Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, December 2, 2013

I had one of those combined mental health day along with a bit of gastric distress that kept me home on Monday. Worked a lot on processing November weather data once I got going in the afternoon. Lots to do! The overnight was quite a bit warmer, under cloudy skies. During the day mostly cloudy skies prevailed, with continued mild conditions as we approached the 50 mark for a high temperature. Tonight continues cloudy and mild, with temps still around 40 at 0140. We might drop in the upper 30s by sunrise. Tuesday might see a bit of sun, continued mild with highs once again around 50. Wednesday should be cloudy with high temps in the low 50s, lows above freezing most of the week, in the upper 30s to lower 40s.Thursday may approach 60 for high temps, with a 40 POP for showers to start coming in during the afternoon and lows in the upper 40s. Continued mild and cloudy with a 50-60 POP for rain through Friday night and start cooling down. Saturday should just be cloudy and colder, with highs in the low-mid 40s. Highs in the 30s on Sunday with precipitation probable, with snow, sleet, freezing rain possible.  More on this system as the week progresses.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, December 3, 2013

Back to work day, catch up on emails and all sort of work that had come in the past few days, though not much usually comes in over the weekend. The overnight was again quite mild, under cloudy skies. During the day mostly cloudy skies prevailed once again, with even milder conditions than yesterday as we reached the mid 50s for high temperatures. We did get occasional glimpses of sun, at least I saw some on the way into the office in the morning.  Tonight continues cloudy but a tad cooler, as it is already in the mid 30s, but it probably won't go much lower than that since the dew point is at 35. Wednesday should see more clouds once again, with highs in the mid 50s. Milder Wednesday night with patchy drizzle developing in the area, lows in the 40s. Thursday should see the temp really shoot up after morning patchy drizzle, reaching the upper 60s in the afternoon under cloudy skies. Thursday night late should see rain developing (70 POP) with lows in the 40s, then on Friday cloudy with an 80 POP for rain and gradually cooling off into the 50s, then mid 30s Friday night with a continued 80 POP for rain. Cloudy on Saturday with highs in the low-mid 40s, cloudy Saturday night with lows in the 20s, then a mixed bag of snow, sleet, freezing rain developing on Sunday with highs in the mid 30s (50 POP).  Sunday night into Monday should see more precip (50-60 POP) and cold temps, with more mixed precipitation falling, probably mostly just sleet or freezing rain. Eventually by Tuesday we should clear out and remain cold, with highs in the mid 30s. A complex storm that bears watching, I am sure the forecast will change a few more times before we actually get to the weekend.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, December 4, 2013

The overnight was a bit cooler, but still didn't make it down to the freezing mark, which is about our normal min temp this time of year. Daytime temps were once again in the mid-50s, almost exactly the same value as Tuesday. This evening temps have remained mild, staying in the 50s through the early morning hours of Thursday (current time). We might make it into the upper 40s by sunrise, under continued cloudy skies and possibly some patchy drizzle. A warm front has passed through, and temps on Thursday will be up in the mid 60s with clouds. Rain should develop late Thursday night, and continue all day Friday with cooler temps gradually working into the area, as our high temp of 50 should attest to. Rain Friday night, lows in the 30s. Partly cloudy skies with high temps in the 40s on Saturday, then clouding up on Saturday night and storm 2 should commence with a mixed bag of sleet, freezing rain and snow (30 POP Sat night, changing to a 70 POP for most of the rest of the storm), with temps mostly in the 30s, right around or just above the freezing mark. Eventually the precipitation should change to all rain by Monday before ending Monday night. Highs on Monday in the 30s, lows dropping into the 20s. Tuesday should start clearing off with cold temps in the 30s, outlook for Wednesday right now is clear skies with high temps in the upper 20s, which if it turns out that way may be our coldest weather of the season so far.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, December 5, 2013

