E PA/NJ/DE Winter 2018-19 OBS Thread
Hurricane Agnes replied to Rtd208's topic in Philadelphia Region
Should have used chains instead! They would have made a cool sound on the sidewalk. Boy do I remember the "snow tire" ritual every year (we had a station wagon back then so the tires were huge - we kept them in a basement closet off-season). -

Up to 59 and 1.04" of rain so far. Line is incoming but I expect it will just be heavier rates (assuming it holds together as it approaches the city). I think that is the warm front. -

Currently 57 and breezy with light - moderate rain since about 3 am depositing 0.61" at post time. My sis texted about 30 minutes ago that their huge trampoline tipped over. We have had way worse winds since they got that thing (they've had it for a couple years) and it has never toppled. Am guess that the ground may still be frozen where it was sitting and the variable SE/SW wind gusts hit it at the right angle. -
Sandy soil! I expect the Pine Barrens are even colder.

The 8 ended up being my lowest for today. The -7 lowest dp (so far) has been a killer to the humidity indoors (even with humidifiers going). Currently 9, mostly sunny, and breezy as heck. -

Currently partly cloudy and temp is 8 with the full moon still out. I did get to see the "super blood wolf moon" (full eclipse) overnight when the temp was a balmy 15 here. It was a bit more cloudy at that time but there were more than enough breaks in the clouds to see it. -
The latest batch of rain gave me 0.07" more for a total of 0.67" rain for the day (1.33" for the event). Temp hit a high here of 44 around 10 am and it's on it's way down. Sun popped out briefly after the rain was done but am back to overcast. Currently 42 and poised for the arctic front to come soon.

Ended up with 0.66" rain yesterday and am up to 0.57" at post time this morning (total 1.23" for the 2 days so far). Temp is 39 with light rain. As I was looking at the radar yesterday, I was noting where the rain/snow line was before it got to me in NW Philly and at one point (see pic from ~8:30ish pm), it looked like there may have been heavier returns over the Pottstown area, so it's possible by the time you got past there, it was mostly gone -

Governor Wolf just declared a state of emergency here in PA. A number of restrictions have been imposed for the weekend - https://6abc.com/weather/gov-tom-wolf-declares-state-of-emergency-for-pa/5095938/

Pile looks good! Then it'll be saturated with rain but if it is large enough, it'll become a solid glacial mound when the flash freeze time comes.
-
Currently SN- with about 1" out there. Temp is 29.

Currently overcast but I can see the moon peeping through. Radar is showing some light stuff overhead but apparently virga. Temp has been fluctuating a bit and is currently 31, dp 17. Had been watching the radar earlier today and saw returns getting sheared away around Lancaster as the storm crept east.

Ugh I remember the 1994 ice storms. During the infamous early January ones, when the tri-state area was completely out of salt (both road salt and consumer ice melt). I had to go on a work-related trip to Baltimore on Amtrak. So decided to drive in and leave the car at 30th Street station and on my way downtown, was considering going up on the expressway (I-76) figuring it would be cleared since it's considered a "primary". But as I approached the ramp to City Line which would go to 76, KYW traffic was announcing that they were closing it, so I kept right on past and went to the station via the Kelly Drive. Ended up that people were trapped on the Schuylkill expressway for like 8 hours. Luckily I got down to Baltimore and back just fine a few days later and was able to buy a couple bags of Halite rock salt down there to bring back in my suitcase! Our house ended up being the only one on the block with a sidewalk that was clear and dry!

6 inch Snowstorms - How Frequent are they??
Hurricane Agnes replied to ChescoWx's topic in Philadelphia Region
I think I found that thread here - Growing up, my dad liked to use slide film to take pics so I have a box of slides somewhere (a few that we had converted to print) that are in color with me and one of my sisters (the youngest wasn't born yet) after the 1966 12" storm here in Philly, complete with shovels, snowsuits and Yogi Bear boots standing in front of our garage door (I was 4). Other than that, the snow was really stingy although I recall maybe one or two times where there was enough in the backyard to attempt to make a snow fort - and it may have been during the February 1973 time period. Of course the 1978 storm was epic in terms of ending the snow drought, with snow the consistency of which was perfect to make a good-sized snowman on our front lawn, but by then I was in high school. -
