  1. But isn’t there some evidence out there that the NAO and perhaps the AO operate on decadal cycles? CAPE and PSU would know this. If so what’s happening could just be part of that. IMO, 18-19 was a decent winter, at least here. The other 4 were bad, with last year being a lol joke. But before that 09-10, 10-11, 12-13, 13-14, 14-15 were decent to extremely good winters. Again speaking for mby. So if I get on average 6 of 11 winters that are good, I’m gonna be ok with that.
  2. That’s a 4 year data set. Not sure I’d draw too many conclusions from that. But hey I’m just posting thoughts not trying to challenge your ideas. You are a valuable contributor here.
  3. I think it’s a little early for the new era. When would you say this new era began? And even if the global climate is different, have we already nailed down the local climate impacts? How big is the data set? I’m old enough to remember some crap winters in the early 70’s, late 80’s, early 90’s and late 90’s. I remember being a kid riding a new bike in 70 degree temps in Christmas Day somewhere around 1970. Winter can go on runs of terrible. This isn’t the first time it’s ever happened.
  4. I’ll wager, literally, with anyone that we average colder than last year with more snow. That’s a very safe bet because that bar is very low.
  5. That’s impressive. High here was only 64.
  6. We are already between 1.1 and 1.3 here depending upon your source. That’s way more than forecast already.
  7. Leaves in Winchester are probably two to perhaps three weeks earlier than normal. I guess the cold snap jump started them.
  8. I see clippers and gradient setups in our future. And my favorite, cutters into CAD
  9. I agree with this one part in particular. The dark part. You can plant seed in bare soil, cover part of it with straw and leave the other part uncovered and the covered seed will immediately germinate while the uncovered either won’t germinate at all or will be very slow to do so. That darkness matters for seed that is not fully covered by soil.
  10. The next time you core your lawn do it with the grass really high. Wait a day or two and then cut the lawn short. Doing this will obliterate the plugs giving you a bunch of loose soil sitting there that will aid in the germination of your seed.
  11. If you have straw or you seeded existing grass I don’t think the rain will hurt your seed. Probably help to have some heavy rain drive that seed to the soil
  12. Peak will be gone up there in two weeks. This upcoming weekend is likely to be the one closest to peak. Was up there last weekend and the color was already pronounced.
  13. Can somebody post a couple of total precip maps? I’ll admit it, I’m just too tired to search. Hey, I’m being honest
  14. Leaves are definitely way ahead of normal.
  15. That should have been a harbinger of our winter last year.
  16. BWI 11/2 IAD 10/23 DCA 11/2 RIC 11/2 Tie 81
  17. I have always felt the Pacific is the dominant player because we are downstream of it. We may need blocking to get big snows but with a +PNA at least we are usually cold with at worst chances for small events and less likely to have a complete crap bucket of a winter like last year.
  18. Heck no. Let’s have a meltdown now. Get this off to a good start.
  19. It was oh so close to being a really good winter though
  20. Even more remarkable is that KOKV hasn’t had a temperature above 70 in 8 days in the middle of September. Love to see the last time that happened.
  21. Invasive species from Asia have done enough damage that you’d think we’d spend a good bit of effort to stop it. After 4 billion chesnut trees, all the ash trees, the stink bugs, now this one you’d think we might pay closer attention. Interesting that with both of these, their first documented appearance was in Pa.
  22. I personally think they are moving south as time progresses. I know here they are much less populous than they were 8 or so years ago. I also know that there was a time when my sister who lives in Knoxville had never heard of them but now is overrun with them. We can only hope
  23. Coldest forecast low so far. Have been below forecasts each night. Is this the night of first freeze at KOKV?