The overnight was really warm, staying above 50 with temps actually rising through the night. Cloudy overnight, but then in the mid-late morning the sun started to peep out through the clouds, and by mid-day we had quite a bit of sun, with temps rising well into the 60s in the afternoon hours. It has remained in the 60s all evening and into the early morning hours of Friday. We had some spotty drizzle during the evening, and just had a light shower within the hour (0.02" on the VP2 gauge). Just cloudy again now. Rain is not too far to the west, and should envelope our area sometime in the morning hours continuing through the day. Temps will remain mild overnight, but start to drop off during the day on Friday, as the colder air starts to gradually move in. 90 POP for rain on both Friday and Friday night. Temps on Friday night should drop into the 30s. Clearing somewhat on Saturday with a high of only 40 or so, lows in the 20s. Sunday should turn cloudy and round 2 of the storms should commence as a period of snow, then change/mix with sleet/freezing rain and continued the rest of Sunday into the evening, then moderate overnight and into Monday with just light rain and highs during the day on Monday in the 40s. Tuesday through Thursday should see clearing skies and the most extended period of cold weather so far this season, with highs around freezing and lows in the teens to around 20. It will be quite a drastic change to what we have been having the past few days. But it is December, after all!

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, December 6, 2013

Friday was our wettest December day so far, with warm temps at the outset and then falling temps most of the day, through the low 60s into the 50s then into the 40s and then finally into the 30s by evening. Rain fell in spurts on and off all day, heaviest around 11:00 AM, a bit steadier though pretty light in the evening. Rain continued to fall for a few hours after midnight into early Saturday morning, but has stopped for the past few hours and we should start to dry out, though we still have very high relative humidity right now. Temps should reach the low 30s by sunrise. Saturday should see partly cloudy skies with highs around 40 or so. Clouding up late Saturday night after dropping into the 20s, setting up our frozen precipitation scenario on Sunday. A winter storm watch has been posted for the frozen precipitation starting early Sunday and extending into early Monday morning. We may have a few inches of accumulation of snow and ice on Sunday. Snow should start to fall in the morning, changing to freezing rain or sleet in the afternoon, and quite possibly sticking around into the evening before changing to rain as slightly warmer air comes into the system. 30s for highs on Sunday, holding in the 30s Sunday overnight, then into the low 40s on Monday with light rain. Tuesday through Saturday should see sunny to partly cloudy skies, blustery at times, and cold with high temps around freezing each day, with lows in the upper teens to low twenties each night.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, December 7, 2013

Saturday was our coldest December day so far, with the max temperature barely getting over 40, and the lowest

temps for the day found right at the end of the day, just prior to obs. Light rain fell over the first few hours of

the day, but most of the day was partly cloudy with increasing high clouds noted in the afternoon and evening

from our next storm system that will be adversely affecting the region on Sunday. So far overnight the

temperature continues to drop through the upper 20s despite a thin cloud deck and high barometric pressure

that has remained around 30.56" all evening/early morning Sunday. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for

my home county (Montgomery) and most counties west and north of me from 8 AM Sunday till 10 AM Monday.

Forecast has Sunday late morning as the start time for snow to spread over the area, changing to sleet in the

early PM, then changing over to freezing rain in the mid-late PM and continuing into the overnight, eventually

changing over to plain rain sometime on Monday morning before ending later in the day. Temps will be in the 30s

during the day and evening on Sunday, rising to around 40 eventually sometime on Monday. Monday evening there

is still a 40 POP (prior to that we have basically a 100 POP for precip from Sunday on) Then on Tuesday with

highs in the 30s there is a 50 POP for snow from a secondary storm that they think will be developing at the tail

end of this whole system. Wednesday through Friday will remain cold, with highs around freezing or a bit below

and lows in the upper teens to low 20s. A cold, stormy period during the upcoming week, much more of a winter

pattern which puts you more in the holiday spirit. Snow/sleet accumulations for my backyard and immediate area

around Gaithersburg is about an inch with possibly as much as 2-3 inches if we are lucky to get in the heavier

precip bands while temps are still in the 20s or at least below freezing. A prediction I have also seen is for about

0.25" of accumulated ice during the freezing rain interlude.

