Oh yeah.  Breezy, refreshingly cool/dry air-mass.   High temps in the low 70s.  People in sweatshirts and huddled under blankets for the fireworks.  Lows dipped into the 40s that night out here.  I remember actually being chilly that late-afternoon (in the shade) at a cook-out.  DPs in the low/mid 40s.  It felt like October.  It was simply amazing, and every-bit as rare as a HECS.  In fact, I'd argue it was more rare, and I enjoyed it every bit as much.

July 4th was memorable because of the holiday, but the "cold" snap later in July was even more impressive.  Low of 48 at IAD on 7/30/14 after a high (no precip!) of 74 on the 29th.

    Doesn’t matter. Just normal variation.

We’ve had so many really light events that it didn’t dawn on me that we were headed back under climo.  Mowed the lawn, mostly to pick up the late winter leaves, and there was much more dust than I expected.  Soil a few inches down seems fine, though.

Maybe I'm just way out of touch with the farther counties, but for most of the immediate DC area it was just windy I think. I went out and ran errands around lunchtime and it was gusty but didn't feel historically so. I don't know anyone who lost power or had any real property damage and it didn't seem like those were widespread based on what I saw on the news. As wind events go I thought the derecho had more lasting impact.

I'm still sticking with Sandy, though. That's the one I think Average Joe MidAtlantic will remember in 20 years.

Interesting.  I found Sandy to be pretty boring inside the DC Beltway.  The only memorable thing about it was the extremely odd nature of the event and the coverage of things elsewhere. The 2018 March windstorm wrecked two houses within a few blocks of my house and had us w/o power for the better part of a day (no outages with Sandy).

Obviously you’re gonna get some individual specimens that normally need full sun, thrive in a shady spot. And vice versa. Also, if you’ve seen a deer within 2000 miles in the past decade, do not plant hostas. Or Black-eyed Susans, or cone flowers.

That's interesting, we haven't had any problem with cone flowers.  Hostas are basically just deer food.  They also love cucumber plants for some reason.

  5. @CobaltI saw in one of the other threads that you found the web archive version of the old board.  Back years ago, when the server was still active, I had copied a bunch of the links over for our big events.  But when the server went down for good, the links went dead.  If you, or someone else, wanted to somewhat recreate what I had done, that would be cool.  There are some gems in there.

Easter 2017 (April 16th)  did not establish an all-time high DC Easter maximum (95, set on April 18, 1976) nor an all-time high DC Easter minimum (66, set on April 6, 1947), but did tie the all-time high DC average Easter temperature with a maximum/minimum of 89/65 (average of 77.0), equal to the April 18, 1976 average (95/59).

    Nice digging.  Thanks.

Welp the BWI record just got BTFO. 70 so far, previous record was 64 in 1904.

DCA 73 vs the record of 64.  I think Ian on twitter noted the other day that 64 was tied for the lowest individual daily high temp on record at DCA.  Now Dec 17th stands alone.

Astronomical summer (June 21-September 23, on average) was record-setter at IAD (78.0 vs previous record of 76.8 in 2010) and second at DC/DCA (81.1 vs 81.7 in 1980).   Also, composite summer (June 1-September 23) was record-setter at both (IAD: 77.1 vs  previous record of 76.5 in 2010 and DC/DCA: 80.17 vs previous record of 80.14 in 2010).

Really impressive/depressing.  Thanks for crunching the numbers.

So, from your original post yesterday set a new rainfall record for the 15th for DC?

"August 15th has never had more than 1.15 inches of precipitation"

    RECORD EVENT REPORT

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BALTIMORE MD/WASHINGTON DC 0122 AM EDT TUE AUG 16 2016

...RECORD DAILY MAXIMUM RAINFALL SET AT WASHINGTON NATIONAL DC... A RECORD RAINFALL OF 1.16 INCHES WAS SET AT WASHINGTON NATIONAL DC YESTERDAY. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 1.15 SET IN 1941.

Blacksburg VA did something yesterday I haven't seen in a while. They tied both their record warmest low and coolest high on same day with a 68 and 71 reading. Big 3 degrees difference, which is also hard to pull off this time of year. They also set a rainfall record for the day with 0.95 inches.

    That is unique.  Good find.
