I believe the biggest snowfall ever recorded at Pearson was 39.9 cm/16” back on Feb 25, 1965.

And Environment Canada is relying more and more on volunteer observations these days to help fill the gap with the elimination of manual official weather observation stations in the last few years, such as Buttonville Airport in Markham, ON. Buttonville is currently an automated station, like downtown TO.

I believe it was Nov 1940. YYZ recorded 41.1cm/16.2".

Edit: Jan 1966. YYZ recorded 43.9cm/17.3"

    Thanks :)

No, still kicking around.  Boring winters since 2019-20 so not much to post about.  Our seasonal snowfall has been above average but no storminess.  Just pocket change...up until this one.

The Nov 2020 storm was good. Widespread 7-9". Biggest Nov storm since 2002 and biggest one day total since Nov 1950.

One last thought on this storm. The GFS nailed the NW trend a few days ahead of every model and within 24-48 hours the NAM/RGEM nailed the placement of heaviest snowband. The GEFS were completely worthless and the OP GFS had a consistent track for 4-5 days before the storm hit.

Would you say the Euro did well too? The NAM flip-flopped a lot run to run.

Storm total at YYZ was 13.5” (34.4 cm)

5.2 cm/2.0” late in the evening on Jan 16

    29.2 cm/11.5” for Jan 17

The automated station in downtown Toronto recorded a maximum snow depth of 36 cm/14.2”.

Not surprised at YYZ's numbers anymore. I'm surprised with all the meteorologists in Ontario, they don't complain about YYZ's reporting and don't do anything about it.

Regardless, Toronto will remember it as a top 5 or top 10 historic storm.

Measured 18" at my place. Downsview recorded the same amount.

Everybody in the neighbourhood agreed that was the most snow they have ever experienced by far. Never seen anything like it before in Toronto.

Same for me. Many places around my area recorded between 17-21". Amazing storm, glad it pull through.

It's too bad YYZ only recorded 13.5". What a joke.

Every picture, every tweet/FB post everyone says over 40 cm fell. Not Pearson. For some odd reason. Lol. To me personally from a far looks like 14-18” fell

I went for a small drive. Roads are a mess but even eye balling you can tell its well over >14". Some localized areas in Toronto got 20-24".

The downtown station recorded nearly 5" in one hour.

YYZ is the worst reporting station for snow.  No way the city got just 9". No way. The two cars in our driveway are almost buried. The snow is up to my waist even away from the drifts.

Yeah YYZ is a joke. As of 12pm they had 12" (32cm).

I measured 17", could be more because it certainly feels like it. Most places in Toronto saw between 15-20".

Curious to see if it challenges the record from December 1944 (19") although YYZ observations are lol. It most certainly is the largest storm for them since the Blizzard of 1999.

As of 12pm YYZ reported 12.6" (32cm). Might add on another inch or two once it's all said and done so no, it'll fall short of that record cause YYZ is lol.

But most places in Toronto saw between 15-20", some locally higher. I measured 17".

Are people staying home today?  There’s a show on The Weather Channel here called Heavy Rescue 401 that basically follows heavy wreckers as they clear accidents on the 401 in Ontario. They state that the 401 in Toronto is the busiest highway in North America.

Most people have been working from home since March 2020, including me. Schools are all closed today.

They say it's the busiest highway in the world.

Manual snowfall measurements at the downtown TO station at the University of Toronto stopped after the 2016-17 winter season. The automated station at the same location is still there and it takes temperature, precipitation and snow depth readings.

Oh okay thank you for clarifying. Is there a reason why manual measurements stopped? Budget constraints? Would've been cool if they continued especially for a storm like today.

Congrats to the Toronto folks.  Most snow storm forecasts for T.O. fail, so nice to see this deliver for you guys.  Must be chaos there now.  I can only imagine the 400 series highways right now.

I think even London is scoring with this storm, no?

Yeah my friend had to go into the office today to pick up some paper work. Normally takes him 15-20 minutes via 427 but he's still not there and it's been an hour.

It’s pouring snow here in downtown Toronto. I’d say at least 4-6” fell between 6-7 am. Looks like another 4-6” as the deformation zone pivots across the GTA.

Which explains why EC issued a blizzard warning. A near perfect set up and purely synoptic. Another 6-8" is definitely possible.

Did the Toronto station (the one that went back to the 1800s) stopped reporting?
