How do you read this? Looks interesting and resourceful

KBUF - station identifier (Buffalo airport)

    120254Z - date and time of observation (12th at 2:54 Z = 9:54 PM EST)

02011KT - wind direction and speed (020 degrees or NNE at 11 knots)

    1/2SM - visibility (1/2 statute mile)

    R23 5000V6000 FT (runway 23 visibility variable 5000 to 6000 ft)

SN FZFG (obstruction to visibility in this case moderate snow and freezing fog)

VV009 - not sure what this is

M03/M06 - temperature and dew point in Celsius

    A2995 - altimeter reading (29.95 inches)

Most wintry early November period incoming since the Little Ice Age...

November 9,1995 I closed on my house. I drove up the thruway in a snowstorm from Canastota west. KSYR got 7.9 inches that day. November 1995 is the snowiest November at Syracuse with 34.2 inches.

  3. It’s been an interesting afternoon here weather wise. First Syracuse broke 80 degrees for the first time in over 200 days.  Then thunderstorms fired up to the west and moved through Onondaga County. Each one produced heavy rain and the last one spawned a tornado warning. I haven’t seen any confirmation that any damage occurred yet. It looks like things are winding down now but it was pretty wild for a while.

Edit:  It was 256 days since the last 80 degree temperature in Syracuse or 8 1/2 months.

  5. It’s been a mixture of rain and snow here for about the last hour. It looks on radar like the precipitation is building in from the north. I don’t anticipate any accumulation during the day and we’ll see what happens tonight. It’s hard to get excited about 6 inches this time of the year when you know 50 degrees and sun on Sunday is going to melt most if not all of it.

Don't forget the important team there, Clarkson.

You must be a Clarkson alum, I’m a Cornell grad. Cornell and Clarkson could meet in the finals on Saturday. Cornell won 5-0 in Ithaca and they played to a 2-2 tie on a late Clarkson goal in Potsdam. It would be a good game but first Cornell needs to beat Brown and Clarkson needs to beat Harvard on Friday.

  7. The ECAC (Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference) hockey tournament is in Lake Placid this weekend. Cornell is playing in it. The teams are probably getting there today so they should be alright but any fans coming in over the weekend might have problems.

Could be a couple/few inches for the higher elevations especially if it comes in overnight..

Looks like the heaviest precipitation for us comes in the middle of the afternoon. Boundary layer will be above freezing so little accumulation, especially on the lake plain. Looks like a good hit for the mountains of New Hampshire and Maine.

This looks right on par for my area but not so much for the lake shore.

I’m in that little patch of dark blue (4-6 inches) that extends into northern Onondaga county which is about right. Had a wind shift to southwest this morning that has pushed the temperature here into the upper 50s and dew points into the mid 40s which has sped up snow melt.

Snowpack is completely gone here. Nothing but piles leftover in the parking lots. Amazing how much better retention you guys have over there even at lower elevations compared to WNY.

You don’t need to go too far south of here to find little snow outside of piles. Several factors have contributed to the retention of the snowpack here. First of all we have received over 2 feet of snow over the last couple of weeks including nearly 16 inches on 2/26. Also, the pack that was on the ground before the new snow over the last few weeks was a glacier, almost all ice. But the biggest reason to our snow retention is the relatively cooler temperatures here. While western NY and even downtown Syracuse were in the 60s to near 70 yesterday I stayed in the 40s most of the day. I woke up this morning with the temperature at 42. This is what my neighborhood looks like this morning. Some bare ground is beginning to show but snow cover is still about 95%.
