  1. 53 this morning, a shock to the system. High of 79 yesterday, would’ve been in the 80’s if not for the smoke.
  2. Looked like that here a few hours ago, my initial thought was smoke, but since it was somewhat cloudy earlier I wasn’t sure. Sky here is blue right now though.
  3. Had some thunder and lightning this morning, not much though. 2.20” here.
  4. Ok that was arguably the heaviest rains I’ve ever driven, it stripped away the remaining RainX off the windshield, and there are literal lakes on the sides of the LIE, never seen that before. Had to launch through flood waters just to get home, no other route (because Suffolk...). 2.08” so far, highest daily total by far this year, but it’s the short time frame that makes it more notable.
  5. 0.29” so far here, no heavy rains yet, should reach here in 10-15 minutes. Under a Flash Flood Warning now.
  6. NYC, LI’s south shore, and the jersey shore are one of the warmest spots on the east coast right now north of the Outer Banks. Low of 61 here, currently 74. 83/59 yesterday.
  7. Almost identical here, 88/71 today, 80/68 yesterday.
  8. 85/67 here. I can take this all year round.
  9. I’d normally start feeling depressed around this time, but that was before September was upgraded to an official summer month.
  10. Shaping up to be the warmest summer on record there, already one of the hottest cities on Earth as it is. I wonder if the people there even notice since it’s extremely hot whether it’s AN or BN. Crazy to have the warmest July on record in both PHX and NYC (LGA) on opposite sides of the country. Feels highly unusual.
  11. I can’t imagine how 130 might feel, I’ve experienced 120 degree heat indices, but humid heat and dry heat are two different beasts. I’d argue that humid heat is worse, but both are dangerous, 130 is lethal. And imagine not getting a severe thunderstorm warning in 14 years, yikes. I always complain about Long Island’s lack of thunderstorms compared to the rest of the region, but Christ that must suck.
  12. Is it bad that I’m jealous of Iowa and Illinois right now? We just had a strong Tropical Storm not even a week ago and I’m bored.
  13. Speaking of bugs, I was stunned to see so many bees flocking to my potted Southern Magnolia, which bloomed for the first time last week. Apparently they LOVE this species (according to the internet). I rarely see bees here so it was a nice sight, furry bees and non-furry bees alike, many of them looked very young too. Tropical Storm Fay blew those flowers off the tree but there’s more on the way, hopefully the bees come back. Magnolias are living fossils, they’re very ancient and predate most trees and also bees and other common insects. Southern Magnolia flowers smell divine btw, one of my favorite trees, glad they can grow here.
  14. Yeah I left that part out lol, I’m so accustomed to both gunshots and fireworks that I can tell which one is which. Subtle differences, but after a while you can hear it. Way less gunshots here in LI than in Queens though.
  15. Am I the only one that finds it soothing? I’m from Jamaica, Queens, anything too quiet feels suspicious lol. The humming of Air conditioners, Cicadas, fireworks and ice cream trucks = sounds of summer.
  16. Thanks and good riddance. I had no idea the radar was was that close to the obstruction, literally walking distance.
  17. That obstruction near the OKX radar gets on my nerves.
  18. Have we ever seen a major hurricane stay in one spot for as long as this one has? This is basically Dorian right now:
  19. My only ice storm memory is of the Jan 1999 ice storm in the DC area, it was serious, the landscape looked very alien, all trees and power lines sagged in ways I’d never seen (and still haven't seen again), I recall one power line encased in thick ice dangling right in front of the window just a few feet away. This event was also my earliest weather memory.
  20. I hit 105 in Queens, highest temperature I’ve ever experienced. Newark (and maybe LGA) is definitely going to hit 110 one of these days. Old Bridge, NJ hit 110 back in 1936.
  21. I felt it, I thought I was off balance initially but I noticed clothes hangers swaying back and forth. Swaying not nearly as noticeable as the 2011 quake, that was enough to wake me up out of my sleep.