Saturday's precipitation: 0.13"(LR) 0.19"(VP2) 0.42" Max Rain Rate (MRR) @ 0027
December total precipitation: 1.43"
Annual YTD precipitation total: 44.86" (I believe this amount has an old error from July that will require adjustment - I am still researching the errors and should be making an adjustment to this amount real soon.)

Other data for Saturday is as follows:

High temp 41.0° VP2 (1315)(RS 40.5°)
Low temp 30.1° VP2 (2358)(RS 29.7°)
Obs temp 30.1° VP2 (RS 29.7°)
Peak wind gust 16 NW (1147)
Relative Humidity ranged from a max of 97% (0104) to a low of 66% (1522)
Dew point temperatures ranged from 36° to 23°
Barometric pressure values ranged from 30.57"(2353) to 30.15"(0015)

At midnight obs the temp was 30.1° (VP2), High Clouds, Winds 1 NNW,  Pressure at 30.56" and steady, humidity 76%, dew pt of 23°.

Currently at 0550 EST I have a temp of 27.9°(VP2), (27.5° RS), Cloudy, Winds 3 NNE, Pressure at 30.59" and rising, humidity 73%, dew point of 20°.

Radar is showing our precipitation activity just to the west, but based on how dry we are right now, I don't think the snow will be reaching the ground for a few more hours till the atmospheric column can get fully saturated. Currently the line between snow and mixed precipitation is on a WSW-ENE line cutting just south of Washington DC from Virginia. Like I said I have my doubts that the precipitation is reaching the ground in the DC region at this time.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, December 8, 2013

Sunday was the day of our first major snow of the season. Not really a lot, just a nice conversational, enjoyable-to-play-in snow that fell in the late morning/early afternoon hours that changed to mostly freezing rain with a bit of sleet around 2 PM and lasted most of the rest of the day. Areas a few miles to my N and W got more snow- in the neighborhood of 6-8 inches in places. We stayed around 26-27 temperature most of the day, but started to rise in the evening up into the low 30s by midnight.  Freezing rain is expected overnight (100 POP) that will be changing over to plain rain by mid-morning in my immediate area.  We are still under a Winter Storm Warning till 10 AM on Monday. Areas to my N and W will stay freezing a bit longer and continue to have travel problems longer into the day on Monday. Precipitation should continue through most of the day (90 POP) and wind up in the evening sometime. We might see another round of snow on Tuesday morning and then we may see some sun in the afternoon. Max temperatures this whole week should be in the 30-35 range with lows in the upper teens to lower 20s. It should be sunny to partly cloudy Wednesday through Friday. Over the weekend we may see more clouds than sun and a 30-40 POP for more snow possible.  A nice wintry pattern to get us all into a nice holiday mood during the coming week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, December 9, 2013

Monday was the calm in between the two storms of Sunday and Tuesday.the day of our first major snow of the season. The day remained cold and damp - I don't remember a day when the relative humidity only varied all day by 1 percent! We had some light freezing rain and rain overnight into the morning hours, then just cloudy in the pm, with fog, occasionally dense, forming in the evening. We had been under a dense fog advisory (till 3 AM) then the WINTER STORM WARNING kicked in at 3 AM and lasts till 2 PM. 4-6 inches of snow is the latest forecast I have heard for this fast moving storm. The snow should be all over by mid-day.  It should be all snow or mostly all snow with just a bit of sleet, more likely to form at the beginning of the storm if at all. It should start in a few hours. Winds remain light. The rest of the week will be cold and dry, with high temps in the upper 20s to lower 30s, lows in the upper teens to lower 20s.  A nice wintry pattern to get us all into a nice holiday mood during the coming week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, December 10, 2013

