  1. Is that Cobble Hill in Brooklyn? My sister lived there for many years at 341 Clinton (?) Ave. No idea why I can remember that address!
  2. Agreed. I think the only thing we'll experience up here is Steve posting pictures of some unremarkable swells from Misquamicut.
  3. For the next few days, Dorian should experience some fluctuations in intensity, and in addition to eyewall replacement cyclone, the interaction with the northwestern Bahamas should weaken the hurricane slightly. After 3 days, as Dorian moves northward along or offshore of southeast United States coast, the shear is forecast to increase, resulting in a more distinct gradual weakening.
  4. Does anyone know when Levi updates his Tropical Tidbits discussion? With the track steadily inching eastward, I'm becoming mildly interested.
  5. What a hoot if this went from being a likely FL landfall to Newfoundland one instead. Just a minor miss.
  6. I'm planning to overseed this weekend. To be sure I have the steps right.... 1) mow today a low setting (bagging not mulching) 2) seed/starter 3) do I need to rake for overseeding? Can' really see what's taking place with existing grass. 4) water 5) for overseeding, how long do you wait before you mow again? Thanks for confirming/redirecting any of the steps above.
  7. Thanks. How do you approach it? Cut low, rake/seed/fertllize and just not mow for the next few weeks (with watering of course)?
  8. When do folks seed in the fall? I'm thinking September 1 will allow for 6 weeks before anything more than a surprising frost comes in.
  9. Wow. I would tend to be with the over-watered crowd. These don't need to be watered daily--perhaps every 2-3 days after transplant. However, the fact that this all happened in 3 days sounds like something more dire. Like you spilled some Round up on it.
  10. We did the same. I think we got a Red Sunset, but it might be an October Glory--forgot what we went with. I do know we got it at about 15', I'm eager for it to get another 5-8 to better block the neighbors. I guess that'll be 2-4 years of growing.
  11. Nice--world of difference! I mow a 4" height so hopefully that'll suffice.
  12. Thanks. The lighting in the pictures masks the hideous barren spots. I don't think I'll be completely confident in it until next spring.
  13. While I"m sure it will continue to fill in, I think the grass is in enough to recognize I need to do some additional seeding. What are folks thoughts on this--any reason to wait until after a first mowing to put it down? I'd rather get it in in the next couple of days and perhaps hold off on mowing until 2 weekends from now (maybe even longer depending on how it looks).
  14. The new grass is growing unbelievably fast. Just from this morning to tonight it went from things you needed to search for (like my picture from earlier shows) to now having large patches of greenish tint. I just finished watering.....eager to see what happens over the next 24 hours. One thing that's kind of a bummer is that I'm not able to move the sprinkler to the center of the new area without walking through the other areas. So, I might find I"ll need to do some additional work on that after the other areas take hold.
  15. The seed and starter fertilizer were only put down a week ago today. fingers crossed.
  16. Watching grass grow may be a recipe for tedium. Knowing that it is growing is reason for celebration.
  17. We have two chestnut trees (they're behind the garage in an overgrown area so they hardly are even noticed. I only did because I saw their blossoms. I'm not sure if they're american chestnut or horse chestnut. I'm no intending to walk through the poison ivy to find out.
  18. It does the trick! I'm happy we have some cool (or at least not hot) wet weather the next few days to help with the germination. I have quickly accepted that any efforts to keep her from walking/peeing/pooping in the seeded area are doomed to fail.
  19. Thanks! I wish I could take credit for it, but we hired out for it. If I didn't have a wedding to pay for I'd be up for getting more plants.
