Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, January 30, 2014

Thursday cleared up during the overnight, and the temperature dropped a lot more than I figured on as discussed in my post last night. And also I have opted to go with a Trace of precip on Wednesday with 0.1" of snow, to make an event total of 0.02"water equivalent and 0.4" total snow. Thursday was mostly sunny and milder in the afternoon after one more frigid morning, as we rose just over the freezing mark by mid-afternoon. Getting a bit cloudy overnight with some snow out in the mountains but moving NE and not here as it looks now.  The clouds will keep us not as cold tonight, with lows in the mid-upper teens at the lowest. Friday will contithe milder trend, with highs in the low 40s under cloudy skies. Cloudy Friday night with lows in the upper 20s. Saturday should see partly cloudy to cloudy skies, with highs in the upper 40s. Saturday night cloudy with lows only in the 30s. Sunday there is a 40 POP for rain showers and a high temperature in the low 50s. A cold front will drop down late Sunday, keeping things cloudy overnight Sunday with lows dropping into the 20s, then cloudy on Monday as the front stalls out to our south and a 50 POP for rain or snow with highs in the upper 30s. Right now most of next week looks a bit unsettled with chances of rain or snow or a mixed bag most days.  Too much uncertainty right now as to what exactly we will be getting.  But for sure we will be off to a mild start to the new month of February, and the ground hog probably won't see his shadow on Ground Hog Sunday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, January 31, 2014

Friday started out with overnight clouds that gave us an early start to the much-anticipated warmup on the last day of January. Under partly cloudy skies the temperature rose well into the mid 40s, providing a somewhat untypical concluding day to a cold, snowy first month of 2014.  Tonight as we head into the first of February, the temps have dropped back down into the 20s, with low-mid 20s expected by sunrise. Saturday should see a few degrees warmer, highs in the upper 40s, with more sun. Sunday should be cloudy with a 40 POP for rain showers, high temps around 50. Getting colder Sunday night, then an 80 POP for snow on Monday, with highs in the low 30s.  Tuesday should be a bit warmer with rain, continuing into Wednesday with some possible iciness Tuesday night. The rest of the week will be colder with highs in the upper 20s to lower 30s and light snow possible on Friday.  A stormy, unsettled week to start the month of February.  January was a cold and snowy month, and February looks to continue that pattern, perhaps not quite as extreme on the cold temperature side of things as we head slowly towards spring and a stronger sun.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, February 2, 2014

Sunday was even milder than the previous 2 mild days, reaching into the mid 50s, wiping out the traces of snow still holding out through Saturday night. Still freezing to start the day, temps really warmed up quickly. Tonight clouds have come in but temps have been slow to drop, remaining in the mid 40s just after midnight.  Temps should be sliding off into the 30s by sunrise, along with precipitation that will start off as rain and change over to snow sometime later this morning. We are under a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY for 2-5" of wet snow through Monday afternoon.  Temps should remain in the 30s during the day on Monday, then drop into the 20s as we clear out briefly/partially on Monday evening/overnight into Tuesday morning.  Tuesday should be cloudy with highs in the mid 30s, then a 40 POP for rain/freezing rain Tuesday evening into Wednesday and Wednesday eveving - high temps up in the 40s on Wednesday so it mostly will be rain during the day.  Thursday and Friday should turn colder, with highs in the mid 30s extending into the weekend, lows in the 20s. Light snow or light snow mixed with rain (30-40 POP) should be coming in on Friday and through the next weekend.  An unsettled, seasonably cold week ahead with temps right around freezing or just above to make for tricky precip type forecasts.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, February 4, 2014

Tuesday was colder with increasing clouds as our next storm moved in late this evening. Temps only made it up to the mid 30s today, and back down just below freezing this evening as the precipitation started - freezing rain. Almost wiped out trying to walk just a few steps out the back door. It took quite a bit to get back in the house safely. It didn't look glazy out there, but it certainly was. Will have to see how the temps and precip behave overnight as to what happens tomorrow morning for work.  Many thanks to my dog-walker friend Nick who worked on my email today and get it working much better! Tomorrow should warm up by midday into the 40s so at worst I may be a bit late if I can't navigate the icy sidewalks in the morning. We shall see.  Sunny and calm conditions for Thursday and Friday, with temps in the seasonably cold low 30s and lows around 20. Cloudy with similar temps on Saturday then a chance of rain or snow on Sunday and Sunday night, highs in the 30s lows in the upper 20s. Monday and Tuesday of next week should be cold and clear, with highs around 30 and lows in the 15-20 range.