Tuesday morning started out kind of oddly with very light winds and fog - some dense - covered by a dense fog advisory till 3 AM. I thought that to be a bit odd just before a snowstorms was supposed to start. The light part of Tuesday morning was spent sleeping in since OPM called our offices closed for the day due to the snow that actually had not started to fall yet when they made the decision around 4 AM. While I was sleeping snow fell, but not quite as much as hoped for/predicted. Most of Montgomery County got between 2 and 3 inches. There was a bit more to our north and west once again, particularly up in Frederick and Baltimore counties with around 5 inches. We were under a WINTER STORM WARNING till 2 PM, but it really was mostly over by 11:30 AM or thereabouts. The snow was definitely over by noon or so, and the sun came out in the afternoon. All with light winds, temps climbed a bit but not much - only into the mid 30s. Tonight under clear skies the temps are supposed to really drop, into the upper teens, but so far have only dropped into the upper 20s. But that is cold enough to turn the melted snow water into ice, and getting my rain gauge was a bit scary on the ice.  The rest of the week should be cold and clear - particularly cold and windy with low wind chills on Thursday, with high temps at most up to 30 and lows in the teens. Moderating a bit by Friday then even more on Saturday, as our next storm approaches us with a 90 POP on Saturday and 80 POP on Saturday night, with mixed precip or snow starting on Saturday during the day sometime and continuing into Saturday night, perhaps just rain near the end as some warm air works in briefly. We should be up around 40 on Saturday, but back in the 30s on Sunday under partially clearing skies, then cold and clear as we start the new workweek.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, December 11, 2013

Wednesday morning got me out and back to work. I was worried about the icy sidewalk on the way out to the car

but it wasn't too bad in the morning as I could see where the patches were. This evening on the way in from the

car, it wasn't so easy to see in the dark, and it was quite harrowing. There are dry spots but hard to see where in

the dark. We warmed up under mostly sunny skies today to almost 40 and there was some melting, which started

to freeze very soon after sunset as the temp dropped quickly. Later on this evening the temp stopped dropping

for a while as the wind pickted up a bit and clouds came in a bit, with scattered snow flurries in the area coming

in on our strong ARCTIC front that may give us  our coldest day yet on Thursday, complete with low wind chills on

brisk NW winds at times.  Temps under sunny skies probably won't get out of the mid 20s, and our high

temperature for the day will probably occur during the first few hours of the day. It should be dropping later on

in the overnight and may be in the upper teens or lower 20s by sunrise. Thursday night should see another big

drop, lowering into the teens by early Friday morning. Friday during the day should actually warm up as the HIGH

is moving quickly and sliding off the coast, putting us into a return flow of more southerly, milder air.  Saturday

looks to be unsettled, with possible mixed precipitation or rain, depending on what temperatures we get. Sunday

should clear off and stay seasonably cold with high temps in the upper 30s. Seasonably cold temps should be the

rule in the first part of the new week, with no more storms, clear, sunny weather.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, December 12, 2013

Thursday morning was cold and cloudy, but not as cold as predicted as I didn't drop down into the teens.

Elsewhere some spots did, but the cloud deck overnight and some winds kept things stirred up and it just

couldn't get as cold as expected. I managed to rise to the freezing mark by mid-afternoon, but this evening

temps are finally dropping. Early Friday morning now and the temps are in the low 20s, and we should reach the

teens by morning. Friday the winds will veer around more to the SW direction, and bring in milder air, with high

temps up around the 40 mark. Saturday is still up in the air as far as type of precipitation, though rain may very

well take over by Saturday evening after an afternoon of snow or snow mixed with sleet and minor accumulations

possible. A 90 POP for both Saturday during the day and Saturday evening. Highs/lows in the 30s, not too far

above the freezing mark during the day but around it in the evening/overnight. Thereafter the following days

should be seasonable with highs in the low 40s and lows in the 20s, except for Monday which will be a bit colder

with highs in the low to mid 30s and lows around 20.  No real organized areas of precipitation are expected in our

area after Saturday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, December 13, 2013

