Ok, sorry for the dumb question... can someone please explain what suppression is in this context? I'm generally pretty good at picking up the general meaning from context but this one eludes me somehow... (I don't have meteorology training; I'm just an engineer with a VFR pilot's understanding of weather)

Yeah disaster would be an understatement on that. I'd welcome a good "snow day" break from work (and laugh darkly at upper management's pleading to work from home if we have power) but that's no bueno. We somehow kept power through the whole hurricane late last year, but I have a feeling an ice storm may hit us worse and be more damaging/have worse people impact (since so many people are dependent on heat pumps/resistive heat vs. gas or oil furnaces)...

I know, two weeks out... but as this'll hopefully be our last winter in Savannah, that would be a great way to finish...
-
I'm not really a cold fan but appreciate the novelty of snow. But of course that's right in the middle of our trip to Atlanta. It needs to wait a day or two, or shift a little west...
-
Yeah it's dry enough already, don't need it drier... not complaining about the warmth though, except that I'm stuck indoors at work and can't enjoy it
-
Things suddenly got chilly here... saw 48 on the thermometer this morning. Later this week looks even colder Sure feels like fall now, but I wish it had been a more gradual transition. Unlike most of the board though, I'm not a winter fan. I just see this as a harbinger of being cold and miserable at my morning workouts...

We're off to the east so the worst winds and rain aren't as big a concern here (though we just hit 2.50 at the house), but what effect would a slower and/or weaker storm have on the coastal tornado threat this evening? Anything noticeable? The impact to my parents and in laws (both real close to KFFC) is obviously quite affected by track, too...
-
I realize the setup is much different but I'm still remided of Alberto in 1994, which basically sat right over our house for a couple days and dumped a ton of rain...
-
5.19 inches so far here in Pooler, and two tornado warnings Back yard is flooding, starting to get nervous about my shop (it's a little lower than the house)...
-
Wind was blowing out this way too... picked up .68 in about 30 min. Then it blew out, and left us with a pleasant evening at the neighborhood pool...
-
I was in town for a big chunk of that... spent the worst of it parked in front of Homegoods on Abercorn by the mall; crazy lightning and the parking lot started flooding (so I decided it was time to relocate). It's funny, tonight was the first night of my son's VBS and we got that storm, and last year on the first nigh of it we drove home on I-16 through something just as crazy. Still managed to get .55 at the house today, even though all the action was further east...

We've had some impressive thunder tonight, though both yesterday and today we somehow skirted right between the heaviest storms.

2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season
gtg947h replied to Stormchaserchuck1's topic in Tropical Headquarters
<Sigh> Why does this sort of thing always happen right after I leave on vacation? When we went to Ireland in 2017 we got there, took a nap, and then I saw Irma forecast to hit Savannah as a major... didn't stay that way as we all know, but it sure made the first day or two of our trip rather interesting as I was trying to coordinate with neighbors to take care of our cat. I don't expect to see a major barreling in this time but stil... (and yes it's been that long since we've gone on an actual vacation...) -
We stole all your rain... our gauge said 4.36 when it was all said and done. And the back yard is flooded...
-
Yep, distinctly remember that one (though my son doesn't; he was 22mo). The next day we drove to Atlanta for wife's first brain surgery and observation... and it proceeded to snow again (up there) the night before we came home! I think we used up our quota for the decade...
-
I'm trying to remember Hermine... I think we got tornado warnings for that one too, but overnight. I can't recall how strong it seemed but I do vaguely remember it just being longer with more rain and wind. The buildup to Idalia definitely seemed more dire--after all we expected a full Cat 1 to pass right over my house (the track kept jumping to either side of us). At least out here it was almost a non-event--just a couple trash cans and basketball goals tipped over and some small twigs and pine needles on the ground. Our power never even flickered. But yeah, very interesting observations!

Downgraded to a tropical storm now (1700 EDT advisory)
-
Let's hope that trend continues....
-
Tornado warning southwest of Savannah, and I'm right on the edge...
-
I deove through the last wave heading west from downtown Savannah last night. Really heavy rain and some intense lightning for a bit. And too many people driving with hazard lights on... A friend took this picture of the tornado-warned storm in Effingham.
-
Dang, we got hail again! Just pea sized this time but still... Three times in less than two months. We almost never get hail here. And it's still raining, and our backyard is flooded...
-
Got a little bit of ~3/8" hail last night... it's a little weird getting hail twice in a couple months, since we rarely see it at all.
-
Yeah, yesterday and the night before had a winter feel to them, and given time of year and recent warmer weather they even felt a little colder. It was remarkable, but honestly kinda miserable especially for the first week of summer vacation...
-
We had a pretty good storm today with 1/4in hail (and apparently bigger at my son's school--he came home saying "it was raining ice cubes!" ) But just to the south/southwest they got some nasty hail, and I haven't seen that much purple and white on a radar in a long time, if ever. It got worse after this picture...
