Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, April 2, 2014
Wednesday had a few cloudy periods, including this evening with showers just to our west but nothing yet here - but on the whole it was a mostly sunny and mild day with temps approaching 70 for highs. We have a 40 POP for showers overnight, then a 50-70 POP for tomorrow through Friday, increasing chances towards Friday, with high temps in the 60s to low 70s with plenty of clouds around, and low temps in the mid 40s to low 50s, warmer mins towards Friday again.  It should be sunny to partly cloudy over the weekend, with high temps in the 50s to around 60, lows 40-45. Looks to be showery once again at the beginning of next week. Zonal flow is keeping us mild and the cold air bottled up in Canada, with frequent energy pulses coming through regularly to keep us showery at times.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, April 3, 2014

Thursday had mostly cloudy skies, a few early morning sprinkles, but with rain only threatening close by the rest of the day. Temperatures remained mild, but a bit cooler than yesterday with the lack of sun around. Tonight temps remain mild, in the 50s, with showers around, and a 50 POP for overnight showers, though with the current radar it looks like showers will fall elsewhere in the region, but not here. Friday should be mostly cloudy, highs in the 60s, with a 40 POP for scattered showers. Friday night, as a cold front draws closer, there is a 90 POP for showers and scattered thunderstorms, lows in the 50s dropping into the 40s late. Over the weekend we should be a bit cooler, with high temps both Saturday and Sunday 60-65, lows 35-40. But at least it should be sunny to at worst partly cloudy. On Monday clouds and an 80 POP for rain returns, with high temps in the 60s.

Monday was cloudy, cool, and damp, with light rain falling most of the day, winding down in the late aft/eve as drizzle and fog. It was my first significant rainfall in April. Thursday night should cloud up and warm into the 50s, with a 40 POP for showers on Friday with highs in the upper 60s. This evening temps have not dropped off like last night, and are still in the low 60s early this Friday morning. The dew point is still low, but the temperature is not going to drop more than the mid 50s by morning I don't believe. Friday should see mostly clouds, and a 50 POP for showers in the afternoon, raising to a 60 POP by Friday evening. Cloudy with 70s on Monday, rain showers return (70 POP) on Monday evening and Tuesday and cooler, lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s, then later in the week, we should be

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, April 11, 2014

Friday started out warm and dry and continued that way most of the day with the warmest day of the year (so far) occurring with the 82.3° max reading. With a warm min of 59.8 I had my first day of the season with 6 cooling degree days. High clouds were around most of the day, and thickened greatly in the early evening when a broken, weak line of showers moved through the area. I only got a brief, light shower around 1830-1845 EDT, accompanied by a drop in the temperatures into the mid 60s.  Temperatures have dropped off since then into the low 50s, and should be around 50 by sunrise.  Over the weekend we should have sunny, mild to warm weather, with highs on Saturday in the mid-upper 60s and on Sunday well up into the 70s if not low 80s. Lows should be in the upper 40s to lower 50s. Monday should be sunny and warm, with highs in the mid 70s. Rain and clouds should return to the area on Monday night and continue through Tuesday evening (60-70 POP) with cooler temps in the 50s for highs and 40s for lows. Wednesday should clear out but with a noticeable chill in the air, with high temps in the upper 40s. Lows Wednesday night should be in the mid-upper 30s. A gradual warmup on Thursday and Friday, under sunny to partly cloudy skies, highs reaching the 60s by Friday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, April 11, 2014

Sunday was a sunny, warm day - warmest so far this year as we hit the 85° mark. High clouds at times, but sun was strong. And this evening temps are slow to decline, with temps still in the low 70s early this Monday morning. We won't get lower than the mid 60s by sunrise Monday I don't believe. Clouds should be on the increase on Monday, holding the high temps from rising any further than the mid 70s. Monday night showers and thunderstorms should develop, with a 90 POP (late) increasing to 100 POP on Tuesday with more showers and thunderstorms, and dropping temps into the 50s then 30s in the evening with more showers, perhaps a stray snowflake at the very end, as temps by sunrise Wednesday around 30 with possible freeze/ frost conditions. During the day Wednesday we should clear out but it will be chilly, as we should only reach a high temp of 50. Lows Wednesday night should be in the 30s under clear skies, then a slow warmup to the upper 50s by Friday, with sunny to partly cloudy skies - turning more cloudy on Friday. Easter weekend may be cloudy and a bit damp with showers, but it is still early and that could change- stay tuned for updates.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, April 18, 2014