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

Wednesday remained cold overnight, temps rising very slowly
through the low 30s as rain fell and froze.  But by mid-morning,
the rain was starting to erode the ice, but that didn't save me for a
very harrowing walk out to my car from my house, a short jaunt
that turned into quite an adventure. The ride is in was fine, roads
had been treated. And the rain was over by late morning, though
clouds hung around and kept our temps cold all day, with my max
temp for the day reached in the early evening. Tonight a cold front
has blown through, with some good winds and chilling temps
coming in once again. We should be in the 20s by morning, with
highs in  the low 30s on Thursday and Friday under mostly sunny
to partly cloudy skies. Low temps should be in the low 20s.  Over
the weekend we have 40 POP snow chances on Saturday with
highs in the mid 30s and 60 POP for snow on Sunday with highs
once again in the mid 30s. Lows in the 20s Saturday night, then in

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, February 6, 2014

Thursday remained windy and cold overnight, but not overly so.  And the winds abated during the day, as temps slowly rose into the mid 30s amid partly cloudy skies.  Clear skies tonight, and temps have lowered into the 20s once again. We should have a bit more sun tomorrow, and perhaps rise into the upper 30s to around 40, with light winds. Lows Friday night into the 20s once again. Over the weekend we should remain cold with max temps in the mid 30s and lows in the 20s, with chances of light snow Saturday afternoon and also late on Sunday, with minor accumulations of around an inch at best.  Next week looks like a cold start with highs around freezing, lows in the upper teens to lower 20s, with a bit better chance of a more substantial snow by midweek, though that is a long way out and the tracks and patterns have not finalized as yet to say the least.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, February 7, 2014

Friday was calmer and sunnier than Thursday, and a bit warmer as temps reached the 40 level. remained windy and cold overnight, but not overly so.  Cloudy tonight, temps in the mid 20s, might drop off a few more degrees by sunrise, but not very much with the cloud cover. Light snow is tracking this way from parts of TN and KY, and should get here by afternoon with high temps in the low 30s. IT won't amount to much at all, certainly less than an inch. Saturday night still cloudy with lows in the low 20s, then a bit milder on Sunday with highs further up in the 30s with snow showers possible in the morning morphing into rain showers possibly in the afternoon, but remaining quite light as there is not a lot of moisture with this system.  We should start to clear out Sunday night and get colder again, with lows around 20. Monday through Wednesday should remain cold with highs in the upper 20s to low 30s, lows in the teens to around 20.  Milder Thursday and Friday, with rain or snow on Thursday with highs around 40, then low 40s on Friday with partly cloudy skies.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, February 8, 2014

Saturday started out cloudy and cold, with snow-laden clouds above but unfortunately almost totally did not squeeze enough out for the snow to reach the ground except for a few choice minutes around 2:45 PM that I was fortunate enough to observe. Temperatures reached just above the freezing mark in the mid-afternoon. Partial clearing skies with some sun followed soon after that as the small disturbance moved off to my east and north. Tonight clouds have returned some with temps reaching down into the mid 20s. Sunday should reach the mid 30s with clouds and a 70 POP for snow showers that may accumulate up to an inch. A 50 POP for snow showers continuing into Sunday evening with lows in the 20s. Monday through Wednesday should be sunny to partly cloudy with highs of 30 to 35, lows in the 20s. The latter part of the week may feature more clouds with a somewhat increasing chance for snow or rain. Continued high temps in the 30s, perhaps a few degrees further up the scale than what we have been having.  The weekend, however, should slip down into the lower-mid 30s as we continue our colder than normal pattern.

Radar is scattered areas of snow in parts of the Midwest (IL, IN, OH) into central NY State and central PA, and central New England - all areas seem to be tracking W to E - perhaps with a little N bend to it.  Our snow chances on Sunday hinge greatly on the areas out in the midwest right now tracking south enough to catch our area with a few of those snow areas. And those snow areas have to have snow that can reach the ground and not evaporate on the way down through the lower layers above ground.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, February 9, 2014

Sunday was cloudy and cold, with light snow falling for a time from the mid-afternoon to early evening. Temps at the time were around 32 and dropped slowly after that.  Clouds still around this evening as temps have dropped into the upper 20s. We should clear off and remain cold this week, with high temps Mon-Wed around 30-35 with lows in the upper teens to lower 20s. Late Wed and Thursday we have a chance at snow or rain; the track of the storm is still not set so the precipitation type and quantity is still under debate right now. A brief respite on Friday with partly cloudy skies and high temps in the upper 30s, lows in the 20s. Over next weekend, another period of cloudiness, cold temps in the 30s and rain or snow showers are possible. So stay tuned!

