CAT5ANDREW Posted February 28, 2011 Share Posted February 28, 2011 Snow and wind combined,this was the most intense snowstorm of my lifetime with 60+MPH gusts and sustained winds over 40MPH I believe.Does anyone have the hourly obs from the airports? As strong as JAN 1996 and FEB 1978 were,they fell short of offical blizzard status.The Boxing Day storm not only met the criteria,it surpassed it by a decent margin. My neighbor who was lucky enough to experience both the NYC and Chicago storms said they were pretty much equal where he was. While JAN 1996 dumped more snow here in Queens,the winds were below what the Boxing Day storm had. What are your thoughts? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Down in Howell, NJ we met blizzard criteria easily in 1996. I can definitely vouch for at least sustained 35mph winds for many hours at the height of the storm. '96 never met the standard.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />JAN 1996,I was able to walk straight despite the wind and heavy snow and I was able to get pictures.The Boxing day storm,I could not see in front of me at times.The snow felt like sand and the wind gusts nearly knocked me over several times.I had my face and head completly covered and yet it was like I had nothing on.The snow was completly sideways the whole time,it was like a derecho with snow,that is my way to describe it. I know in Philly, it was a blizzard for sure. I am longing a 30 hour December 2010 storm, with the rates that exceeded JAN 1996 since NYC metro got 24-30" in an 18 hour period, add another 1 foot? I can say with complete confidence that December 26 Blizzard was the most intense storm I have ever seen, I went out at 11 PM, at its peak, just incredible experience. Agreed the winds were more impressive with December 2010. The winds in 1996 were no slouch though. I had 7 foot drifts when I was living in Howell, NJ in the 1996 blizzard. But here, December 26 2010 takes the cake by far. We had in excess of four hours of sustained blizzard conditions and topped 30 inches of snow. The banding sat directly over us, the impact was incredible. The dramatics leading up to event, the severity of the synoptic situation, the timing with the holiday, it was everything you could possibly ask for. It was awesome experiencing that entire thing with all of you guys. When we move forward into other winters, everybody will talk about '96, '03 etc...but for me December 2010 is the storm which most will be measured against (unfairly so, lol!). I agree with you 100% John.I never thought that FEB 1978 and JAN 1996 would be surpassed,but this one did by a healthy margin.It was a great way to end what was nearly the hottest year on record for us. What impressed me the most was snowfall rates -- snowing to beat the band at 2-3"/hr from 6pm to 1am with snow depths basically shooting upwards before your eyes. I had about 5-6" on the ground at 6pm, then 22" by 1am. Winds also great w/ gusts past 35mph throughout the event, and temperatures in the 20s. Tom, I was watching the windows by deck, it was just a stunning progression of creeping it up. 4 PM it really got going, then around midnight, I had about 18 inches on the ground.
