  1. Precipitation started as rain at my location just west of Eden within the past ten minutes and the temperature and dew point have responded. Was: 33.6/23.1 at 1:50am Now: 31.5/27.6 2:15am Wind: NNE - 8
  2. 33.8/23.6 with mostly cloudy skies. Winds are light and variable.
  3. It may not have been a record, but the ice storm that occurred February 10-11,1994 had some pretty impressive accumulations of ice in NC. It was by far the worst ice storm I ever experienced. In my weather journal I recorded two inches of snow/sleet and 1 1/4" of ice accrual. I was without power for nine days. There were higher amounts of ice reported across the state (Up to 2") and many went without power longer than I did. Here's a link to a short summary of that event: https://climate.ncsu.edu/climate/winter/event_details?e=132
  4. The 0Z GFS looks concerning. The combination of super saturated ground, significant icing, and strong winds as shown would be disastrous for much of the northern foothills and piedmont of NC into southside Virginia.
  5. The temperature at my location just west of Eden went above freezing at 6:20am and currently sits at 32.9. I ended up with right at .10" ice accumulation on trees and elevated surfaces. Driving around Rockingham County and into the Ridgeway area of Henry County VA earlier I found ice accumulations that varied from only a trace in the center of Eden, to as much as .30" in the Wentworth and Western Reidsville areas. Ridgeway had what appeared to be between .25 and .30". The only place I took the time to get out of the car and measure was in Reidsville. The picture below shows Eden at the intersection of NC Hwy 14 and Stadium Drive on the left where little if any ice accumulation can be seen, and a picture from Reidsville near the intersection of Business Hwy 29 and US Hwy 158 on the right where I measured .30". I have seen this scenario play many times over the years where inside the city limits of Eden only marginal accumulations of ice occur while areas immediately surrounding the city have significant amounts. I have found that the HRRR and the 3k NAM usually do well with the topography in this area, especially in situations involving freezing rain. For example, below is an image from the HRRR where the Dan River Basin shows up quite well. It's easy to identify where the Dan River flows out of Patrick County Virginia into Stokes County, and the Mayo and Smith Rivers flow out of Henry County Virginia and feed into the Dan in Rockingham County. Driving around today I was able to confirm that both the HRRR and the 3K NAM did very well in identifying what locations would see the highest accumulations of ice from this event.
  6. Light freezing rain and a slowly rising temperature just west of Eden. Currently 31.1/30.9 Was 30.2/29.7 at 5pm.
  7. The temperature at my location has been on a slow decline since sunrise. Currently 30.4/29.9 with freezing mist/drizzle.
  8. 31.6/30.9 Coudy Light glaze of a few hundredths of an inch on elevated surfaces.
  9. 32.0/31.4 Drizzle and freezing drizzle with a light glaze on elevated surfaces.
  10. For those who live in the western piedmont along the NC/VA border, northwest NC, and southwest VA it appears radar coverage is going to be limited for this upcoming event and whatever may take place much of next week. EQUIPMENT... The KFCX radar will be down for an extended period of time beginning Feb 11th through about Feb 18th for a generator replacement, and replacement other electrical components associated the utility to generator powering of the facility.
  11. Ended up with just 1/2" at my location on the west side of Eden just outside the city limits which all fell within the past 90 minutes. Almost not post worthy. Lowest temperature during the event was 32.5. Current temperature 32.7.
  12. @Disc I would estimate I had up to around .10" by mid-morning yesterday. Most of the rain that fell was run off due to marginal temperatures and intensity. I noticed when driving to Reidsville this morning Wentworth and the western Reidsville area had more icing than I received at my location. Probably in the .10 to .15 range between yesterday and what fell last night.
  13. There wasn't much of a range in the temperature today at my location just west of Eden. I had a high of 32.7 and a low of 31.5 which also happens to be the current temperature. The current dew point is 31.2. There has been some intermittent sprinkles and light freezing rain for the past 30 minutes or so. The pictures below were taken earlier today showing the glaze from the freezing rain that fell this morning.