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, February 10, 2014

Monday was mostly sunny, breezy at times and cold, with temperatures remaining below freezing all day. Temps this evening are colder, and we should reach the mid-upper teens for the around sunrise low. Tuesday will be even colder, with highs only in the mid 20s, lows Tuesday night down in the low teens. Wednesday should see an increase in clouds with a 40 POP for snow showers, highs will be in the upper 20s. 100 POP for snow Wednesday night, mainly after midnight, with lows in the mid 20s. Thursday looks like more snow (80 POP), possibly being mixed with sleet/freezing rain/ or rain at times, highs in the 30s. A WINTER STORM WATCH was posted Monday afternoon for 5 inches or more of snow/sleet late Wed through late Thursday.  A more defined track determination sometime on Tuesday or early Wednesday will give us a better indication of precipitation type and amount.  Thursday night we should start to wind down and clear out, with lows in the 20s. Friday should give us a respite, with high temps perhaps reaching 40, though if we really get a big dump we could have some snow refrigeration that would keep our temps down for a few days after the storm. We shall see on that. Over the weekend we have another chance at light snow, particularly on Sunday with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Tuesday was another mostly sunny, breezy at times and cold day that we have been having frequently of late. I noticed some high clouds to the south at times, some high level moisture starting to come in from our big snowstorm way to the south. Temps never got higher than freezing today once again, and the ground is cold and frozen, a ground that will be quite receptive to falling snow "stickage" once our storm starts to come into our area Wednesday evening. Overnight tonight should be mostly clear with low temps in the teens. Wednesday will feature sun for a good part of the day, but with increasing clouds, particularly in the afternoon and evening. High temps will once again remain below freezing, in the upper 20s to lower 30s. Snow should start falling sometime in the evening, around 8 or 9 PM, and will pick up in intensity quickly, with our heaviest snow probably falling between 10 PM and 5 AM. Temps will remain in the mid-upper 20s overnight, then rise into the 30s during the day on Thursday with snow continuing, perhaps mixing with sleet at times, and changing to sleet or rain to my south. Total snowfall in my area from Wed eve through Thur eve will probably be in the 8-10 inch range as it appears now, with an equal chance at lower (4-5 inches) and higher (10-12 inch) amounts. Winds will pick up in the evening as the storm cranks up to our north and we get the backside NW winds that will once again lower our temps and dry out the snow some. We are officially under a WINTER STORM WARNING for snow from Wed evening through Thursday evening.  Friday should be sunny and milder, with high temps around 40, allowing for melting to start. We might get a bit more snow Friday night from a clipper storm to our NW, with minor accumulations at best. Over the weekend we should once again cool off into the lower-mid 30s for highs, lows around 20, under clear to partly cloudy skies.  Next week looks to be a bit milder, with some more chances at precipitation but nothing really substantial as it looks right now, but that could change.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Wednesday was Day 1 of 2 for our big snowstorm. Much of the day was sunny and cold with increasing high clouds in the AM into mid-afternoon, when dense enough clouds lowered down enough to block out the sun. Snow overspread the region this evening, it started snowing about 1845 when I was on the highway headed home about 5 miles south of home.  Snow stuck quickly as temps, which had gotten up into the upper 20s by day, dropped down into the mid 20s at the outset of the snow down to the lower 20s by midnight. Cancellations from this winter storm abound, including the Federal Govt offices here in the Washington DC area.  The WINTER STORM WARNING has been extended into Friday morning (5 AM), as wraparound moisture should give us a final shot on Thursday evening possibly intoearly Friday morning. We look to get at least 8 inches, probably 10 actually with the possibility of 12 or more. All depends on whether we get some heavy snow bursts, or if we get a mix of sleet in with the snow which would lower snowfall amounts. The snow should be heaviest overnight, and from 11 PM to 1 AM it was snowing moderately to occasionally heavily at times. Snowing moderately now at just about 2:45 AM. Snow should continued most of Thursday into the evening, possibly occasionally mixing with sleet as temps are supposed to rise to around or slightly above the freezing mark. Wind should be picking up overnight and into the day on Thursday, causing blowing and drifting snow at times.  Gradual clearing overnight Thursday, and a partly cloudy day on Friday with max temps supposed to rise to around 40, which should start the melting process some. The snowpack should help keep the temps from rising too much. Over the weekend we should get colder again with around freezing maximums and lows well down in the teens, helped out by the snowpack, 5-10 possibly overnight Sunday. A warmup after a few snow showers on President's Day Monday, with temps rising into the 40s on Tuesday and especially Wednesday. Lows Monday night may only drop down to around 30.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, February 13, 2014

