Coastal maine is meh for snow, even central maine is not orders of magnitude greater than say central Mass. you have to get off the CP into the foothills, highlands, mountains or north of Bangor for the difference in snowfall vs CNE/SNE to be pronounced. Maine still has a great local ski scene though, even outside of those better snow areas. Lost Valley, Abram, Black, Snow Bowl, Spruce, Big Squaw, Big Rock, Hermon, Jefferson, Lonesome Pines are all great hills where the blue collar spirit of the sport is alive and doing OK. To a lesser extent you could also include Pleasant and Saddleback to that list. Pleasant at night is still about as blue collar as it gets for the sport. Winterkids is an incredible local nonprofit helping kids and families from all over Maine access the sport and LLBean underwrites tix to Black and Abram where it costs $35 every day of the season. Vermont has better skiing but the culture here in Maine is closer to the sports past when it was for working people not just yuppies and retirees.

Yup, from the southwest ridge

Today I don’t care about November, winter sucking (or not), hurricanes etc. this is one of the nicest stretches of October weather I’ve ever experienced, just trying to enjoy it

So gross out. Loving our new heat pumps. In our new climate living without AC in NNE away from the coast is insanity stuff. Incredible summer for lake things though. We’re blessed with them here. From last night:

Gotta be some big local departures cause my lawn is doing great edit: saw the photo was from 2015

Holy cow what a day. I’d sign up for this through October

Biocontrol showing signs of protection against EAB in second growth ash stands in the Midwest. There are also many pockets of ash in very remote locations in Maine that stand a chance. I have been injecting my ash shade trees and will continue to do so. Sad thing is ash is a huge part of creation story for eastern Algonquin tribes like wabanaki.

We’re rocking in western Maine this afternoon. Some good sized hail in this cell. GYX just barely hoisted the warnings in time. .

I think it’s a big shedding event. Seeing it all over southern Maine and eastern New Hampshire. It’s too widespread and sudden to be pest related imo. If it’s needlecast that’s a big deal given how widespread. Most trees will recover

Wood heat plus mini splits plus heat pump hot water heater is the way. They’ve been doing that in Quebec for years since electricity is so cheap there. With the any income rebates in Maine plus the fed tax credit it’s a no brainer if you are looking to make a change from oil heat and window units. Maine has done over 300k installs since 2019.

Duluth, Minnesota is basically Portland, ME circa 2013 but add two ski hills and a ton of mountain biking in city limits. Old industrial city on a big a** waterbody slowly gentrifying. Time to buy real estate here is now imo. Yesterday’s 40 degrees turned into a breezy 70 degrees and sunny. .

Not New England but temp bottomed out at 39 on the car thermo on my drive from Minneapolis to Duluth this afternoon. We’ve had some bad Memorial Day weekends in NE but this is another thing altogether. 35 degree temp drop in 2 hours from MSP. Glad we don’t live here . -

Man you’re courageous riding the roads around here. I gave that up years ago for the dirt. Rather hit a tree than get run over by a teenager on their phone -
51 here. Never even got close to advertised highs in mid 60s
-
Yes. Get there early

Tucks and Boot Spur gullies still loaded up as of today. Incredible weather today and no crowds. I’m sure this weekend will be the gong show Tucks is famous for. .

Great point. The eclipse experience was an open door for millions to share in our collective humanity. That’s why people love it so much, largely because that door is rarely opened in our current society. Imagine if responsible use of psychedelic drugs was the norm. World would be a better place.

Another poster identified the phenomenon as shadow bands. Worth googling, had no idea about it prior.

Maybe some small D1 wet slab issues with this next system but then it’ll go isothermal this weekend and you should be good to go. Those buried weak layers will be gone. Spring time hazards will start appearing next week and the lower parts of sherb are probably numbered days.

Well that was cool. Also saw some weird light wave effect happening on the snow in the field just before and after totality. Can’t post videos or else I’d share. .

I think those photos were from 16-17 but I’ll let lava confirm. Both good but 16-17 better locally.

That was a great year. Last one we had that really went big although 17-18 and 18-19 weren’t too bad either. Not sure what to make of this season. Today was great though. .
