Last comment about the birds...I promise. If you look at COD radar on 48 frames you can see several of these circles and they look to line up with the Susquehanna river up to Harrisburg. I'll see if I can find a bird forum for future posts...I'm sure the folks in there will have as good of a sense of humor as this place.
There is a very small field of researchers that use radar and other remote sensing to analyze animal movement (mostly birds/bats). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeroecology

Yes...I can’t say that it has happened every day but most mornings here recently it has. I agree, it has to some type of wildlife. Strange tho that birds would fan out in a perfect circle....
Maybe they are scrambling to bulk up before the bay freezes over in December!
Sent from my iPad using TapatalkThey don’t fan out in a circle, it is the angle of the radar beam that makes it look like that. As the birds go up in altitude the intersection of the beam with the birds gets further away from the radar, making it look like a circle when applied to a flat plane.

3.47” total. That’ll do.

Radar estimates are low today. There are places in Chantilly with 5-6”.
-
Well over 3” on the day now. Quite a summer.

Is that lightning detector actually accurate with the strike locations?
I don’t know the exact accuracy, but the bolt and the thunder were nearly instantaneous. Can’t have been more than a couple blocks away and the direction is correct.

6.62"/hr instantaneous rain rate. Nice.

You are having terrible luck.
Hoping for a bit on Tuesday to tide us over. The Wed-Fri timeframe, and even into next weekend looks awesome for nice weather. Feel bad for the West though. That is an unrelenting bake.

Scorched? Seriously, NPZ?
You haven't seen my backyard
I really wish my wife liked zoysia. That part of the front yard looks stellar. Fescue and this climate do not mix.

0.03” is not going to help my scorched yard. Amazing how the precip just shut off on Aug 1.

Yes, like the rest of the region. But less.
I’m at 2.65”. You are trouncing me.
quick edit - 1.25” of that was in the hours after midnight on the 1st. 1.40” from the morning of the first to present.

No DC split this time. Good VILs at Bailey's Crossroads headed to the Arlington Cemetery.

Weird statistical quirk. For the second time in August so far, we’ve received the exact same totals on consecutive days. Earlier in the month it was two 0.35” days and this weekend was 0.21” each day.

Not sure why a flash flood watch was issued. No real indication of heavy rainfall on guidance today and it's been bone dry on the past couple of weeks.
3 hr flash flood guidance is still under 2” for much of LWX’s area.

Nice downpour, kicked off on a prior boundary.

Amazing how no rain for a week can dry up a yard. Looks good for something this weekend, especially Sunday.

This has been the worst year for tomatoes since we started gardening. We will have maybe a dozen this year if that due to too much rain and a potash deficiency in our soil. The cucumbers, garlic, squash and pumpkins are looking very healthy however. Peaches in the state are doing okay so we'll have a lot to can and pack away for winter.
Our tomato crop is going to be robust this year. Cucumbers were good, squash was good. The raspberries have been terrible. I don't know where I went wrong with them after the first couple years of terrific output.

The earthquake was awesome. Definitely remains one of those "where were you" moments.