Friday morning was cold and somewhat cloudy, temps were cold but not as cold as I had anticipated. Trough the

day we had periods of high clouds, as our Saturday storm started to approach from the south. Friday evening

clouds increased and started to lower, and that kept a link on the temps all evening, slowly creeping up through

the low 30s.  Currently our immediate region is under a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY from 8 AM Saturday to

1 AM Sunday. Snow should break out mid-morning, accumulate a bit (probably an inch or less) then change over to

sleet and/or freezing rain in the afternoon and evening, then perhaps to all rain later on in the evening before

ending. The ever-critical temperatures should remaing in the 30s on Saturday, but generally be above the

freezing mark. Sunday should see a return of the sun and seasonable, with highs in the low 40s. Lows Sunday

night into the 20s. Monday will be a bit chillier with highs in the low-mid 30s, lows around 20. The rest of the

week should be sunny to partly cloudy, with highs climbing through the 40s into the low 50s by Friday, lows

mostly in the 20s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, December 14, 2013

Saturday morning warmed up a bit during the overnight hours as our storm drew near from the SW.  I was sleeping throughout the morning but I did observe light snow (non-accumulating) in the late morning hours. Then around 1530 or thereabouts heavier, accumulating snow started to fall, with big fat wet snowflakes. That didn't last very long, less than a half an hour, but it did accumulate a bit on car tops and the old snow cover. Mixed in with sleet and freezing rain,  the snow changed over thereafter. It continued to warm into the mid 30s (mostly around 34) into the evening, and all the precipitation turned over to just plain light rain. The rain ended in the last evening, a bit before midnight obs. The snow that did fall around 1530 all melted prior to midnight.  Temps are holding just above freezing, and no freezing was noted in the backyard a few minutes ago. It is still cloudy. There are some patches of fog around the region, but none noted here at the present time or before. We might make it down to the freezing mark by sunrise. Sunday should be cloudy in the morning but clear off and be mostly sunny in the afternoon, with highs in the low 40s. Lows Sunday night and Monday night should be in the low 20s. Monday should be the coldest day of the week, with highs around freezing under cloudy skies. Tuesday should start a warm up under cloudy skies, with highs in the low 40s. Lows in the 30s. Wednesday and Thursday should find max temps rising well into the 40s under sunny skies. Thursday night should find clouds returning, milder in the evening with lows in the 40s, then cloudy and mild on Friday, 30 POP for showers with highs well up into the 50s, As they often say,if you don't like the weather today, there is always tomorrow and the next day...

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, December 16, 2013

Monday morning was a damp chilly one, but only a bit lower than the freezing mark. The day hit a max temp only into the mid 30s under partly cloudy skies and a few flurries falling around the area, but not at my location, continuing into the evening. Temps have stayed in the 30s. Over the past hour or so, we got a light snow shower (after midnight obs) that has accumulated a bit on cars, but not on the roads. The snow showers have moved off to the east over the past few minutes. There is a 50 POP for snow overnight and into Tuesday morning. Lows might make it down into the upper 20s by sunrise, then rise up around 40 by Tuesday afternoon with diminishing snow shower chances. Wednesday through Friday should see sunny to partly sunny skies, and moderating temps, in the 40s on Wednesday warming into the 50s by Friday. Rain chances increase on Friday (40 POP late) and then a 50 POP for rain showers over the weekend with temps on Sat in the 50s but lowering to the 40s on Sunday. Lows mostly in the 30s but 40s on Saturday night and perhaps 20s overnight Sunday into Monday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, December 17, 2013

