  1. Surprised how icy the secondary roads are here in the Valley.
  2. Looks like about an inch of snow here in the Valley. Wind howled all night long and at one point around 11:30 PM it was blizzard like conditions.
  3. Moderate snow in Maggie. Heavy enough to cover the decks.
  4. These strong storm systems are carving out a path for huge chunk of the coldest air since a year ago December to enter our Region. There is a one two punch arriving Monday and next Tuesday. That storm on Monday hasn't resolved in model world and this batch of cold has staying power in my opinion.
  5. GSP seems a bit bullish on the unusual flow snow starting early this evening for the SW and W facing mountains, particularly the Smokies. It is looking like a potential 10 to 14 hour flow snow event as winds behind the front slowly veer from the SW to W before finally favoring the typical NWFS locations. Winter Weather Advisory appears to be likely later this afternoon.
  6. Not much of a wind issue in the Valley so far, but it has been pouring rain all night. I'm sure Jonathan Creek is running high. 44 and moderate rain at this time.
  7. The storm system on Tuesday almost broke a record for a Bering Sea low last week. It looks extremely dynamic with a lot of wind energy. Perhaps this is the storm that begins the changes in pattern that we've been watching. Hopefully we don't wash away in the meantime!
  8. It's been spitting flurries all day here the house. That westerly wind component really helped this go around.
  9. Light snow in Maggie this morning. It started about 7:30. Just drove up to Soco Gap and the ground was covered and NCDOT was salting and plowing US 19 heading to Cherokee.
  10. I was attending Mars Hill College during those winters. Memories I will never forget actually living in WNC!
  11. Emptied 1.74 out of the rain gage. That is certainly more than was expected for this event.
  12. Nothing but rain and 40 all night and this morning in the Valley.
  13. I had a high of 47 today. Down to 40 now with heavier clouds moving in. Not expecting anything here overnight but rain. Good luck everyone in the Ice Storm!
  14. One of the best and most unique microclimates in the country, I believe.
  15. Up to 21 now. There was a bit of an inversion overnight. Cataloochee had a low of 25 this morning.
  16. 17 this morning in the Valley. My 3rd coldest morning of the Winter season so far. It has me thinking. That's some mighty chilly air to start the day and cirrus clouds are expected by noon limiting any daytime heating. It never got above 35 here yesterday with clear skies and light N winds. Maybe a surprise or two this evening into early tomorrow morning? I guess we will see!
  17. I joined Eastern WX back in 2007. Been here ever since with a couple of name changes.
  18. Larry C had a nice update today talking about the cold rolling East of the Rockies into our Region beyond mid month. I agree that our Winter is back loaded and we certainly could be in for a wild ride well into February.
  19. Another chilly day in the Valley. My high for the day was 35 around 2 PM. Temperature has dropped back to freezing now and with ideal radiational cooling overnight, we likely will fall toward 20 by daybreak.
  20. GFS says what Winter Storm? Much weaker and a lot less QPF.
