CAT5ANDREW
Snow and wind combined, this was the most intense snowstorm of my lifetime with 60+MPH gusts and sustained winds over 40MPH I believe.Does anyone have the hourly obs from the airports? As strong as JAN 1996 and FEB 1978 were, they fell short of offical blizzard status. The Boxing Day storm not only met the criteria,it surpassed it by a decent margin. My neighbor who was lucky enough to experience both the NYC and Chicago storms said they were pretty much equal where he was. While JAN 1996 dumped more snow here in Queens, the winds were below what the Boxing Day storm had. What are your thoughts?

dbc
now that is why it is better than January Blizzard of 1996.... '96 never met the standard. It depends where you were. Down in Howell, NJ we met blizzard criteria easily in 1996. I can definitely vouch for at least sustained 35mph winds for many hours at the height of the storm. '96 never met the standard.

JAN 1996,I was able to walk straight despite the wind and heavy snow and I was able to get pictures. The Boxing day storm,I could not see in front of me at times. The snow felt like sand and the wind gusts nearly knocked me over several times.I had my face and head completly covered and yet it was like I had nothing on.The snow was completly sideways the whole time,it was like a derecho with snow, that is my way to describe it. Even though ENJ had more accumulation they did not have nearly the sustained winds and wind gusts that we had in the boroughs.

I know in Philly, it was a blizzard for sure. I am longing a 30 hour December 2010 storm, with the rates that exceeded JAN 1996 since NYC metro got 24-30" in an 18 hour period, add another 1 foot? I can say with complete confidence that December 26 Blizzard was the most intense storm I have ever seen, I went out at 11 PM, at its peak, just incredible experience. Basically December 2010 for Northern NJ and NYC Metro was a bit windier version of the 1996 Blizzard for the eastern half of central and southern NJ but for both regions the respective storms verified as blizzards. CAT5ANDREW
What really seperates the Boxing Day storm from ALL the rest is the 55-60MPH winds we had for much of that Monday with clear sunny skies.I have never seen winds like that AFTER a HECS. Chris L
dbc, also some incredible snow totals for your area in Mommouth County with Dec 2010... 31" in Belmar, several spots over 24". Basically a carbon copy of '96.

earthlight
December 2010 was the best storm of my life, and it's not even really close. Obviously as far as regional impact, '96 stands alone. But here, December 26 2010 takes the cake by far. We had in excess of four hours of sustained blizzard conditions and topped 30 inches of snow. The banding sat directly over us, the impact was incredible. The dramatics leading up to event, the severity of the synoptic situation, the timing with the holiday, it was everything you could possibly ask for. It was awesome experiencing that entire thing with all of you guys. When we move forward into other winters, everybody will talk about '96, '03 etc...but for me December 2010 is the storm which most will be measured against (unfairly so, lol!). ag3
Winds was awsome for Boxing day but for Queens, Jan.26-27 was a much better snow producer. Hardest bands set up right over Queens. Boxing day was just west. I will never forget the pounding snow on the night of Jan. 27th. Epic scene. 9 lightning strikes total with loud thunder also. I will never forget this radar image for the rest of my life: 12:30 am, January 27. 2"-4" an hour rates for 3-4 hours:

Lol, you got it all covered. I actually lived right next to my office in Jersey City from Fall 2001 - Winter 2005 after living in Madison, NJ for Summer 2000 - Summer 2001 but was working in downtown NYC most of that time. Chris L
IMO, the best storm SHOULD have been February 5-6th 2010..... NOW THAT would EXCEED JAN 1996 if slammed us. No freaking doubt! Baltimore Burbs 30+ Philly got 28.5", the burbs 27-30+ For Christ Stakes, Elkridge Maryland, SE of BWI had 38.2"!

I agree with you 100% John.I never thought that FEB 1978 and JAN 1996 would be surpassed, but this one did by a healthy margin. It was a great way to end what was nearly the hottest year on record for us. Chris L
For me, December 2010 is #1 because of the ABSURD rates and winds and, of course, measuring around 24 inched of snow. But the real winner will be when we get a Catagory 5 Blizz a la March '93.

Basically a carbon copy of '96. Chris, best storm of my life in Monmouth County. Recorded 25" in Colts Neck, beating PD II by 1", and only several inches behind the 96 blizzard. What impressed me the most was snowfall rates -- snowing to beat the band at 2-3"/hr from 6pm to 1am with snow depths basically shooting upwards before your eyes. I had about 5-6" on the ground at 6pm, then 22" by 1am. Winds also great w/ gusts past 35mph throughout the event, and temperatures in the 20s. Isotherm
I didn't see any lightning in the blizzard, and actually the Jan 26-27 storm was the most impressive one I've seen since Dec 03 in terms of lightning output. Bright flashing and loud thunder for 10-15 minutes during that late jan event. We've had a great stretch.