Thursday was Day 2 of 2 for our big snowstorm, and when most of the important action took place. For the first several hours of the day, light to moderate snow fell, occasionally heavy, and the snow really piled up overnight.  Temps rose slowly overnight, from 23 at midnight to the upper 20s by 6 AM or so, then low 30s by 9 AM and mid 30s by midday. Snow changed over to sleet around 7 AM based on some closeby reports I received, as I was sleeping in with the office closed for the day due to the snow. Sometime in the late morning the sleet morphed into plain rain, keyed in with the thermometer going above the freezing mark. I didn't go out and measure the snow till about 3 PM, when I found 13.5" piled up in my backyard. One of my neighbors reported 15 inches of snow on his cartop at 9 AM, which is a better reading since my 3 PM measurement was after several hours of sleet and rain that compacted the snowpack some. At 3 PM it was lightly drizzling with temps in the mid 30s. The rest of the afternoon remained mild, with occasional light rain, drizzle, and then later on sleet mixed in, then snow started to fall again in the early evening, falling for a few hours till about 2030.  I got another 1.5 inches of snow out of that part of the storm. Temps remained at 33 during the entire time it snowed. Then after the snow ended, the temperature crept up to 35 at observation time at midnight, with winds picking up noticeably in the late evening.  Early this Friday morning the temperature has only dropped back down to 33 under cloudy skies.  Friday should eventually become mostly sunny with highs in the mid-upper 30s. Friday night a clipper storm from the upper midwest is scheduled to pay us a visit and give us a period of light snow late Friday evening (mainly after midnight) into early Saturday morning with minor accumulations possible. The weekend looks a bit colder with high temps in the low-mid 30s on Saturday and around 30 on Sunday, with lows in the teens on Saturday night and around 10 on Sunday night. So with the melting and freezing going on, we should get some real bad icy patches developing around the neighborhood streets. Monday should be a bit milder, a slight chance (30 POP) for rain or snow showers Monday night, then partly cloudy and milder on Tuesday and Wednesday with highs in the mid 40s and lows in the upper 20s on Tuesday and lower 30s on Wednesday. It looks like even milder temperatures may be coming in by the end of the week. So we will have plenty of melting going around.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for
Friday, February 14, 2014

Friday, Valentine's Day, was a recovery day from our big
snowstorm, with mostly sunny skies and much milder
temperatures (well into the 40s) than what we had most of the
week.  The snowmelt process is underway, esp with the mild
overnight temps that we had Thursday and now we also have
overnight Friday into Saturday. Clouds around tonight, and a
clipper may give us a bit of snow later on this morning (100 POP
right now- 1 inch possible) but not really looking that promising
on radar right now in our area. Saturday should see highs in the
low to mid 30s, and that temperature trend should hold through
Monday, with lows in the teens.  Tuesday a majore warmup
should commence, with highs in the upper 40s and lows in the
30s. By Thursday we should be well up in the 50s and by Friday
with rain showers we may be up in the low 60s. Lows should inch
up into the 40s by Thursday. By the next weekend, our snow will
probably be history as it melts off with these mild temps and the
strengthening sun.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for
Saturday, February 15, 2014

Saturday gave us a minor rerun with more snow, but much
lighter, in fact the morning snow didn't really stick around at all,
no matter what surface it was falling on, even the snow from
Thursday. Temps were in the low 30s but above the freezing mark
in the morning when it was snowing, after a cloudy, milder
overnight.  By midday the snow was over, and by mid-afternoon
partial clearing commenced and the temperature rose a bit but
still stayed in the 30s. Later, in the evening temps dropped into
the 20s and the wind picked up and dew points dropped into the
teens, and wind chill temps dropped considerably. Clear now,
temps by morning should reach the low 20s.

