  1. I really didn't expect that glacier to disappear so quickly. I watched it happen and I still can't quite believe it. I'm so glad my basement stayed dry, I guess the ground stayed frozen enough. I'm afraid that when it does thaw things are going to get messy though. At least it's back below freezing now.

That’s one of the few parts of the country to set an all-time state low temperature in the last 10 years. I can’t even imagine what -50 feels like.

50 below is cold, really freaking cold, REALLY cold. I've seen temps in the 40's below a bunch of times and the coldest I've been in is 57 below. It hurts to think at those temps.

The only winter sport I'm interested in is ice fishing, which is quite good up there. But I could live without it. My BIL is closer to Lewiston and Augusta so he is not in the wilderness, it's more populated and not too far from the coast. Further up in ME is actually frank wilderness. You get lost there, someone might find your bones in the spring. Maybe. It is a long drive, I've done it many times, but then I stop a lot, gotta get the cheap vodka at the NH border for my BIL. Usually stop at the Bass Pro and also LL Bean.

Try stopping at the Kittery Outpost next time instead of BP or Bean. It's a really cool store. It's also a few minutes from some of the best mt biking in the entire area, Aggy or Mt A (Mt Agamenticus) an old ski area with miles and miles of top notch primitive singletrack riding and hiking that will leave you thoroughly satisfied with the time spent there.

As has been pointed out by others, not everyone had 4 feet of snow in March last year. I believe I had two events that actually produced snow, one was 4 inches when areas to the north had double digits, and the other was 10-11 inches. So around 14 for the month, not bad, but far from epic. We had a 3-5 event in April. In any case, lots of snow and big storms just aren't typical of March in the immediate metro. Checking in daily, still see nothing happening.

Animal did and he is who I was responding to.

I think it would take an incredible amount of bad luck to make it through feb without at least one advisory level event for the coast. I would put the chances of that happening at less then 10%.

This winter has really really gotten me down. First I break my collar bone on solid ice (created by the awul pattern). And then I’m being crushed  financially with a lack of snow removal money. So if anyone really has a reason to be down on this winter it’s me.

My heart attack and subsequent complications are pretty high on the list too.

  5. In their morning discussion OKX doesn't seem to be too concerned with the icing potential later today and this evening. It seems to me that with the whole area being a solid block of ice and the streets, sidewalks and everything else being frozen several inches down any liquid that falls has the potential to freeze especially with ALL of the drainages and storm drains filled with ice and ice banks right up to the edge of the traffic lanes keeping whatever falls in the traffic lanes. I foresee a difficult time ahead.

Yea, it’s needed. With a toddler and the wife 8 months cooking, any falls are problematic. Give me 6 foot snow banks with a clear walkway/driveway over this nuisance stuff if I had a choice.

I assume your area is similar to what I've got here a few miles west of Danbury. We got 4" of snow then filled that up with ~2" of freezing rain bringing it down to about 2" of pack then it glacierized (good word eh) and walking is a challenge. I had a heart attack 3 1/2 weeks ago then some ugly complications requiring surgery so my leg is f'd up which has messed with my balance and confidence walking on anything that isn't smooth. Just going out to the car is sketchy and not much fun.

  7. I saw 2 on a couple of local stations and 4 on the others. It was plenty cold :yikes:  It's not like I'm looking forward to a drenching rainstorm but it will be nice to get ride of some of this ice. I have a feeling it's going to be kind of a disaster though as there's no place for the new water to go with everything frozen solid.

retired March 31, 2018.  Still trying to remain relevant and pass on info.

Congrats on getting out in one piece ;) Aren't you glad you moved down south where it's so much warmer :) You, my friend, will always maintain your relevancy as you share the wealth of knowledge stored away inside. It's a pleasure to have you with us here in this forum.

  9. -2 low, a couple of local stations hit -4. Thankfully the wind never really got going here but it was enough to creat some scary ice falls and bring down more branches. When I'd open the door it sounded like a bull in a china shop as everything was shattering and snapping. My yard looks like a war zone with 2 trees down and broken branches and pieces everywhere.

  10. Down to 18* now, wind is light out of the NNW and it sounds scary outside. I lost a 60 foot tree in the yard this afternoon because a 30 foot long section of a neighbors tree landed on it and split it down the middle. As they came down they damaged other trees that are now really scary, half of one is leaning towards the house and the other half will probably end up totally tangled in the one that's already down across the yard. I'm hoping that doesn't take out an 80 footer that's about 30 feet from my kids bedroom. It's going to be a long night...

    Fines?

Also wood stove is cranking. Down to 23 from a 12:30 pm high of 37.

Yeah if they can track the runoff back to a particular property the DEP can fine you for using the wrong herbicides and pesticides. I solved the problem by ignoring things like that and fertilizing a long time ago. I mean really, who wants a lawn that grows faster and thicker anyway. Not me ;) I haven't heard of people getting hassled by them for using the wrong type of ice melt but it's on the books so I try to avoid using certain things just so we don't have a problem.

How’s the recovery going, how are you feeling?

I'm feeling pretty good all things considered. I'm getting tired of just sitting around 'waiting' to get better. The docs, the wife, pretty much everyone I know keeps saying 'relax, it'll be ok, you'll get better...' I need to do something other than walk around the supermarket where it's flat and warm, I'm fkn bored out of my mind. I have the patience of a NYer and it's not serving me well ;)
