The blizzard of 83 was the first big storm that I remember. 7 years old and the snow seemed like it was up to my neck. Not in reality but that’s the way I remember it. After that storm I was hooked...snow was better when all you had was bob ryan and a noaa weather radio. You didn’t know the winter sucked until it was spring...

If we have some semblance of the SSTs posted above leading into late fall I would have a pretty good feeling....regardless of the technical enso classification. IMO, the one thing that really faked us out last winter (and all the climate models) was the SOI and MJO. The lack of response by the atmosphere to the SST was very frustrating. I recall reading late in the winter that things had finally coupled but by then it was too late. Looking at the image above it looks like trop forcing would be biased in the areas we want. Long way to go and sst can warm/cool pretty dramatically over the next 3/4 months.

Heading north on 81 between Chambersburg and Carlisle. Just missing that cell to my West. Pretty impressive looking surprised it's not warned Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk

5.23” imby for the month of July...occurring in 6 separate days. Not bad for July. While we could use another soaker here soon, the grass, weeds and underbrush are still lush green. All of the rivers and larger creeks around the area are at the high end of summer flow levels. Perfect conditions.

Crazy to loop the 3k at high speed... What convection there is gets thrown at us from all directions in the next 60 hours. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk

2019 Mid Atlantic Lawn, Garden, Pool, etc. Thread

I don’t disagree with any of those cons to not tilling. Here is the key, IMO....the constant addition of organic material to a piece of ground will create that “relatively “ loose soil that is optimal for root structure. The maintaining of an organic ground covering prevents scorched earth and promotes a healthy population of earthworms and other insects which further enhances healthy soil and a non compacted soil....not to mention the preservation of the microorganisms by not tilling. Go into a hardwood forest and stick a shovel in the ground...it’s easy digging for the first 10-12” (besides the roots). This takes time to cultivate but a healthy balance can be achieved. I have yet to water any of my gardens this year and the production has been plentiful. In no way am saying one approach is better than the other. I have just found that the time and elbow grease involved in managing 3 large gardens has been greatly reduced with this method. We have been able to achieve 100% organic by stopping the constant fight against nature....but it has taken time and many fails. -

I have implemented a no till approach to our gardens for the past 3yrs and the health has returned. I think there are pros and cons to tilling. The idea of mimicking large scale farming in home gardens is not necessary, imo. Mappy’s winter time brush pile is the key....if she didn’t till, I would thing she would have same results come summertime. Mimicking the forest floor > mimicking large scale farming. -

I use the plopper regularly during the summertime. It has been very successful for both smallmouth bass and largemouth. On Saturday I hit the reservoir that is just north of Cumberland Maryland and was able to snag 8 nice largemouth on the plopper as the sun was coming up. It is definitely my go to lure for early morning and late evening fishing. -

A bit disappointed after returning home from vacation. Hornworms decimated 6 of our tomato plants....still have 8 healthy plants but the ones that were eaten were full of green tomatoes when we left. On the menu this evening... potato salad with red and green onions and herbs, green beans sautéed with shallots and a tomato/cucumber salad . All from the garden... chicken on the grill to top it off. -
.53" for the week. Would have been a shutout if not for a random overnight storm earlier in the week. PA continues its streak...

With leopard slugs like this roaming around it's no wonder I don't have any cabbage plants left. On a positive note, it's been a banner herb season so far. Drying oregano, parsley and dill. My wife also made a large batch of pesto to freeze. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk -

That’s a great resource...much appreciated. I don’t think I have anything to lose by applying a sulfur based fungicide throughout the summer. If I can limp them along until fall I can then be proactive next spring. Apparently, it affects peach trees as well...which I have 3 new peach trees in close proximity. No sign of the fungus yet though. Thanks again... -

Any fruit growers in here? From what I gathered from researching this look like “apple scab.” A fungus that starts in the early spring but has recently just reared it’s ugly head on 80 percent of our apple tree leaves. My question is, is it worth treating with a natural fungicide now or is it too late? That’s the question I a, having a hard time finding the answer to. -

Man! I have tried the beer in shallow dishes with no success. I did read that different beers produce different results....they dont like any Flying Dog beers, thats for sure. Would have thought the high yeast content would have attracted them. Fortunately they just like the dark greens...summer veggies aren't affected. -
Definitely looks like hail in that nasty cell near HGR. Maybe a little rotation starting? See if it tightens up some.... ETA...the PA severe magnet in full effect.

Just shy of 1.25" from that one storm. Tributaries are high and muddy around the area. Will have to see if that next batch contains some decent convection as it traverses WV. We may be looking at flash flooding becoming a concern as the eve wears on... Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk

The split is starting to look real based on radar.... Not just DC but most of the area. Still soupy out but now overcast. No severe to make up for PA rivers getting jacked for my fishing trip next weekend makes it tough. Juniata should look like a chocolate milkshake for the next week or so. Not nearly as impressive as some of the pics shared here recently. But, for my backyard this is as good as it gets. Being in a valley with large trees surrounding our property it's rare to get a shot of a good storm before it's right on top of us. This storm stayed about 5 mile to the north and offered a really impressive structure and tons of lightning.

Light to mod shower passing through right now. Going to be a hot soupy mess once the sun comes back out. Perfect memorial day weekend weather imo. Steaks on the grill and kids running thru sprinklers in the yard. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk

Had tornado warning yesterday eve with a pretty nice radar representation....couplet scooted about a mile just to my NW but still had a gust of 41 out of the East. Very ominous look and feel outside. Took a drive this morning but didnt find any damage and havent seen any reports of damage. .89" in the gauge this morning.

Being bearish is one thing...outright discounting the possibility is foolish. Im not a severe guy but follow when things are a little interesting....this is one of those times. Somebody will see a severe level storm tonight.
