A friendly reminder to get the layer of ice off your car roof. I saw three cars with smashed windshields between here and Route 62 on 128 S.

Then I was hit by a sheet of ice from an SUV merging on the highway. Smashed onto my front end and hood, but luckily no damage I can see.

    Don’t be that idiot. Thanks.

The ice flying off the 18 wheelers is the worst, I remember reading about someone that got killed because the ice flew off the truck and into a car.

44 years since 78.   Great story Steve.    We all have disappointments in life and living in California and therefore missing  78 is among my biggest to take to the grave with me.

That was the first year my father hired someone to plow the driveway because it was pretty big and he was getting tired of shoveling. The plow guy told my father to shovel out out cars (we had 3) then he would come and plow. By the time me and my father shoveled out the cars the driveway was just about cleaned so he ended the relationship with that plow guy. I think it took me and my father 4 hours Tues night shoveling that snow, we had snow banks that would make Kevin envious.

Sorry to hear all the heat issues.  We have oil and a  wood burning stoves.  I go 50/50 depending on how lazy I am.  The wood burning stove keeps the house comfortable on days above 20F.  We don't have a house generator but a portable Honda generator that runs fridge, space heater and lights but not the well.  We can always melt snow for water needs.  So we are all set for prolonged ice storm situations.  That is the only thing I really dread in winter.

-3F last night  Only 32" of snow so far this winter.  Looking forward to see what the 12Z GFS looks like for this possible wet snow coming up.

How big is your generator? I got a 8500 watt so I could run the well and whatever else I need, 8500 is plenty to keep everything I need going. I know the well sucks a lot of power that's why I went bigger.

Was a lack luster Winter thus far here. Not sure we see any major shifts towards a change to more a more Snowy winter. Although there were many places right on the coast that saw record snows.

I would look to next year at this point for a good winter ( but I wouldn't rule out a few surprises though ).

If we can get one blockbuster blizzard that'll save this winter for me. I'm talking 18-24+ incher. We've had the cold and I've had a small pack for awhile but if we're not going to get several small/medium storms I'll hope for one more biggie.

The irony is we were going to put in an electric heat pump for A/C and heat last August/September but deferred until the spring.  I wanted it primarily for better AC than what we have now and it’s much more efficient.

Had we gone ahead with that project we’d be fine.  It wouldn’t have been hot like a stove but serviceable heat. I just balked as I wanted it for better AC than what we have now and given it was later in summer, temps on downhill slide, I figured we’d do it in April/May before the warm season.  Oops.

My sister in Maine had the mini splits put in two years ago mainly for the AC, her main furnace broke down last year and the mini splits heated the house just fine. They're a good investment.

Breaking out the entombed cars has been fun.

I'm lucky I have a big garage but I've seen cars around that are coated in ice, they looked like they were dipped in glaze, must have been a fun time getting the doors open.

Woke up early this morning and it felt cold inside... huh.  Checked thermostats, set-temps all at 65F and all zones reading the same 60F.  Uh oh.  That's a sinking feeling when temps are in the single digits outside.  Not sure what's up, went downstairs and seems the boiler is not igniting... the fan runs, the thermostat zone relays all are asking for heat (it's baseboard hot water) but boiler (propane) doesn't want to ignite.  A bit harder on a Saturday but emergency service should be here any minute, about 6 hours after I discovered the issue.

Meanwhile my perpetual optimism has me thankful this issue has allowed me to have my first Saturday off from work since November, ha.  This is so nice, getting some stuff done on an extra day off around home while it's 52F inside now.  The funny thing is even at temps of like 10F the floor to ceiling south facing windows have managed to recover the temperature up a couple degrees in the past 90 minutes.

Is it fixed? You need a wood or pellet stove just in case.

About 3" of sleet with a dusting of snow on top. It's impossible to move; blew out the drive belt on my snow-blower. What a mess.

Im kind of glad I didn't get a lot of sleet, it's a PITA to move. Just got a coating with a little light snow on top, still slippery as hell though.