Good Friday was a sunny day, same high temperature as yesterday in the mid 50s, but a bit milder on the low temperature, above freezing in the mid 30s. More of a cloud deck early this Saturday morning with temps in the low 40s, probably will be around 40 by sunrise in a few hours. Temps over the weekend should have highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. 70 and partly cloudy on Monday, then low 70s with a 60 POP for showers on Tuesday, then cooler and clearing out on Wednesday with high temps falling off a bit into the 60s.  Lows should be in the 40s except in the 50s on Monday night with clouds and moisture coming in from

the south ahead of the cold front.

We had a nice dinner at the Park and Dine in Hancock MD soon after leaving Keyser. Rain fell most of the way home, starting while we were visiting the Pancakes. Cool rain with temps holding in the 50s, rain worked its way east and fell most of the evening here in Gaithersburg. We are under a flood watch from Tuesday evening through Thursday morning. Rain is the word for the next few days, through Thursday. Tuesday the high temps should be in the mid 50s, 100 POP for rain, locally heavy rain possible at times. Rain overnight, lows in the mid-upper 40s, then warming into the 60s on Wednesday, with a continued 100 POP for rain, admittedly a bit more showery but still with heavy rain possible at times. Rain continues Wed overnight, then on Thursday rain chances diminish to a 40 POP, with high temps in the 60s as we move into May. Partly sunny skies with no rain on Friday, with highs around 70. Rain shower threat returns on Saturday (40 POP) with highs in the 70s, then partly cloudy skies with seasonable temps around 70 on Sunday.

I didn't post my data here on April 26 and 27 from the road - yet.. If I get the chance I will try and get to it.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, April 29, 2014

Tuesday was cloudy and cool with occasional rain most all day, but with heavier intensities in the afternoon. Fog on occasion, drizzle this evening. Very little temperature change all day, staying in the upper 40s throughout the day. Tonight temps have remained there, with clouds and occasional rain continuing. Wednesday looks to be showery once again, as a warm front slowly moves north through the area. Temps should be cool in the 40s in the morning, but rise into the 60s in the afternoon - with possibly some brightening and perhaps a brief glimpse of sun, but with increased instability caused by the warm, humid air butting up against colder air advancing from the west as a cold front. Showers and possible thundershowers in the afternoon and evening (100 POP on both Tuesday and Wednesday). Flash flood watch out for our area through to late Wednesday/early Thursday. Thursday should be clearing out, possibly a stray shower in the morning, with lows in the 50s and highs in the upper 60s. A partly cloudy day optimistically speaking. Thereafter sunny to partly cloudy skies from Friday through the weekend, with high temps in the mid-upper 60s and lows in the 40s.

I have gone over the data from the past few days that I posted totally based on Weather Underground data for my KMDGAITH11 station that I could access from the internet during the trip. There are a number of minor revisions to the much of the data, mostly just slightly revising the times associated with the extremes and obs for a variety of variables. The 0.01" I reported last night that I thought occurred on Sat Apr 26 was a bogus AM value - if rain occurred it would have had to have been around 2000. If any of you would like to see my revisions, let me know. I have worked them up in a corrected message that I could easily post if interested.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, April 30, 2014
  •

Wednesday was a spectacular end to the month of April.  Heavy, flooding rain fell from time to time most of the day, occasionally with thunder, esp. in the early evening, fog early - temperatures started cool but a warm front approached and passed our area eventually with the temperatures warming all day, with also increasing dew point temperatures that got us in humid conditions by evening. We reached our high temp for the day around 10 PM in the mid 60s, but now we have cooled off into the upper 50s, but with a new shower falling at the current time here in the early morning hours of Thursday (80 POP overnight). There have been flood watches and warnings posted all day, with text alerts on my phone going off several times. Several water rescues for stranded motorists were made in a few of the particularly badly flooded locations in the area. We should gradually dry out on Thursday as we head into May, with just a slight chance (20 POP) for a shower, mostly earlier in the day. Temperatures should continue to warm on Thursday, up in the mid 70s. Friday through Sunday should be sunny and fairly seasonable, with highs around 70 and lows in the 40s to around 50. We should be able to dry out for the first few days of the new month.  By the way, the 4.15" of rain on Wednesday set a new monthly daily record, surpassing the old record of 4.08" set back on April 22, 2006. And the monthly total of 7.66" also set a new monthly total precipitation record, surpassing the old record of 7.50" set back in April 1983.  I believe the great difference in rainfall amount between my LR and VP2 gauges is that the VP2 must be clogged with plant matter, and needs to be cleaned out.

