Winds in dust devils can get quite strong. In my senior year of high school, just prior to a baseball game, a dust devils developed and moved across the field. I was about 10-15' from where it developed, a friend of mine was right there and was pelted with tiny pebbles. It blew by me then kept going, getting taller and stronger. It knocked the coach off the bench, sucked up the med kit (which weighted several pounds) and threw it, and it took my notebook full of papers and sucked them up. The papers easily went up a couple hundred feet into the air and where scattered on the street about a 1/4 away. The most impressive part was the umpires pay check was also sucked up and was found 3 days later in South Windsor, CT...about 20 miles or so from West Hartford.
