esp. on work days) as it is. Snow later in Jan is fine...

Saw a few flakes blowing about while coming home on I-285 today... naturally they melted on contact with anything, but still...

That was us yesterday. Hours of thunder through the afternoon and evening but not a drop of rain. Two days ago we got a very brief (~30 sec or so) light shower but I couldn't tell where it was coming from. All of us at the neighborhood pool were looking around like "where's the cloud?" and laughing about it. All I can figure was the winds were blowing it around pretty good on the way down...

And/or a career field with limited relocation options. Yeah, it's my own fault (should have been a civil engineer like Mom suggested), but I'm quite envious of those who can move to just about any small city or metro area and have multiple employment options. I've been looking for jobs around Atlanta for a year with no success...

Sigh. I could really use a few days in a row with good clear skies and light wind, especially in the morning.

Ran across this one on a different board and just had to share so we could all bask in the retro glory... https://weatherstar.netbymatt.com/ And if that's not retro enough for you... https://weatherstar3000.netbymatt.com/

Yeah we saw that one slide just south of us. Got some good thunder out of it though. And yes, the past couple weeks have been very summer-like, if a little cooler than actual summer.
-
Hopefully nice, boring, warm weather...

Just dug around to find such a thread, if anyone's curious... I have a lot of family right near FFC, watching this weekend's one closely...

Another St. Patrick's Day weekend storm... I remember 2008, that was "interesting" down here...
-
I'm outside before dawn every morning, and spend most of my weekend free time outdoors too. I'm sick of cold in the mornings and tired of trying to work on stuff with cold numb hands. And it seems like it's been an especially cold winter this year... When I built my shop in 2015, I was outside almost all weekend for hours, even in the worst of the summer heat. As long as I have sunscreen, water, and a shower at the end of the day I'm much happier when it's warm.

If it's still looking like that when we're up there next week it's going to be a tough go/stay decision. I'm already annoyed that I probably won't be able to do much flying (if any) up there (and I really need to get current), and I don't want to be dealing with snow again... but I don't think I'd have the heart to take my son away from snow and his cousins. I'm hoping the first week of April is nice and warm...

Ffuuuuuuuuu..... We were planning to be in the Atlanta area for the week of my son's break from school and we were really counting on some good (dry/sunny) weather for outdoor activities. Not going to be happy if it's just days of rain...

I know we're done for a few years down here. I'd say I'm looking forward to 70 on Wednesday but I'll be stuck in a windowless office all day
-
Still plenty of white stuff on the ground here, especially in shades and lightly trafficked areas. Neighborhood roads seem mostly clear and we're going to venture out in the old car today. All the neighborhood kids have been outside all day long and coming in exhausted every evening. I shoveled snow for the first time in my life. Unfortunately I think the capacitor in our heat pump went out Wednesday night (of course, during the coldest nights of the year, just like when the AC died in the middle of summer years ago). We'll see if the local appliance part place has one today...

Gotta sleep sometime... at least till the eight year old comes bounding down the stairs dressed and ready to go at 0445 It's mostly sleet here (on top of ice) so we'll see how long it sticks around...

Sleet has started west of Savannah

Ok, sorry for the dumb question... can someone please explain what suppression is in this context? I'm generally pretty good at picking up the general meaning from context but this one eludes me somehow... (I don't have meteorology training; I'm just an engineer with a VFR pilot's understanding of weather)