Sunday should be mostly cloudy with highs in the 30s and some
scattered snow flurries around. Clear and cold Sunday night with
lows in the upper teens to lower 20s. Monday should be sunny
early, highs in the low 30s, with clouds increasing in the afternoon
and a 50 POP for snow showers late Monday evening/early
Tuesday morning with lows in the upper 20s. Tuesday should
start our big warmup, with highs in the mid 40s. Lows in the 20s
Tuesday night, then Wednesday should see our high temps into
the 50s under partly cloudy skies.  Thursday will be back in the
50s again under cloudy skies with a possible shower or two
around, then cloudy and quite mild Thursday night with lows only
around 50s, then Friday showers around and a lot of clouds, but
quite mild with high temps in the low 60s.  So our snow pack will
be shrinking fast from Tuesday on, and probably be mostly gone
by next weekend.

Saturday's precipitation:  0.03" (LR) M (VP2 - snow is melting
through the gauge now but not worth recording)

now, also light snow is over NE TN, eastern KY, and a bit of
southern OH. Perhaps some of that southern action will be
spilling over here on Sunday afternoon and giving us those
flurries.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for
Sunday, February 16, 2014

Sunday was partly sunny and dry as far as I know, staying about
as cold as yesterday for our mid day high temps, but a bit colder
in the early morning hours.  There were some snow flurries
around at times, but I didn't observe any here at my station.  I had
to make an adjustment on my precipitation amount from
Saturday, details shown below. Overnight tonight it should drop
well into the 20s, then rise into the mid 30s once again on Monday
with increasing cloudy skies, and the threat of more snow late
Monday evening/early Tuesday morning which might give us an
inch. Lows in the 20s, that will be winter's last hurrah for the
week, as high temps on Tuesday should reach the upper 40s once
the precip clears out and the skies at least partially clear. Tuesday
and Wednesday night should see low temps in the upper 20s to
around 30, highs on Wednesday once again in the upper 40s.
Thursday and Friday will see high temps in the low-mid 50s, with
lows Thursday night in the upper 40s with a 50 POP for showers.
A 60 POP for showers on Friday then partly cloudy skies over the
weekend with high temps cooling off just a tad, in the upper 40s
with lows in the 30s. By the weekend most of our snow will
unfortunately be gone.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for
Monday, February 17, 2014

Monday was sunny, dry and cold, max temps in the mid 30s once
again, with increasing clouds in the evening as yet another clipper
system approached from the west.  The snow hit right at
midnight, and is falling the first hour of Tuesday, with temps
dropping through the upper 20s.  We probably will get 1/2 to an
inch of snow overnight total, perhaps a bit more now if we get this
other developing band in a few hours, we will have to see. After
the snow blows out of here by around sunrise at the latest, we
should be sunny on Tuesday with high temps in the 40s. High
temps in the 40s again on Wednesday, then 50s on Thursday with
showers possible in the evening and 60s on Friday with the
possibility of not only showers but convective activity with strong
thunderstorms possible. A bit cooler and clearing out over the
weekend, with highs in the low 50s. Low temps will be in the
upper 20s to lower 30s on Tuesday night but 30s on Wednesday
and then 40s on Thursday and upper 40s on Friday. Quite a
dynamic week with a little bit of everything.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for
Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Tuesday started out literally at the first minute of the day with a
decent snow shower blown about by a decent wind, was quite a
wintry first hour of the day! I think we had another round later in
the overnight, but not a lot. I noticed soft snow pellets
interspersed in the snow this morning on the way out the door to
my car. By the time I was driving in the sun was out and the
temperature was on the way up - and up into the 50s by afternoon
with plenty of sun and melting of the new snow and some of the
old snow too.  But tonight after sunset temps dropped off quickly
in the dry air and was in the 30s by late evening and at freezing
before obs time. There are some showers coming into the area on
Wednesday, a 20 POP for that happening overnight but the radar
sure doesn't show much action anywhere close. Light action
hundreds of miles away to the W and SW will take several hours
to get here, if it does at all. There actually is a freezing rain
advisory out for counties to my north and west for 5-10 AM on
Wednesday, but not for here.  Precip amounts will be light if at all,
and temps are supposed to rise into the 50s once again tomorrow
so any early freezing will be history by mid-morning I think.
Temps will drop down in the 30s Wednesday night and then back
up in the 50s on Thursday, with 60s possible on Friday with a
good chance of mid-day showers and even possibly a
thunderstorm.  The front this is associated with is supposed to
blow throw here that afternoon and drop our temps a bit over the
weekend, but they will still be mild in the mid-upper 40s with lows
around 30. Some indications of further cooling early next week,
and even a chance for snow on Tuesday, but that is a long way
away and much yet to evolve to get a clearer picture on that
system.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for
Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Wednesday started out for me on the ride into work down
Interstate 270. The sky got dark, rain picked up, and then FLASH
- several lightning flashes to illuminate my ride in through
horrendous traffic.  Didn't hear any thunder, but I have always
noticed that it is hard to hear thunder while driving in a car unless
the storm is right there with you, and the thunder is really
booming. Anyway, it didn't last long and skies eventually cleared
and we had a very mild day, well up into the 50s, warmest day
since I hit 56.4 on Feb 2! Still mild overnight, though should drop
into the low-mid 30s by sunrise. Mild on Thursday, but not quite
as much as Wed, as we will have more clouds. A front
approaches late Thursday into Friday morning, with strong
showers, possibly thunder and mild temps into the low 60s.
Cooling off a bit later on Friday evening and into the weekend, but
with upper 40s to mid 50s and at least partly sunny skies.
Probably more significantly colder early next week, stay tuned for
that!

