  1. Smelled very smokey here this morning near 7:30 A.M. I have not checked,  but with the winds NW makes me wonder.
For a couple hours it was a very strong smell.

I noticed it all day and the hrrr smoke graphic this morning showed a patch swirling through midday.

  2. The Catoctin Cloud Factory has been doing a pretty good job at keeping it partly sunny here today.  Otherwise, another beautiful day.  Not much aside from drizzle here yesterday, but I noticed the 270 Split Storm Magnet did really well again.

I got under some back building from that Loudoun county storm. Picked up close to half an inch. Hope you finally get some up your way.

The skies have opened up here.  Actually, kind of getting beeline'd by this cell rn.

  4. Storms forming to my SW.  But I can already see one cell sliding up 81 just to my east, literally a 1/4 mile.  This NE trajectory usually leads to heartbreak for me.

Radar looks outstanding out that way.

Went out to take a look at our looks like it could rain but… Anyways can actually hear thunder off of that one to my NW. Besides that thunder it is absolutely still quiet out. No birds, no breeze.

Definitely very humid and can hear thunder in the distance. I just feel like we do better with blue skies and building cumulus towers. Today there’s been all layers of clouds it seems.

But maybe the humidity wins out and we finally get a good soaker.
  6. If this muggy weather has done any good it is for the blackberries. Got back just before the sun started peaking out. We were told pick as much as you want. And wow we did. There were some we could not get to unless we wanted to get into the thick of it.

  7. Sounds like I got the same as amount of rain as you. Had some thunder and thought without looking at radar we might get a decent soak. 0.02” and just a lot of clouds.

We might need to rely on the stuff nearing Hagerstown.
  8. I understand the frustration, but the flood/flash flood watches are to encompass entire counties that are within an area that have favorable conditions for flood prospects.

The pattern recently has been less about organized cell clusters and more about more localized convective schema, so these are probably the ones that are extremely annoying to see for those that miss out. I do feel we probably issue too many in these parts (That’s my personal opinion which is just that at the end of the day), but today is actually a day where it is justified. The concern today will be initiation spatially, because if you miss to the west on initiation, you’ll get nothing and areas downstream should get hammered. Hopefully everyone in the sub gets something today. This environment is very ripe for efficient rainfall makers.

I just noticed that I’ve been under a couple of these watches and haven’t had much, if any, rain. It is a remarkably humid pattern and I know that when it rains, it can torrent, but think it’s ultimately been more sporadic than a watch should justify. Today seems more ripe.
  9. Wondering if they could create a new category like "isolated flood advisory" which would be for potential of isolated flood warning/ flood emergency events.  Save the flood watches for the potential of widespread flood warning events.  Otherwise, everyone is going to start ignoring these watches.

    Agreed.

  10. What radar were you looking at?  There were a bunch of storms along and east of 95 in the 12-3 window.  I had one pop up overhead that dumped 1.15", with over an inch in less than 20 minutes.  Sure, it wasn't widespread as Saturday, but there were definitely storms around that were profilic rainmakers.

I was under a flood watch and pretty sure I didn’t receive a drop of rain. I mean, it is what it is lol
  11. If you get under one of these cells, it's intense. I received 0.64" of rain in 15 min from a cell today. Also, some of the mesonet soil moisture probes are showing fully saturated soils. For example, our flood sensor on Cabin John Branch at Bradley Blvd showed a 5 foot rise in 40 minutes on Saturday. If that storm over Potomac persisted for another 20 to 30 minutes it would have been real trouble.
This absolutely justifies the flood watches, IMO.

I get all that, but radar was a lot of nothing today.
  12. We heard that down here as well. Had no idea anything was even out there. Here it is from my back deck looking N.

It’s actually backbuilding and now literally on my doorstep lol

  13. Ended up hiking Billy Goat this morning (first time in a while). My drive home would have been a disaster if I hadn’t brought another shirt to wear. Looks like I went at the right time because the 270 split microclimate is cranking again.

Also, have heard some decent thunder in the last few mins, but looks like that cell might stay to the north.

  14. Yeah, but this is better than last summer's hell of drought and awful heat, even if the humidity is a little higher.

100%. This area is not meant to be dry with a northwest wind on a daily basis.
  15. Another miserable hot humid day.
And WTF happened to the midweek cold front?  Forecast is now low 90s everyday through Friday.  I have a 5PM outdoor wedding in Bel Air on Thursday.  Just wonderful.

The humidity has been wild this summer.
  16. Went to get a practice sesh in at a local court and ended up playing 1v1 and then a couple games of 2s.  The ice water I drank when I got home was a religious experience.

We are in the midst of one of the more powerhouse humidity-laden summers in recent memory, certainly since that 2017-2018 combo.

You think that line that is building back near Winchester will hold into here? I was trying to understand why we were under the Severe T Storm watch and Flash Flooding watch. Am guessing for the potential for the second round up here?

Looks like it could roll through, but I'm not too hyped on round 2's.  I feel like we want to strike while the iron's hot (aka when the atmosphere is ripe).
