The temperature readings gets alot of criticism but wind direction, speed and to some extent rainfall obs havent been great there either.

Sun came out for 20 mins now the rain is back, even though its not really showing on radar

For now portions of the Hutch, and most of the Saw Mill pkwy is closed. Bronx River pkwy is closed past 233rd st to White Plains

Pouring again but with wind now. Lots of road closures, if it has parkway in its name its probably closed

I tried to get by the Bronx River near Gun Hill, but its pouring so relentlessly I gave up. I remember after Irene it was maybe the highest levels I ever saw, at the current rate this will probably reach or exceed that but I dunno if upstream is getting as much rain as the city to add to the runoff down here. Some of the parks along the parkway got covered in several feet of water back then.

Storm surge watch extend from LI and Southern Westchester into Bronx and Queens. Odds 5 boro bike tour gets canceled... They never do for rain even torrential but never had to deal with tropical systems since its usually in May.

Its been a kinda tough season..everytime I try go to beach its cool/rainy, or warm but water closed for shark sightings. Sun I'll be at the 5 boro bike tour, been counting on good, mostly dry weather but it's looking more iffy??

Yeah more breaks from the heat than in recent memory. Doesnt have to have alot of 90s but the relatively high amount of below 80 highs and some days mainly in the 60s all day hurt the perception to some people. There was a few deceptive midnight high temp days that were actually very cool for summer. Also lots of rain in July. Early heat in June adjusted people to extreme heat, then run of the mill warm days dont hit the same after. I wouldnt call it a cool summer, but I get how it could be perceived that way, at least east of the hudson.

The new Census data show urban population is growing rapidly in the US while rural pop continues to decline. We are an increasingly urban nation in terms of where people live. Southern and western cities are growing the most, some places with limited water supply as someone pointed out here earlier. But still NYC is now up to 8.8 million and Westchester County passed 1 million for the first time ever, thanks in part to Yonkers, now the 3rd largest city in NYS, passing Rochester Overall population growth is the slowest its been in a long time which isn't a good thing, but its trending much more toward cities.

I heard it was a crazy scene at Orchard Beach yday. That storm came through with little warning, wasnt really a period of dark skies developing first, just rapidly from fair skies to thunderstorm. Multiple lightning strikes on the sand sent ppl abandoning their belongings. Unfortunately the teenager in that group of 6 died.

High 97 till t storm raced in right now, down to 91 heavy rain, windy, lots of lightning. Spent a week in FL and I acclimated to it so this heat kinda feels just run of the mill lol. Its never above about 92 there but dew points permanently 77 - 79 makes low 70s dewpoint feel slightly refreshing.

The ones we hear now are the run of of mill cidadas that are around every year in mid to late summer. I read somewhere the much hyped, 17 yr cycle ones are not very prevalent in/around NYC anymore for whatever reason. Increased development, espcially in the suburbs probably. Every new sprawling condo complex or houses and its accompanying parking lot kill some off when its time to resurface. That happens everywhere though so any other factors I dunno. There are more as you go south of NYC, espically by the time to get to DC area, and west to PA as well.

66 now after a low of 61. That just doesnt happen much at all in July, late July at that. Not in recent memory. Weather apps say record low was 62, based out of closest station at LGA, but they fell a degree or two short.

That storm last night lasted surprisingly long. Had some minor basement flooding as well. Pushing a foot of rain in July. Small green space outside is now an out of control rain forest this month.

Suprised by a little downpour in lower Manhattan, really cooled off from an already moderate day. Dare I say, in late July, its actually chilly outside now.

Yeah the AQI got went from the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" category to just plain old "unhealthy." Dont see that around here much. Went to work in person near WTC and it was an impressive view from above, saw Hudson Yards become completely obscured as the day progressed and the haze/smoke get lower and lower, closer to ground level by mid afternoon.

Another day with backdoor kind of feel in mid summer. Cloudy, periods of rain and drizzle all day temps stuck in low 70s.

Explains the disparity in how this summer is perceived heat wise across the area. June was hot but July has had multiple cloudy, dreary, cool (for July) days. Those breaks in the warmth takes away from that summer feel despite a few hot spells. Jersey ppl havent experience that as much.

The sun never fully went away here. Got mostly cloudy for a time with sprinkles at worst. Real dark skies stayed in the distance.
