I can assure you I would love that "boring" story, as I'm all too familiar with battles with the wife over such trivial matters haha. It's an Accurite 5-in-1 that has one of those solar powered fans that constantly pulls fresh air over the sensor to avoid spikes, which is why I'm fairly certain the fan is just pulling in some of the nearby super-heated air from above the black surface. The station seems to read dead-on outside of those sunny hours and in particular my overnight lows always align exactly as one would expect for my given location and elevation.

Low of 71 here. So, I've been meaning to bring this up for a while, but some of you may have noticed (although perhaps not ha) that I've only been posting low temps the last couple of months since I installed my new weather station. Well, that's because the new station has been prone to temp spikes of at least 3-5 degrees during the hours of peak solar irradiance. It can also wildly fluctuate during the midday hours in a way that would make MDT blush. I am 99% certain that the culprit is one of those black mesh shade cloths (similar to what is used at plant nurseries) that my wife put up on top of our pergola. The weather station is also attached to the top of the pergola and while not directly above the shade netting, it is within like a foot of where it ends and does sit a smidge higher. It is clear to me that the black covering is emitting some excess radiation that, depending on wind direction, is being picked up by the temp sensor and leading to the spikes and fluctuations. Anyway, the shade covering is coming down in October and I hope to have accurate daytime highs to report at that time. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Happy day-before-Friday!

Agreed, and just like that NWS has dropped my high for today from 97 to 93.

We’ll see what tomorrow brings. I know you’re a fan of the “last day always pops the highest” mantra ha. But yeah, I think overall that’s a fair statement.

I was there and I agree. A total program-shifting moment. As for weather, so to recap.......we broke the record Monday, tied yesterday's record, and have legit shots at today and tomorrow's records, which stand at 96. Quite the impressive event we've got going here. Then hopefully some rain and relief.

Morning all, hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend. I was a bit off the grid, being at the Penn State game Saturday and out on the boat yesterday. I see my soft record fell yesterday ha, and I expect today’s to easily do the same. I gotta say though, it didn’t feel bad out on the water. The solid northerly breeze kept things decent. Would not have guessed temps got that high all around the area. Anyway, must catch up on some forecasting here and see what’s shaking.

Chesco, can you elaborate on the history of this reporting site? I assume the observing station wasn't always at its current high-elevation site? And if not, where has it been located throughout its history and when was it moved? Also, who have the observers been for said site? Anything at all you could offer up would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Same here, a nice even 50 spot. Had all the windows open and the house got down to 62. Glorious. I got 1.28" in August and am sitting at 22.01" for the year. The next week looks dry as a bone.

I'll put a bow on this by saying I think it's been a beautiful summer. Sure, it's been a bit dry at times in certain locales and yes there were a couple of days with some wildfire smokiness. But hey, it's summer and no season is ever perfect. Overall, it was a nice mix of weather and no real extreme heat. I'm pleased and would sign up for ten more like it. I agree with that sentiment, and definitely think the soft record of 93 on Labor Day falls. Although, nothing is guaranteed.

How about this for one of the most impressive and sneaky heat events of all-time for our area.......1941 owns the daily max record for four consecutive days in October from the 4th through the 7th, with values of 88, 97, 93, and 97. Wow.

Just adding some numbers here: MDT has 13 days in September with a record max of at least 95; another four are 94; and, the first day where the record max falls below 90 is September 28.

Low of 57 here and an absolutely splendid few days on tap. I haven't mowed here in two weeks and have no imminent plans to do so.

At least some relief is on the way throughout the day today, setting up a beautiful few days before the heat settles in. MDT daily max records for 9/4 - 9/8 as follows: 93 -94 - 96 - 96 - 99 I think we break the record on Labor Day and possibly more beyond that. Of note, the records for 9/2 and 9/3 are 102 on back-to-back days in 1953. Yahtzee!

Low of 71 and zero rain overnight. Now, there were a couple tiny showers that popped over me as I was leaving for work this morning but no more than a couple hundredths. Not totally shocked based on what some of the models were showing yesterday but given what my NWS forecast said, and the bleak look over the next couple of weeks, this was extremely disappointing.

There is no time that is too early to begin tailgating! With that said, I would also arrive in the 9-11 timeframe. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Things not looking as potent for tonight's activity, particularly for those of us in the southeastern part of the valley. As Bubbs mentioned, GFS is touting record-breaking type heat for all of next week. Summer is delayed but not denied.

Not sure if I told you this, but I'm a life-long Packers fan as well. To say I'm shocked that Clifford made an NFL opening day roster as the backup QB is the understatement of the year. Sadly, I fear it says more about the quality of Green Bay's QB room ugh. As always, I hope to be wrong.

Nice! Going to Iowa are ya? You will not be disappointed, few things like it in sport. Unfortunately, I can't make this year's whiteout, will be one of the only ones I've missed. I generally only get to 1-2 home games a year anymore with the kids being so young. I sell the rest of my tickets.

Potential is there to be roasting all week. Labor Day's record at MDT is a soft 93, getable. I'll be there Sauss! The drunk guy wearing white, should be easy to spot.

I know you're being tongue in cheek but we should end August with an avg. temp ~75.5, which would be more than 3 degrees higher than the hottest September on record at MDT, that being the 72.2 from 1961. Interestingly enough, the top four Septembers are all 1970 and earlier. Hey, would take one hell of a feat but I'm not ruling it out haha!
