I ended up treating in the spring and fall, but essentially two different areas of the lawn. I didn't have chickens at the time, but I'm with you...I don't think I would have treated anywhere near their run (we don't let them free range in the actual yard, anyways, but still...) The optimal time is definitely in the late summer. I did do one spring application and it seemed to stop the damage area. I have an area on the far edge of my property I'm watching right now, the only area I've never treated. I'd like to hit it before they hatch and lay more in the areas I've already treated, so I'm waiting for the right conditions. I need the soil temp to be above 44F and for it to be a nice cloudy wet day (like today). Might get the temp high enough next week, we'll see.

Nematodes, my man. Haven't found a grub since treating 2 years ago. They will be more effective and environmentally safe than any chemical.

Right on time for me, 3/31 was the first observed peeper this year. For 3 of the last 5 years, peepers have first sang on March 31, with 4/5/20 & 3/24/21 being the other two years.

Thanks guys. I like both but this time of year I'm winding down my stout inventory, not adding to it. I might pick up a 2pack of stout, but they're pretty steep. Mostly shooting for IPAs today. I see they have a drive through option. My mom lives 2 miles away but I've never stopped in, at least since Monson.

We've been doing that and so far so good, thankfully. We've got a much smaller flock, and we don't give them much of a chance to be tempted to try a bite of a freshly laid egg as someone in the family is checking every hour or two.

ha. I like the idea of a fire, but my kids would be happier with a burial for sure. Fire is just convenient, no freezer space required.

Interesting, because we just got her home from the vet and they said "I don't see any more mites" so it sounds like it did enough to prevent the next generation. The other chicks were still pecking at her today, though, so I wonder if there's some other weird bird dynamic going on. She's #2 in the pecking order but even 3 and 4 are taking shots at her neck (which she occasionally returns). Need to figure out better dust-bathing options for winter. Neighbor has a woodstove, might need to regularly collect ash from them. The vet said they'd get back to us on the eggs. I'm sure it'd be fine but just want to be sure. They gave us a syringe for electrolytes and said to keep her separated for a few more days until her crop is better and her neck has some time to grow new feathers (of which the vet noted there were some coming in). Keep her on probiotics and it should work itself out. Really glad, would suck to lose a hen in year 1, not to mention having to euthanize/bury one.

Ugh, sucks. We used permethrin and self powdered. Cleaned out the coop and run, treated there as well. We have been tossing the eggs since treatment because we can't get a clear consensus on whether or not they're safe to eat. Hate it. Not sure the treatment worked on her as it's been about 5 days and she's still got them. Anytime she's around the other chicks in the yard they're constantly trying to peck them off her. The vet had a cancellation this AM so she went in, and got the text that she's returning home so at least there's hope. I said if they don't think there's a path forward then to put her down there. Not sure I could bring myself to do it myself just yet.

None of that here. Gave the sick one free reign of the yard for an hour before letting the others out. She ate a ton of grass, bugs and various grit around the yard. She's acting pretty normal, and no puke after the eggs. Crop still pretty swollen, though. She's got mites, too, which we treated earlier in the week. Other chicks have been pecking at her, another reason to keep them separated. Good melting today either way with a high of 53 and steady winds out of the WSW.

certain breeds are better than others for sure. But even then, they all have a different personality. The one I have that's sick is the type that could do that, she's basically a puppy dog.

Thanks man, I really appreciate that and all the advice. I haven't smelt her yet, poop is liquid but nothing bright green. More of a muted brownish light green. That's interesting about the feed, we'll have to look into soy free. And anytime we have some leftover sweet potatoe they crush it. That and eggs are their favorite people food, but never thought to incorporate sweet potatoe into their everyday diet.

Yeah, just tried giving her some yolk and meal worms. A few bites and immediate puke.