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for
Thursday, February 20, 2014

Thursday started out kind of badly for me on the walk out to the
car - I fell on the black ice and landed in a somewhat cushy
snowbank so I wasn't hurt too bad- just a few light scrapes and
temporary soreness, but the worst part was trying to get back up
and standing. I wound up crawling to my car to get up hanging on
to my door to assist. That piece of black ice melted a lot on
Thursday, and tomorrow morning should be well above freezing.
Sunny day on Thursday with temps back up in the 50s. Temps
have dropped off this evening into the upper 30s, but should not
drop any more, and may indeed rise by morning. Friday should be
cloudy, mild to warm with high temps in the 50s or 60s, mid-day
showers and possibly thunderstorms and brief high wind gusts
also possible. The weekend will be a tad cooler but not by much,
highs mostly in the 50s with sunny to partly cloudy skies. Lows
should be in the 30s. Colder air in next week, with a return to
some snow possible around Tuesday/Wednesday (light amounts),
then colder still towards the end of the week. Highs in the 30s
early in the week, may drop below freezing for highs at the end of
the week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for
Friday, February 21, 2014

Friday started out mild and cloudy, with rain coming in mid-day in
the form of brief windy showers and a tornado watch posted in
the late morning to last till 5 PM. But it was cancelled well before
that. The line of showers was thin and fast moving, and we
cleared out and started cooling down after briefly peaking near 60
in the late morning.  Temps eventually fell into the 30s by late
evening under clear skies. Well to my south, probably a good 80
miles an EF-0 tornado was reported in St Marys and Calvert
counties in southern Maryland. NWS confirmed the existence of
the 18 mile long tracked thunderstorm/tornado with intermittent
tree damage from Compton MD to Cove Pt. Radar from nearby
Andrews AFB confirmed the existence of the storm as this EF-0
tornado.  Anyway, the warm temps and mild rain really melted the
snow and ice down, and my walkway is all free of ice now. Still
have large snowbanks from shoveled snow, so black ice will still
be possibly forming from the snowbank meltwater on nights when
we drop down below freezing. Many thanks for all the well wishes
on my Thursday morning fall. No further ramifications from that
fall since then thank goodness. The weekend should be mild and
sunny with temps in the 50s and lows in the 30s. Next week we
will be turning colder, with high temps dropping through the 30s
mid-week, and posting high temps in the 20s on the last day of
February next Friday. We have a chance at a bit of light snow on
Tuesday and/or Wednesday, but it should not be a major storm.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for
Sunday, February 23, 2014

Sunday was another mostly sunny and quite mild day, not quite
as warm as Saturday but almost. Clouds increased in the evening
as a frontal system approached our area from the NW.  Rain
showers are possibly imminent, also maybe some snow, but not
looking that good for snow for the short term based on the latest
radar and my current temps. Action seems to right on us, but
light and scattered. Snow mostly well to the west and north.
Overnight we will have any action finished well before sunrise,
and it should be a sunny, breezy, chilly drive in to the office in the
morning. Sunny and low 40s on Monday, then dipping down into
the lower 20s Monday overnight, then 30s on Tuesday and
Wednesday with slight to moderate chances for light snow with
highs in the upper 30s on Tuesday and low 30s on Wednesday.
Lows in the 20s. Clearing off on Thursday and Friday, highs in the

of light snow next weekend as we enter into March.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, February 24, 2014