Tuesday morning started out with a surprise light snow shower that accumulated a bit on my car top right after

midnight. By morning, when it warmed from 32 to 33, the little bit had melted. It was a cloudy day mostly,  and in

the evening on the way home from work we had some more light snow showers, with some sleet falling also that

showed up on our car top and also at the top of the fence where my rain gauge is mounted. Very light, and did not

stick to the roads. From radar, it doesn't look like any more will fall overnight. Tomorrow starts a big warmup,

with highs in the low 40s tomorrow rising to 60 by Friday, and into the 60s over the weekend with lows in the

30s on Wednesday rising to the 40s on Friday and Saturday. Sunny through Thursday, then getting cloudy on

Friday with rain showers developing over the weekend, with a 50 POP on Sat increasing to a 60 POP on Sunday,

a 70 POP on Sunday night, then dropping down to a 40 POP on Monday with a cold front finally pulling through and

temps dropping to more seasonable levels early next week, with highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s to around

30.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, December 18, 2013

On Wednesday the morning low temperature was just above freezing, similar to Monday morning. Clouds gave way to mostly sunny skies most of the day as the high temp barely got over 40 by afternoon with good breezes at times, particularly during the midday hour. Wednesday evening the temperature dropped off nicely, and right now early on Thursday morning the temp is in the mid 20s. We might get into the low 20s by sunrise. Thursday will warm with sun up to around 50, above the long term normal for this time of year.  The warmup continues through most of the weekend, with sunny skies through part of Saturday, highs approaching 60 on Friday then into the 60s over the weekend. Shower chances increase late Saturday and especially into late Sunday/early Monday. Gradually getting cooler on Monday, highs back down into the 50s, then seasonable around 40 on Tuesday and thereafter into Xmas. No white Christmas this year for our area!

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, December 19, 2013

Thursday started our major pattern change brought in by a SW flow that will be elevating our temperatures

through the weekend into well above normal values. We soared into the mid 50s at my station, and some spots in

the region reached into the 60s after one more cold, frosty morning in the mid 20s. Some clouds at times, plenty

of sun at other times. SW winds were light most of the day. Tonight the temps have only dropped to around 40

so far, we should hit the upper 30s by sunrise under mostly cloudy skies overnight. Clouds will be the norm on

Friday and over the weekend despite the mild temps.

Friday should see highs in the upper 50s once again, then hitting into the 60s on Saturday. With a cold front

approaching, Sunday should remain cloudy with a 70 POP for showers and even thundershowers possible, with

high temps way up there in the low 70s.  Rain should wind down on Sunday night and start to turn cooler, with

high temps under cloudy skies on Monday around 50. Christmas week thereafter should see more seasonable

temps and dry conditions, with highs in the mid-upper 30s and lows in the 20s on Tuesday and Christmas

Wednesday. Thursday should see a bit of a warm up , with high temps into the low 40s, lows in the upper 20s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, December 20, 2013

Friday continued our big warmup. For the first time in almost 2 weeks (13 days) my low temp for the day was

above freezing. We will be having more of those overnights through the weekend and next Monday. Temps

reached the mid 50s once again, and tonight has only dropped into the mid 40s early this Saturday morning. We

probably won't get any lower than the low 40s by sunrise. Saturday should see temps soar into the 60s under

cloudy skies. Temps will only get down into the 50s overnight Saturday into Sunday, then on Sunday warm up even

more into the upper 60s or lower 70s. Record high temps for my station are 60 on Saturday and 64 on Sunday.

Record high mins on both days is 45. So it may very well be a record-setting weekend. Sometime Sunday we

should be getting showers and thunderstorms in our area ahead of an advancing cold front out of the midwest.

