these 1" events can come in a hour or over three days if the precip didn't stopped for a while...daily 1" days are all included regardles of time of precip...numbers are rounded off to the nearest tenth...events must reach 1.00"...0.99" is not counted...since 2017 I did not have hourly precip numbers...I estimated and used daily amounts...3" events have slackened off in the last few years...the last 4" event was a 5" event in 2014...1983 ha 29 1" or greater events...11 over 2"...1965 had only 5 events and none over 2"...

Thank you Unc and well done. I was 7 and 8 respectively in 54/55 and remember the big alley, a community driveway between 74th and 75th street on 11th Ave,. flooding. I’m not sure if it was from  Diane, one of her mid 50’s sisters or just a cloud burst t storm. I remember the driveway drains overflowing. It was delightful for us JD’s in training. As always ….

I think NYC picked up an inch from yeaterday into early this morning...there was a long gap between rain that started yesterday and the day before on the 30th that doesn't count...Rain this afternoon doesn't count...I have to see the official hourly precipitation amounts to add this to the table...

its official now...NYC had exactly an inch from yesterday into this morning...this was the sixth 1" or greater event this year...

great job Roger...where did you get hourly precipitation for these events?...some years are not available...

Okay, I wasn't aware that your list had any values that were different from 24 hour calendar day, so take my list with that caveat, for example the last three entries of 1938 are the total rainfall from the frontal system and Long Island Express hurricane on three consecutive days.  My method is going to inflate the number of events like that, but at the same time it will miss two consecutive days that reached 1.0" without either of them being that high. As most of the events are just one-day rainfalls with nothing much on either side of them, I would say it at least gives an indication of how past years compare. 1949 looks like a very dry year. I have blocked out zero-rainfall and low-rainfall periods in my file and will post a list of the longest dry spells some time, the other side of the coin.

Most of the EDS entries, if not extensions of the first list of absolute dry spells, contain 9-15 day ADS intervals,

and a few entries such as the last one add no days at either end of a long ADS, so the EDS is the original ADS. 

A few EDS have two ADS in their duration, for example 24d EDS in 1874 had 12d and 11d ADS separated by .02"

21 days from Oct 19 to Nov 8 2000 had only .01" (on Oct 29, dividing this into two ten-day dry spells).

Two long dry spells in Sep-Oct 1914 were separated by only .28" in two days, and narrowly missed combining for an eligible 49-day EDS. 

The average year has 6.4 EDS which include 3.6 ADS. The average EDS is 15 days long. Those associated with an ADS are on average about 14 days long. As the amount of precipitation varies from nil to .10" per 20 days, the total precipitation in all these dry spells is probably around 50" (two fairly dry years, but the total length of these dry spells is about 40 years).

The average year has 88.7 days within the various dry spells, the range is 18 (2014) to 159 (1909). 

1945 and 2014 had the fewest days in qualifying dry years, however, they were not overly wet years, their cycle of wet and dry seemed to be closer to 7-8 days. Considering how much rain fell in 1983, the year managed an almost average output of dry spells, mainly in February and the late autumn. 

This is a frequency distribution of the months involved in the 97 longest absolute dry spells (15 or more days), frequency assigned by nearest 0.1 portions when the dry spell overlaps two months.

This frequency distribution shows that late summer into autumn is favored for long dry spells, winter and early spring least favored, with a slight secondary peak around late May through June. About half of the dry spell frequency is in the period August to October. 

The following is a graph of the number of days each year (1869-2020) within qualifying dry spells. There are peaks around the 1880s, 1900s, 1960s and (early) 1980s.

rain events are like snow events...you can get 5" on a Sunday morning and another 5" Monday afternoon and it will show 5" for both days...but it really was two 5" events...   10" over two days...I looked at the hourly rainfall which was very tedious...if there was a dry period between I did not add them together unless it came in one callander day...I did not see hourly totals for some years so I had to use daily totals...

after going six years without a 4" event in Central Park it gets three so far the summer...I'm not sure what the final total is for Central Park but its close to 7.4"...
