  1. It’s probably a function of being further from the coast but more importantly it’s likely a function of not getting lake effect clouds and junk on those clear cold nights.
  2. This morning was no exception. Washington Dulles and Knoxville both got colder than we did. So did Huntsville, Alabama.
  3. Especially when you consider all time record cold. Some warmer cities are better at extreme cold than we are. Cincinnati has been colder than we’ve ever been on three different dates. Knoxville, TN has been colder than we’ve ever been once. Louisville’s all time record low is the same as ours.
  4. Fairly soft daily record considering there are quite a few late October days with records in the teens to low 20s, I thought we had a shot at it. Still have yet to set a daily record low in 2023. Last daily record low was set in the middle of the afternoon on 12/23/22.
  5. And we’re on the board, officially. Earliest first measurable since 2013.
  6. Still an outside shot at getting our first freeze before 1am and more likely by tomorrow morning, but I’m skeptical. NWS forecast near 30 last night and we only got down to 34 this morning.
  7. While we’re on the subject of places that aren’t in central PA (like Philadelphia and Chester County), it should be noted that Dulles just recorded its latest 85 degree temperature on record a few minutes ago and even got to 86, so I understand why the cope is happening today of all days.
  8. If this morning’s low of 63 at PIT holds, which is pretty likely, it’ll be the 2nd latest date in a calendar year with a low of 63 or higher (11/1/1929, 65).
  9. 39 years on this earth and the only true moment of joy I’ve experienced as a baseball fan was the 2013 wild card game where Johnny Cueto dropped the ball and Russell Martin proceeded to blast a home run on the next pitch.
  10. I can assure you that any Phillies fan crying today looks ridiculous to every Pirates fan on earth.
  11. PIT: AGC: Not sure I’ve ever seen that much of a difference.
  12. Looks like AGC managed a freeze on the hourly obs. PIT is going to come up just short at 33, it appears.
  13. Well looks like we got there and then some, before midnight even so yesterday’s low was 37 and looks like today’s will go into the books as 33 or 34.
  14. Uh oh. 30s aren’t a slam dunk. Our quest for the first October ever without 30s is still alive.
  15. We should be able to seal the deal on our 8th above normal month so far in 2023, against the highest normals of all time. Sitting at +3 with 12 days to go, mostly normal to above. Only May and June have been below normal.
  16. GFS really gives us one shot at 30s next week. It’s far from guaranteed.
  17. Finally cleared out and got to 41 at PIT. Coldest morning of the season officially and one day short of the record for latest first lower 40s (1882).
  18. Then I guess we’ll also stop keeping track of 90 degree days, since that’s as relevant as 39.
  19. Is “first 30s” really any more obscure of a record than first freeze, which is a common weather statistic?
  20. Pretty damning to see that we’re deep into October and DuBois has yet to see 30s.
  21. Admittedly some of it is a bit cherry picked, but things like reaching the lower 40s later than any other year on record are a little more concrete. I do think we see 30s next week before that massive ridge comes in.