Overnight Sunday should start cooling off some, but only into the 40s. Monday should see max temps back in the

mid 50s, then drop into the 30s in the evening. Rain showers should be ending sometime on Monday, under cloudy

skies. Tuesday and Christmas Day Wednesday should see sunny to partly cloudy skies, slight chance of a little

light snow on Christmas Eve Tuesday, with high temps in the much more seasonable mid-upper 30s with lows in

the 20s. A bit of a warm up thereafter on Thursday and Friday, probably somewhere into the 40s for highs and

upper 20s to low 30s overnight. No real chances of organized precipitation at the end of the week. It looks bleak

for getting a white Christmas in my area this year.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, December 21, 2013

Saturday continued our big warmup into record-breaking categories. I set an all-time daily record high temperature for Dec 21 at 69.7 which rounds to 70, old record was 60 so it was a significant record.  My morning low of 45.6 (rounding up once again to 46) also set a record high min for Dec 21. Already during the early morning hours of Sunday Dec 22 I have set a daily record max temps, as I have a current temp of 69.2 that breaks the daily record for today of 64.  Mostly cloudy, high types mostly, but just a while ago, NWS put us in a severe thunderstorm watch area till 10 AM Sunday.  There is a line of showers and thunderstorms marching eastward fairly fast from the hills of WV not too far to my west. Cloudy and a 70 POP for showers and storms on Sunday, mostly in the AM and then late PM, with a high temp in the low 70s. BTW my all time December record high temperature is 76 set back on Dec 6 and Dec 8 in 1990 and 1998 as best I recall   Rain overnight Sunday and into Monday, gradually cooling off with lows in the 40s Sunday night and highs on Monday around 60. More seasonable weather (and of course dry as it gets colder) on Christmas and Christmas Eve, with high temps around 40 and lows in the 20s. Should be dry, no real chance for a White Christmas in this area. A bit of a warmup after Christmas Day but not that significantly - probably will have high temps in the mid-upper 40s and lows in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, December 22, 2013

Sunday continued our big warmup into more record-breaking categories. I set another all-time daily record high temperature, this time for Dec 22 at 69.9 at 7:12 AM, normally when I have my low temp for the day. This value rounds to 70, just like yesterday, with the old record of 64  set back in 1990 so it was a significant record.  My incredibly high low temp for the day of 61.3 (rounding down a bit to 61) also set a record high min for Dec 22, and a new high min record for the entire month of December, surpassing the old record of 59 set on the 7th and 23rd in previous years.  Dew points reached the mid 60s, I was sweating most of the day!  Morning showers falling between 7 and 10 AM (roughly) contributed 100% of the total amount for the day. More showers on the way overnight and into a good part of Monday, there is a flash flood watch posted for our area. Temperatures will slowly drop off the next few days, down to seasonable levels by Christmas Eve. There is a slight chance for a bit of light snow on Xmas eve night, but nothing significant. We should be in the 30s for highs and 20s for lows on Christmas Day, with mostly sunny skies. Seasonable temperatures should be the rule the rest of the week, and remain dry.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, December 24, 2013

Tuesday was our coldest day in a week, going back to December 17. Clouds were prevalent at times, particularly in

the afternoon when a few snow showers passed through our area/regions from the West to the East.

Unfortunately only trace amounts fell at my location. Temps stayed in the 30s, then dropped into the 20s in the

evening. Early this Christmas morning temps are now in the low 20s under clear skies, with upper teens likely by Christmas Morning sunrise. Christmas Day Wednesday should be sunny and cold, with highs around the freezing mark. A bit of clouds Wednesday night into Thursday, with lows in the 20s and highs on Thursday moderating a bit to around 40. Thereafter through the weekend it should be sunny to partly cloudy with a slow moderating trend, as high temps start out in the low 40s on Friday rising to around 50 by Sunday. Lows should be in the 20s on Friday rising to the low 30s by Sunday. No real organized areas of precipitation expected in the region during the period.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, December 25, 2013

