Although NCDC hasn't released the official numbers, the ranks have been updated for July in the previous years. It looks like 2012 will go down as the third warmest on record in Indiana, behind 1936 (80.9F) & 1901 (80.6F). This would correspond to a statewide average temperature between 80.1F (1934) and 80.6F (1901), which would only be the fourth July with a statewide temperature at or above 80F.

If the national rankings have already been updated as well, this will be the warmest on record since there were no changes in the rankings (which would only happen if 2012 is to be ranked 118, or warmest on record).

With August taking a turn for the better, depending on your perspective of course, I'm starting to question if this summer will be statistically cooler than either or both of the two previous at Indianapolis. FWIW, the latest CPC 6-10 and 8-14 day outlooks, which take us through the end of the month, have "normal" temps for Indiana. If we plugged in normal temps for August 18-31 for IND, this summer would finish at 77.9º. Of course it's not going to happen exactly like that, but just to give an idea. We'll see.

2012 JJA: 78.6º (through August 17)

2010 JJA: 78.1º

2011 JJA: 77.6º

Here is 80. So.......

I'm not sure what you're getting at to be honest. You said 85 was solidly "above normal" at the end of August...and I replied with IND's average high at the end of August is 83, which is not solidly "above average" to me. We'll agree to disagree on that I guess. But all in a thread talking about Indianapolis specifically, not anywhere else...and with my prior post talking about meteorological summer temps for Indianapolis.

A comparison of the past three summers at IND. Kind of interesting looking at the numbers. The "cooler" min temps of this summer really helped keep things in check, no doubt with the drought lending a helping hand. Though I guess you could say the same, in reverse, about max temps.

Update time...47 right now. Somewhat surprising, only one 90º+ day since August 9 at LAF.

I thought it was 48 or 49 (there's an M day that I count as 90 per Wunderground obs). Anyhow, I suspect my prediction will end up being too high. I wonder what the highest number of 90s is after this date.

Yeah my bad, 48 counting the one M day. And no idea on the second part.

NCDC updated the August and Summer temps/precip for Indiana.

August 2012 was the 37th coldest on record (71.8º -1.0º) and the 33rd wettest on record (4.07" +0.58").

Summer 2012 was the 22nd warmest on record (and 12th driest on record). And was technically cooler than both summers of 2010 and 2011. Who would've thunk it entering this past August?

JJA 2010: 75.5º

JJA 2011: 74.7º

JJA 2012: 74.5º

Anyways, nice whiff of a thread by me. :arrowhead:

Don't be too hard on yourself. The way this summer was rolling along through July, a top 3 looked to be a lock. At least August was bearable.