Monday was mostly sunny but much colder, only reaching the low 40s. I had a few sprinkles on the car, but a dry rain gauge so I figured I had a Trace of sprinkles overnight. Tonight it is clear and has dropped into the upper 20s, with clouds expected later and possibly a bit of light snow by mid-morning. Temps will mostly be in the low-mid 30s this week by day, and 20s by night, with another slight chance for light snow on late Tuesday evening/early Wednesday (perhaps a bit more, maybe an inch). Thursday and Friday should be sunny and cold with highs in the low 30s. Over the weekend as we head into March we should remain cold, with more chances for snow. We had a period like this at this time of the year back in 1980, I would like to see if the patterns of highs and lows and the flow aloft are similar to this year. Just have to find the time to be able to study that, unless any of you out there know that information.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Tuesday featured cold and morning light snow, with partly cloudy, occasional flurries in the afternoon, and clearing and cold skies in the evening. Max temps only reached the mid 30s by day, and now this evening and in the overnight temps are dropping well into the 20s. Clouds will be on the increase later on in the overnight, and by sunrise we should have another round of snow starting up - under colder temps (20s) the snow will stick more to everything, unlike Tuesday's snow which didn't really stick to our roads and sidewalks, and what accumulated on the grass melted off by evening for the most part. Wednesday has a winter weather advisory posted by NWS for our area from now till noon. Snow may accumulate 1-2 inches during the critical morning rush hour and cause some travel problems. Later on Wednesday the sun should come out but remain cold and windy, with max temps only reaching the low 30s. Lows Wednesday night around 15, sunny on Thursday with highs in the mid 30s, then drop back down to the teens, then on Friday sunny and cold to finish out February with highs only in the 20s. Over the weekend sunny/partly cloudy skies with highs in the mid to upper 30s, with a mixed bag of precipitation possible from late Sunday through till Tuesday.  This storm is still a bit uncertain as to precipitation type, intensity and temps during the storm so stay tuned! What a way to start the month of March! Looks like it will be starting out like a lion!

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Wednesday featured cold and another episode of morning light snow, with afternoon clearing.  The snow fell in colder temps today than yesterday, so the snow stuck around in more places and for longer today.  Tonight it is clear and cold, with temps falling through the 20s and now entering the upper teens. We should reach the low teens by morning. Thursday should be sunny, cold and blustery, with highs in the mid 30s. Thursday night should drop down further, to around 10. Friday will be sunny and quite cold, with high temps in the mid 20s, one of our coldest days of this month of February. Friday night clouds should start coming in, with lows in the low 20s. Saturday looks cloudy with snow showers possible, highs in the upper 30s.  Saturday night cloudy with lows in the 20s to start out the month of March. Sunday should be cloudy with highs in the 30s, with snow or rain expected.  Sunday night through Tuesday should be cloudy with temps around freezing, and good chances for rain or snow or a mix. Stay tuned on this storm, not sure of the track and the temps that will be critical as to how much we get of a variety of different types of precipitation.  It looks to remain pretty cold after the storm leaves, with highs on Wednesday still in the 30s. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, February 27, 2014

Thursday featured more cold and wind at times, with wind chills dropping into the single digits by midnight obs tonight. Max temps were in the mid 30s on Thursday, but air temps have already fell into the mid teens, and may reach around 10 by morning, maybe upper single digits. The peak wind gust today of 28 MPH was my highest of the month of February.  The wind should be lighter on Friday, but the coldest air is coming in tomorrow, and we should remain in the upper 20s for our max daily temperature.  Temps should moderate thereafter starting Friday night with lows only around 20, then highs on Saturday should be around 40 with sunny-partly cloudy skies.  Sunday should be even milder, but with clouds increasing and rain probably starting in the afternoon or early evening. High temps may reach 50 during the day.  After that we have a major winter storm coming from Sunday night through Tuesday, with snow, sleet, rain possible, stay tuned, depends on the position of the arctic front and the track of the storm.  Stay tuned over the weekend for updates on that. We will be cold again on Tuesday as the storm exits stage to the northeast.  Cold weather looks to persist for the most part for the rest of the week. Models are already forming another coastal storm around Friday that might prove interesting but still way too early to tell.