Christmas Day Wednesday was our coldest day in almost 2 weeks, going back to December 12. Santa was good to me with lots of great stuff, including a new wireless weather station (Lacrosse model C84612) that, once up and running fully, will be used as a backup to my current VP2. Right now I have the clock set, the barometer and temperature up and running.  The rain and wind speed/direction still needs to be setup. The internet connection for the data is partially setup with the gateway connected, but I have not configured it yet. The outdoor temperature sensor is partially installed, I want to monitor it a bit before I screw it permanently into place. Stay tuned for updates on the full installation of this new backup system. It was a mostly sunny, cold Christmas Day with the low temperature of 19.8 matching my lowest temperature of the season that was previously reached on November 25 and December 13.  Tonight we have dropped into the mid 20s early this Thursday morning, with the likelihood of reaching the low 20s by sunrise under cloudy skies. An area of light snow to our west and north in PA and WV just now poking into far western MD may make it over the mountains and give us a bit of light snow showers in the daylight morning hours. Skies should clear in the afternoon with temps warming up a bit into the low 40s. Lows Thursday night back into the 20s, then back up into the low 40s on Friday under mostly sunny skies. Over the weekend some clouds at times but warming up a bit more, with high temps reaching the upper 40s on both Saturday and Sunday. Cooling off a bit into the low 40s early next week with partly cloudy skies. Lows overnight should be in the upper 20s to lower 30s. There still is no real organized areas of precipitation expected in our area through to the end of 2013. I might add that for me, the most notable acquisition on Christmas was getting a new computer mouse. The right clicker on my old mouse worked intermittently at best, and gave me fits clicking on it many times till it worked. The new mouse makes a world of difference and streamlines greatly my actions that require that right click of the mouse, which I use quite a bit.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, December 26, 2013

Thursday was cold and cloudy in the AM, with some light snow showers coming through as suggested by the late night radar I was looking and discussing in my Wednesday weather message email/post. Nothing measureable, and I didn't actually see it snow myself, but others in the immediate area said that it had snowed while I was sleeping. The sun came out thereafter and maintained its presence the rest of the daylight day. Temps warmed into the mid 40s. This evening temps have dropped off through the 30s, but so far has been yoyoing between the upper 20s and lower 30s. We should be mostly clear overnight, with lows in the mid 20s by sunrise. Friday should be mostly sunny with highs in the mid 40s. Friday night clear and seasonable, with lows in the mid-upper 20s. Saturday should see sun and milder temperatures, with highs somewhere in the 50s, then clouding up Saturday evening/overnight, lows in the 30s, with rain showers expected to fall off and on on Sunday with highs in the upper 30s as a coastal LOW tracks up the coast. Cloudy overnight Sunday, lows in the 20s, then clearing on Monday with highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s. Tuesday and New Years Day Wednesday should be sunny and cold, with highs in the low-mid 30s and lows around 20. Closing out the year with a little bit of everything.

Sunday was milder and rainy, particularly through the early afternoon.  Really didn't get any more rain after about 1300 early Sunday afternoon. Some moderation over the weekend, with highs back up in the 30s to around 40, lows mostly in the 20s. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, December 30, 2013

Monday was mildest in the morning, with clouds and light sprinkles (around 9 AM when I was on my way to work) then gradually cooled off to around the freezing mark at midnight obs time along with partially clearing skies. It has been holding around freezing through the first few hours of the last day of the year under cloudy skies.  The last day of the year should find high temps in the low 40s under mostly sunny skies, then a high of around 40 on New Years Day under mostly sunny conditions. New Years Eve should be dry and clear, lows in the 20s. Thursday starts to get interesting with clouds and a mix of rain and snow, highs in the upper 30s to low 40s then changing to all snow Thursday night with lows in the 20s (70 POP).  A 30 POP for continued snow on Friday and quite cold, with highs in the mid 20s. What should be our coldest night of the season if it pans out on Friday night with lows around 10. I will believe it when I see it. Saturday should be sunny and continued cold, with highs in the low 30s. Sunday more clouds come in with another warm up, highs in the 30s with a mixed bag of precipitation possible. Snow may fall Sunday night, then rain or a mix on Monday - quite a busy pattern as we move into the new month and year.