Wednesday's precipitation: 4.15"(LR) 2.83"(VP2) 3.95" Max rain rate (MRR) @ 1309

April total precipitation: 7.66"

April total snow/sleet: T
Seasonal snowfall total: 56.6"
Annual 2014 YTD precipitation total: 19.95"

Other data for Wednesday is as follows:

High temp 64.9° VP2 (2221)
Low temp 47.8° VP2 (0052)
Obs temp 61.4° VP2
Peak wind gust 14 N (0115)
Relative Humidity ranged from a max of 99% (1354) to a low of 96% (0052)
Dew point temperatures ranged from 65° to 47°
Barometric pressure values ranged from 30.19"(0000) to 29.83"(2359)

At midnight obs the temp was 61.4° (VP2), Cloudy, Winds 1 WSW, Pressure at 29.83" and falling, humidity 99%, dew point of 61°.

Current conditions (0211) show 57.5° (VP2), Cloudy/light rain, Winds 3 WSW, Pressure at 29.84" and steady, humidity 99%, dew point of 57°. 0.15" of rain in the VP2 gauge since midnight.

Radar is showing a small area of light showers over my location and a bit to the SW through central Virginia at this time. It should move through over the next few hours. There is a definite diminishing of activity behind this moving up from the S and SW, so we should at least be void of any of the real flooding rains overnight like we had on Wednesday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, May 1, 2014
  •
Thursday was still a bit unsettled and overnight showers added a bit to my 4 day storm total that fell mostly in April.  I hate it when an event spans over two months! <g> Flooding continued in spots through most of Thursday, but my route to and from work was not really affected. So my four day storm total (April 28 - May 1) came out to 5.85".  As reported last night, but significant enough to repeat again tonight, the 4.15" of rain on Wednesday set a new monthly daily record, surpassing the old record of 4.08" set back on April 22, 2006. And the monthly total of 7.66" also set a new monthly total precipitation record, surpassing the old record of 7.50" set back in April 1983.  Thursday had scattered showers around the region during the afternoon and evening hours, but nothing measurable fell here. All of my Thursday rain fell overnight. Temperatures rose into the upper 70s and dew points rose above 60, giving this first day of May a hint of upcoming summer conditions. I am hardly ready for that, never ready for that actually. And I got my first hint from a local TV weathercaster that the end of next week might give us more of a taste of summer, with high temps rising into the 80s if the long-range forecast turns out correct. Meanwhile, the short term forecast is a mostly sunny one through the weekend and into the first part of next week, with high temps around 70 and lows in the 45-50 range. There is a slight chance for a shower on both Saturday and Sunday, but nothing like we experienced here earlier in the week.

Thursday's precipitation: 0.18"(LR) 0.23"(VP2)  0.35"Max rain rate (MRR) @ 0107

April total precipitation: 7.66"
May total precipitation: 0.18"

April total snow/sleet: T
Seasonal snowfall total: 56.6"
Annual 2014 YTD precipitation total: 20.13"

Other data for Thursday is as follows:

High temp 77.6° VP2 (1812)
Low temp 55.7° VP2 (0629)
Obs temp 59.0° VP2
Peak wind gust 14 NW (1910)
Relative Humidity ranged from a max of 99% (0000) to a low of 48% (1821)
Dew point temperatures ranged from 62° to 43°
Barometric pressure values ranged from 29.86"(0905) to 29.69"(1825)

At midnight obs the temp was 59.0° (VP2), Clear/few scattered clouds, Winds 8 NNE, Pressure at 29.79" and rising, humidity 58%, dew point of 44°.

Current conditions (0221) show 55.1° (VP2), Clear, Winds Calm, Pressure at 29.82" and rising, humidity 67%, dew point of 44°.

Radar is showing small areas of widely scattered showers over the coastal areas of southern NJ and Delaware, along with a few more scattered showers further to the north over parts of New England. Nothing headed this way, we should be in a definite drying pattern over the next several days generally speaking. And we definitely need to dry out!!!!
