Well, you have people that don't really want to wear a mask, but have to do so because it's mandated where they live. Those people aren't as likely to properly wear a mask, because they don't really want to for whatever reason. People who are wearing masks also tend to think that the masks protect them and they don't have to do the other public health procedures. There seems to be a misunderstanding in that the masks aren't magical, and simply lower the risk of transmission.
-
Because their argument is that "masks don't work". And when a study comes along that shows that 85% of people who got the virus were frequent mask wearers then that just gives them ammo to say 'I told you so'. Dr. Fauci mentioned at one time that masks provide a false sense of security, so people who wear them are less likely to social distance, less likely to frequently wash their hands, and more likely to touch their face to adjust the mask. I find this to be mostly true, which only increases the risk of obtaining the virus.

Europe is locking back down in places as they have had tremendous spikes there recently. Germany just recorded their highest # since the pandemic began. https://news.yahoo.com/germany-sees-6-638-daily-035339283.html France just declared a public health emergency. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-france-emergency/france-declares-public-health-state-of-emergency-over-covid-19-idUSKBN26Z2PQ

Yeah, it'll probably be similar to that, but maybe even farther NW depending on the AO this year. There's been an issue with recent years having a +AO for most of winter. We need a -AO badly.

Decided to put "Winter" in quotes because you never know. Looks like a La Nina year this year. I've heard 2007-2008 a lot come up in analog discussions. That year had sharp Arctic airmasses push through from time to time and get hung up along I-44. Hoping for more of a -AO this year.

Conley says he's having "no symptoms" today. https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/519821-white-house-physician-says-trump-experiencing-no-symptoms-of-covid-19 “This morning the President’s team of physicians met with him in the Residence. He had a restful first night at home, and today he reports no symptoms,” Conley wrote in a memorandum issued Tuesday afternoon, less than five days after Trump was diagnosed with COVID-19. “Vital signs and physical exam remain stable, with an ambulatory oxygen saturation level of 95-97%. Overall he continues to do extremely well, I will provide updates as we know more,” Conley wrote.

It has a different effect on different people. Trump received antibodies and remdesivir as part of his course of treatment. Also, if you've previously had any of the coronaviruses in the past (some cause colds) you may have milder symptoms. “We have now proven that, in some people, pre-existing T cell memory against common cold coronaviruses can cross-recognize SARS-CoV-2, down to the exact molecular structures,” Weiskopf says. “This could help explain why some people show milder symptoms of disease while others get severely sick.” https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/immune-cells-common-cold-may-recognize-sars-cov-2 Also, some people are just asymptomatic, the current best estimate is that 40% of people are asymptomatic. Nobody really knows why. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/planning-scenarios.html

Couple of weeks? I don't know about you, but I remember when we shut the country down for 15 days to "slow the spread".... That was what, about 7 months ago? People started blaming those who weren't staying home or wearing masks for all the problems. We have had massive loss of businesses and turned the entire country upside down and while it has prevented loss of life, it's done a massive amount of economic damage. You're not going to be able to lock everyone in their homes for a few months. You aren't going to be able to shut down the entire country for months, that's just not happening. The only thing you can do is protect those at greatest risk, and educate people on what to do, and most people know what to do to lower their risk. Whether they choose to do that is entirely up to them.

I'd say both sides politicized it. Also, it does not help when people try to "mask shame" others. It results in pushback. Some people don't like being told what to do and will do the exact opposite out of spite. But people try to 'mask shame' instead of nicely and calmly explaining things to those who are uninformed or misinformed.
-
I don't disagree with that assessment. We had a mask mandate here for 2-3 weeks or so? The numbers during that time fell to around 20-40 active cases from around 70-80. However, at the end of the last week of the mandate, the numbers surged back up above 70 and the mandate was lifted due to financial concerns on the city, and the cases have since peaked at about 225 active cases. People get tired of wearing masks, they get tired of social distancing, so they stop doing it. Europe is experiencing record levels of new cases because of "pandemic fatigue" as well. https://www.bbc.com/news/health-54417547

Oh, I'm not against masks and I wear one when I'm in large groups of people (which I usually avoid). I also seem to be the only person that actually socially distances in Joplin. I'm giving you a reason as to why the messaging became muddled and why people got confused about it. Add in the fact that we are now 7 months into the pandemic and people seem to be "over it".
-
Because it's all in the messaging. People are looking back at what should have been done and blaming others for not doing it, when you have Dr. Fauci making contradictory statements. My own mother who is absolutely terrified of coronavirus even noticed this and grew to not like Dr. Fauci as a result. As the situation was unfolding, Dr. Fauci was telling people it was ok to go on a cruise, or that he was more worried about the flu. That sticks in people's minds.
-
It shows that the "message" was obfuscated from the start. Here you have Dr. Fauci downplaying masks entirely and saying the only ones that should be wearing them are medical professionals and people who are sick. In addition, here's an earlier article showing Dr. Fauci's statements at various times downplaying the risk as well, as the situation developed. https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2020/04/03/virus_experts_early_statements_belie_prescient_portrayal_142845.html

Just wanted to give you all a heads up who don't follow on Facebook. Doug Heady's 11 year old son has Stage 4 cancer. So sad news to hear that. Some kind of rare sarcoma. -

No sustained negative AO, been stormy at the pole. No blocking. Haven't had a negative AO since the end of Dec. Models were always wrong in the long range, seasonal models weren't bad as they indicated that would happen. After a long sustained -AO for months before winter, it had to flip back to balance out. The EPO wasn't able to sustain itself either. End result. Fast moving zonal systems with mostly Pacific air. -

Yeah, sleet is so useless. Eats up your snow. There may be more storms to watch out for when it comes to frozen stuff, models can't figure it out yet, though. -

I don't know why Springfield can't recognize similar setups and build in a bigger warm nose than anticipated since the models frequently miss it. Similar systems have the exact same issues time and time again. -
