  1. But you can't just do that. These nations have evolved into their own peoples.
  2. This stuff is pretty upsetting to me. The idea of escalation into world war with the weapons that people have right now is just downright disturbing to me. I guess though, if 1/2 of the world population went extinct, it would give other species like Chimpanzees a chance to recover so at least there is that? It is disturbing to me
  3. I can't really understand the mindset of Putin. Russia as it is, is a HUGE country full of vast untainted and beautiful lands, and the people have a rich and interesting heritage and culture. If the dash cam videos I have seen are any indication, the Russian's peoples lives seem to have improved in the last few decades. I have always had hopes on Russia becoming a great friend. I feel like cooperative friendships can get you way further. I feel like people get driven into this behavior out of fear, and I don't know if it is necessary because there are probably tons of leaders in the West who would like to cultivate a relationship with Russia, if for no other reason than the fact that it would theoretically yield prosperity for all parties involved. I am pretty upset that they invaded. I figured it was going to happen, but I was holding on to hope that it would not happen and I was hoping there would be a surprise resolution crafted.
  4. Yes, you can. And that is the mystery. With my phone, usually what it takes is if I am blocked from accessing an article through my news app, I can turn and google it and it will pop up and I can enjay it. I think a lot of the payment forms of getting the news boil down to convenience of access, not outright ability to get it altogether.
  5. The translation to having to pay to look at some news sites is synonymous with having to put a couple quarters into the metal box on top of the bigger metal box to get your paper
  6. So I signed up for Duolingo real quick, and now I am learning Ukrainian. I actually chose to do this because I had actually used Duolingo to start learning Russian a few years ago, but like many things, I lost interest I guess because I was working a lot. I signed up to spend 15 minutes a day doing it, and I can already remember how effective Duo Lingo is... And if I keep at it maybe I can become useful as a bi-lingual person who speaks Ukrainian. Kind of a big commitment to learn a new language but given the circumstances I trust that I will actually keep going until I know how to speak Ukrainian.
  7. They probably don't but I am actually intending on being cute. I did not intend to actually encourage you to go, but I guess I should have said that, because there are people on this forum who have the resources to go anywhere.
  8. Two wonderful places for the weenies https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMurdo_Station https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Base
  9. Bugs? How about that moth in Maine. This moth... Brown Tail Moth... has toxic hairs on it that cause horrific dermatitis that is similar to poison ivy. It is native to Europe but was introduced a couple hundred years ago by accident to New England. At first it took off, then populations of the moth dwindled, only to start flaring up more recently. I think they should do whatever they can to wipe that moth out here. Its not native to New England, and has no business tormenting people's skin in Maine. Arizona has a large population.... of scorpions. And those scorpions WILL go into your house for shelter and crawl into bed with you.
  10. It portends some relief from biting cold soon, but we won't really enjay the new regime until it is 77 degrees and the forest turns a shade of lime green with lots of bugs and animals frolicking everywhere.
  11. They say this time of year can be psychologically hard on people. And I think I know why. It’s been winter for a long time. But in addition, something teasing and tantalizing to the senses is going on: major increase in daylight and sun intensity. It messes with the human, who then becomes taunted because they expect it to be 70 degrees outside when instead it’s 15. I don’t actually know if that’s why there is an uptick in mental distress in Morch. But it’s my best guess. I personally look forward to the below image: which in truth, is a much more advanced state of “Spring” than the one you get (today) right now when it’s still meteorological AND calendar winter and there’s a slab of ice everywhere.
  12. It makes some sense, It would mess with me as a kid, I would actually expect that as long as a warning was in effect, I could expect more of whatever. NOW if I can get 70 per cent of average snowfall in a season I am happy. 2019-2020 on the other hand was unacceptable except for being balmy.
  13. It wants to pick up and snow but in regards to accumulating snow it isn’t quite pulling it off. Weirdly, winter storm warning is running til 12am Saturday but the forecast itself says “cloudy” Perhaps tug of war with computerized signaling or account of poor road conditions expected
  14. Late in the game it said 3 to 4 inches of frozen precip and that is exactly what we got. It was right about the sleet making it’s way further inland, and late in the game the NAM going slightly colder was also right. I knew it was going on be messy travel even in most of southern CT with frozen precip by the time I went to bed and it appears that is what transpired. The other models appear to be right in their prediction of frozen precip occurring pretty far south on the coastal plane Though I called out of work because my car did not have the ability to travel in two to three inches of pure sleet, and due to nearly impossible long distance travel, they are extremely slow today because nobody else wants to be out either. And they are on the south coast. Whatever precip is left, it appears it is changing back to snow here now. Flakes falling now.
  15. Travel-wise there appears to be a big difference between this and the equivalent depth of snow. Everyone here already knows that, but I have a view of Rt 32 and there ain’t much traffic on it. And a lot of places in the interior are closed today. if there is 3 inches of snow it doesn’t stop New England. But this is another matter. It’s much more difficult to negotiate if you just have a regular car
  16. I don’t think he did to be honest. When you simply glance outside it doesn’t look that bad. I tried to go to work today… and didn’t back out until my tires did not grip enough to get out of the parking spot. Our lot had not been cleared so there was no going anywhere. Hardly anyone is out today and places are closed so I don’t feel too bad. I am tempted to call in to see if they need me tomorrow, Just to help out and make up for the loss. Dad points out he is in the little rain shadow but Hartford is not exactly Las Vegas
  17. Curious about the CT valley, my dad in West Hartford says there simple “isn’t much” of anything. I have been asking him “you didn’t get a dense slab of sleet” he’s like “don’t think so, doesn’t look like it”. What happened over there I wonder. Anybody?
  18. It’s no joke I tell ya, no joke. Sleetbound. 3 inches in the open. The 2.5 was the eyeball amount on the car.
  19. My mom and I tried to get out and go to work. As you know it is a 40 mile drive. But I could not even get the car out of the parking lot. The wheels would just spin in the sleet. I did not want to call out because I am trying to impress right now.
  20. About 2 to 2.5 inches of a sleet/snow crust here. This is my first ever true sleet storm, the first of its kind I have lived through in memory. Obviously I have seen sleet before, but not ACCUMULATING sleet.
  21. Hard to know the fine details, but it appears that precip in NYC metro has not started as snow, FWIW
  22. All things considered, Short terms packing a fair amount of frozen precip nearly all the way down to the water... Looking at some 10:1 maps show 6 inches of snow clear into Groton, which means even this location just might be heavily glazed over with a mix of sleet and snow, not just wet. These short term models keep me just inside a solution that is snowier than not. I Think only the NAM is relentless about a plain rain scenario for the first 10 miles of the CT coast. This gives me the idea that virtually all of CT could be a crusty skating rink for the morning commutes tomorrow, even when the coast changes to some rain. Temperature dropped one degree in Groton to 31 degrees since 2-3 hours ago It is tantalizing, but the abrupt trend returning colder and wetter I have been praying for on the short terms has not quite materialized.
