  1. My lawns and gardens have enjoyed the 1.5" of rain the past week or so. Look good. Really no fair to compare to Lava because I hired a lawn care company that has a fertilizing program. Once a month they come, each month with different applications. I also have a tree service that applies deep root fertizler once a season for my Red Maple, Horse chestnut and Ash which is in this picture
  2. Jeez Lava you have put so much energy into your lawn. I am no lawn expert. A couple of ideas. Make sure you keep mowing so the crabgrass doesn't reseed. About this time of year it grows those tall shoots with the triangles that have the seed. Make sure more seeds don't fall down to make next season even worse. Then maybe just let it be. Green is green. We bought 15 acres of forest up our road about 12 years ago. Clear cut a portion for views. I never seeded or did anything. Just mow it once a month or so. It now has a pretty nice lawn. Not perfect grass but mowed it looks fine to me. Maybe your lawn would look the same? Looks like it faces south to get mid day sun? Here's a pic of the lawn up the road.
  3. At the red light in Bristol NH today I happen to notice the hill and snapped this picture. No color correction here but the first trees are showing some lightning of their deep summer green. Guess they know that daylight and sun angle is decreasing.
  4. Congrats Alex 43.3F Nice and toasty on the hill, low 54.1F
  5. We own a 15 acre parcel looking over Newfound Lake. I don't do anything to the grass, just mow once a month. With frequent rains this summer it looks darn good. Anyone want to picnic or camp on it? Free to any AMWX members! Private night under the stars for sure!
  6. Lava, that doesn't look good. I dethatch once a year, each spring but that doesn't look like much thatch in my opinion. Have you fertilized at all? I know it's not great for the environment but starting last year I hired a company that does lawn care. He comes once a month and applies fertilizer. They have a program so each month the application varies. In the spring weed control mixed in, then grub control yada yada. My lawn looks great but I bet if I didn't have him it would look like crap.
  7. Thursday's flash flooding on the NW side of Newfound Lake has caused a lot of debris and silt to move into the lake by the Cockermouth River. Drone shot shows it clearly
  8. Nice Alex. At least you don't have to invest in AC at the Moose Lodge and Cabins!
  9. Slight Risk for tomorrow. Probably there will be more people out on the lakes and hiking the mountains of NNE than any other day of the year. Not a good combination
  10. At 330pm today June 26 hit 80F. First time in 2019 Nice .85" drink for the gardens yesterday
  11. This question is mostly for Tamarack. When does White Pine pollen peak? I would think it should have been everything is running so late. Everything coated here. I have been mostly able to keep all the windows closed this whole month with temps each day in the 60's to mid 70's. House guests this week and warmer temperatures mean I want to open windows wide. Is peak about over? Assume it has a ways to go in extreme northern areas.
  12. My fields have so many wild flowers right now. They seem to have exploded the past week. It gets really hard to cut when it gets really high and I love the look of nice cut low fields but I know how important the flowers are to the bees/insects/butterflies. Bottom line I'll wait to mow and leave patches for the wildlife.
  13. Alex, everything is so late, still waiting for my first 80F. I guess the Lupine Festival is a bit like the Cherry Blossoms in DC. Each year is different, this is certainly a late one!
  14. Wasn't sure if the rain would make it up to me today. It shifted north enough to just included me in steady light rain. Cool, low 60's, light rainy day. Not great for 1000's of motorcycle's heading back south from CNH Lakes Region.
  15. Last year we started some Lupine by seed. Started the plants indoors and mid-summer they were big enough to put along the stone wall right across the road from our house. They came back up this year. Gave them some Miracle Grow earlier this spring and they have taken off. Not quite at peak but getting close.
  16. A weather friend sent me this on today's date. "1842 - A late season snowstorm struck New England. Snow fell during the morning and early afternoon, accumulating to a depth of ten to twelve inches at Irasburg VT. Berlin NH was blanketed with eleven inches of snow during the day. Snow whitened the higher peaks of the Appalachians as far south as Maryland."
  17. Alex, just sent you an email but I would bet these are the famous NNE black flies. Much smaller than house flies, really look like gnats. Swarm to the point you can't go outside. In your eyes, up your nose, swallowing them. I always heard Mother's Day to Father's Day is blackfly season in NH. The black fly season is over in S NH and is now ending in my area of Central NH but your cold spot is even further behind. Wear the screen headgear or shirts, we have to for a week or so until they pass. There awful things and bite like crazy
  18. My type of perfect day. 47F for a low and 77F for a high with dews in the 40's. Not a cloud in the sky. Looks like a good soak tomorrow night to keep everything real green.
  19. Another very cool day. Snow or rime coating atop the rock pile.
  20. This cool, wet season is really making my lawn green......okay I'll be honest. I hired a company this year to fertilize. They came earlier this spring and applied the fertilizer with weed killer. My lawn looks fantastic but I know it's not good for the environment. I asked if they can use an organic product and they said yes. So going forward this season this is what they will use. Apple trees are peaking with blossoms this year. It's a great year for the blossoms. Some years I don't have many blossoms and some years I do. So lots of apples for the deer. Last summer was very dry as I missed almost every thunderstorm. Wonder if they were stressed and that helped this season? Don't trees/flowers produce more fruit after a stressful time. Will have to Google that... Pictures of the front lawn and a few of the apple trees.
  21. I remember that. The oak leaves even got it. Meanwhile 2pm. 30F Moderate snow Mt Washington 43.5F here moderate rain
  22. You think of our forefathers who planted and lived in NNE. Colder climate. No weather forecasts or plastic to cover crops. A kill in July can mean the difference between starving the next winter and having a bounty. I was talking to my Mom in Bend Oregon the other day. They had a early spring and all the apple trees even Rhodos bloomed. Then the past week a hard freeze and everything dead.
  23. Ouch. What a cold day coming up tomorrow with a nice soak too! Upper 30's to low 40's late afternoon?
