Central PA - Winter 2021/2022
CarlislePaWx replied to Bubbler86's topic in Upstate New York/Pennsylvania
Remember a little earlier with the MU post. They had a fairly large area of 3-6". That 6" wasn't being projected by anyone at that time. BTW, currently my temp is down to 26.8 degrees after a high of 36.1 (in the shade). I have about another 4 weeks of increasing sun elevation to go before my station goes into direct sun for any length of time. With each passing day my station will receive more sun. By the equinox it has at least enough sunlight during early to mid afternoon that I can trust my high temps again (until next November). -

Wow. 5 to 5.5" for me. Right now CTP has me at 2 -3 inches. Don't know if I'll ever make it to a warning but I'm willing to bet the current upper end of 3" goes to 4". I must say the whole layout of the precip field just looks weird. -

This isn't the first time I've been one county away for an advisory. I'm not going to quibble over 2-4 20 miles south of me and 1-3 up here. I'm hoping for 2" with anything more a bonus. -

You guys are slow! I told you it was a miller A 12 hours ago...lol. -

You're off by 20 miles. The screw hole is directly over me. How weird. I know it will change in six hours but that is just plain trolling by GooFuss. -

I was writing the below before several of you were already describing things the way I have below...so I'm just adding my two cents... Is this really a Miller B? the low starts out down in central Alabama and moves northeast to northwestern Georgia, to north central South Carolina, to just off the southern Virginia coast, and then the jump happens up to southeast of NYC. But, the jump doesn't happen until the low is practically at the coast. A "jump" is more of a low pressure well inland, coming northeast over the Appalachians heading up towards southwest PA with the jump taking place there to the coast as a new low pressure center, and then redeveloping / strengthening moving northeast from there. In our case while there appears to be a "jump", the low is already at the coast before the jump. It almost has more of a Miller A'ish look to it, but regardless, the MA appears to receive the jackpot once again. -

No problem, I was just ribbing you a tad since I rarely do that stuff around here. @sauss06can clarify but I’m pretty sure he still lives in Summerdale. I’ve always thought the Fire Department he works with was in Harrisburg, but that I’m definitely not certain. -

Central Cumberland? Summerdale? Last time I looked Summerdale was along the Susquehanna river. (j/k) Carlisle is the most central significant town in central Cumberland. Now that I have that settled, I can report that in the shade my high temp yesterday was 61.3 degrees F. Had my station been in the sun I would have easily been 63 and possibly 64. So I can mostly confirm your suspicion. -

Yesterday afternoon as I was taking down my Christmas lights I looked down at my lawn and saw a bright yellow dandelion bloom. Ugggghhh -

This map lines up pretty well with CTP's snow map (for our area) unless they've updated it. -

Even though I don't want to, I think I'm going to take down my outside Christmas lights. Doing it with temp of 60 degrees is too hard to pass up. -

Thanks, Mag. Appreciate the clarification! If the cold push stays on track for what comes after 1/7, it looks like we might have our first sub-freezing high temp of the season. -

I know the focus has shifted back to tomorrow night and Monday, but what happened to the 1/7 storm? Totally out to sea south of us. I thought the GFS was consistently looking good for the LSV later in the week. BTW...so far today I have recorded 0.77" of rain to start off 2022. Looks like there will be another accumulating round over the next few hours. Last night's runs gave me an average of 1.2" of rainfall. I was thinking a little earlier that the rainfall was a complete bust yet again, but it's looking like a decent shot at reaching 1" by the time it ends tomorrow. -

I can answer that question for you. @Voyagerhas the Ambient Weather WS-2000. I whole-heartedly endorse Ambient's products. I've had the WS-2902 model for 3 years and it has worked flawlessly. Ambient has revised the firmware in the 2902 4 times since introduction, so current model is WS-2902C. Retails for $169.99, but occasionally goes on sale for 15% off. The 2902 and the 2000 both use the exact same outdoor sensor assembly. The only difference is the type of display they use for the 2 models. The WS-2000 uses a pure LED display with a wide viewing angle. The 2902 uses a TFT film display, which works great but you have to adjust your viewing angle to have it display completely and brightly. I have mine placed right next to my La-Z-Boy on a table whose height is about the same as my head position in my chair. The display comes with a support base that intentionally angles the display top-forward. You just need to experiment a little. As for Voyager's comment about battery backup, the 2902 does come with that which means that during any power outage, the display goes off but the unit continues to operate normally. The other thing that happens with no power is the unit stops transmitting over your wifi until power is resumed. I don't know off the top of my head what the WS-2000 costs but I'm pretty sure it's in the high 200's (not on sale). PM me if you want any additional info. -

Hi All. Wishing everyone a safe, happy, and healthy New Year. Each NYE I think about the weather extremes I've experienced on this day/night. Tonight, with a current temp of 50 degrees is certainly in the upper range of temps going into midnight. I'm sure there have been higher readings well into the 50's but I can't remember them now. At the other end of the scale are definitely some frigid evenings with temps in the teens down to 10 above. One year in the past 10 had that frigid temp in Times Square at midnight. For those other numbers persons out there I thought I would share a few statistics from my station. This month which is about to end is the driest month in years and could possibly go back to 1989 that had such a frigid December that it was incredibly dry with only 0.63" of liquid for the month. December 2021 is going out with an incredibly dry 1.06" which includes the 0.40" of melted snow from earlier in the week when I measured 1.9" of snow. Last month, November, was the second driest month of this year with just 1.88". My annual precipitation total ends with 42.25" which is pretty close to the average. Despite the final two months of this year having less than 2" for the month, I recorded 4" or more for 4 months out of the 12 which were February, July, August, and September. We all know how wet September was. I recorded 9.31" that month. So 2021 has seen some pretty wild swings in monthly precip totals. I wonder how wild things will be in 2022? I'll throw one last statistic in to this report which were my lowest and highest temps for the year. The lowest was 12.6 degrees (no single digit lows) and the highest was 98.1. -

Thanks you for this info. It is nice to have supporting obs! Your ratio is crazy...yet makes sense. I had 99.9% snow for the event yesterday. Just a very little bit of sleet just before it stopped completely. Temp was 31.1 an hour ago with a fair amount of fog, but not as dense as you reported. It's lifting now and the temp is up to 32.7. -

@Cashtown_Coop, or @MAG5035, or to anyone else who melts down their snowfall to obtain a liquid equivalent: I just went outside and brought in my clear-vue gauge to melt down today's 1.9" of snowfall. I was pretty surprised at what I saw. I received 0.40" of liquid from 1.9" of snow which equates to a ratio of just 4.75 : 1 !! Typically you only see these low ratios with a lot of sleet. I know my snow this morning was wet but I didn't think it was THAT wet. I am very anxious to see what others near my area got for their liquid equivalent and ratio. Thanks in advance. PS>>>My temp is now down to 32.2 degrees. Oh so tantalizingly close for a bit of freezing rain. -

You're welcome! Snow storm obs are what bring me out with the majority of my posting. At 9:56pm I've just had a moderate rain shower. The temp has dropped from 33.1 to 32.4. It's not likely to go below 32.0. We do need the precip, but I would love to hold on to my snowcover a bit longer. Most will be gone by later tomorrow. -

Well, surprisingly, that last burst lasted long enough to add an additional 0.3" to my total. So my event total is 1.9". Snow has just stopped completely here. Temp 32.9. -