  14. Very light snow just west of Eden. The dew point went up from 22.8 to 27.0 in the past 45 minutes. Current temperature is 35.6
  15. Have you guys tried clearing your cookies/cache?
  16. After a nice coating of snow earlier, I now have light rain and a temperature of 34.2 in Eden.
  17. Fairly heavy snow falling at my location just west of Eden. The temperature has dropped to 32.9.
  18. Despite having good returns overhead for the past 30 minutes or so, only a random flake or two has been making it to the ground so far. Current temp: 38.3 Dew point 30.1
  19. Starting to see some flakes mixing in just west of Eden.
  20. Special Weather Statement National Weather Service BLACKSBURG VA 855 PM EST Thu Dec 24 2020 NCZ003>005-020-VAZ014-016>020-022>024-032>035-043>045-250315- Rockingham-Surry-Stokes-Yadkin-Botetourt-Patrick-Floyd-Amherst- Carroll-Rockbridge-Pittsylvania-Alleghany-Bath-Henry-Franklin- Montgomery-Campbell-Craig-Roanoke-Bedford- 855 PM EST Thu Dec 24 2020 ...RAPID TEMPERATURE DROP AND RAIN CHANGING TO SNOW... At 851 PM EST, a cold front was located along a line extending from near Burnsville to near Lone Hickory. Movement was east at 30 mph. Temperatures will drop 10 to 20 degrees in less than 2 hours and winds up to 40 mph are possible with this cold front. As the temperatures drop rain will change to snow. A brief period of sleet is likely during the transition. Wet roads and sidewalks will become icy and slick. Locations impacted include... Roanoke... Lynchburg... Danville... Salem... Christiansburg... Eden... and Reidsville. Conditions can deteriorate rapidly in winter weather situations. Be prepared for snow or ice covered roads. Slow down and allow extra time when traveling. A rapid drop in temperatures will lead to the rapid formation of black ice on area roadways. Black ice is nearly impossible to see and will be covered by snow in some locations. Please use extreme caution, especially on bridges, overpasses and around curves. Allow plenty of stopping distance and avoid braking suddenly.
  21. Looking back at my records the low on the 24th came at 11:45pm, so the low for the 24th and the 25th occurred within 8 hours of each other during the same overnight period. I recorded a low of -1 on the 24th (PM), -4 on the 25th (AM), and +2 on the 26th. We had a nice icing event on the 27th with a low of 18 and a high of 29, then there was another cold front that went through on the 29th that resulted in a low of +6 on the 30th and a high of 23. The following morning (31st) the low was +4. Christmas 1983 is in my top 10 weather events I have experienced. The pictures below are of the Smith River in Eden taken on January 1, 1984 where the Ice was between 7 and 9 inches thick and safe enough to walk across.
  22. The coldest Christmas in my lifetime was 1983 in Eden, NC. A cold front moved through on Christmas Eve that dropped the temperature from 34 degrees at midnight to 15 by noon; by sunset the temperature had fallen to +4. The low on Christmas morning was -4 and the high only reached 14 with bright sunshine.
  23. Here's a link to a good site for rainfall estimates that allows you to zoom in to street level. https://www.iweathernet.com/total-rainfall-map-24-hours-to-72-hours It shows 3.96" for my location from this most recent event and I measured 4.07", so it can be used to give a pretty good estimate as to how much rain has fallen. Looking at the rainfall estimates at the link I provided, much of the Dan River Basin in Stokes and Patrick Counties received between 4 and 7 inches of rain. As a result, the Dan River is projected to reach 32.4 feet tomorrow morning in Danville, VA which will become the highest crest ever recorded in Danville if that occurs.
  24. Had a wind gust at my location just NW of Eden of 57mph at 6:10pm as a line of storms moved through.
  25. I suppose it could be hail then. It was textbook graupel up this way. I also measured a 39 mph wind gust around the same time the shower was passing through.
