Yeah that 3/2 storm sounds right... I remembered it being bigger threat than 5-10 though. Wasn’t that a QPF bomb? I feel like I remember folks talking Dec 1992 threat. Instead you had to go to like 2000ft in the Catskills. On your second paragraph, was it that it wrapped too much maritime air in it? Bombed out too early and flushed Atlantic air to ALB? Trying to envision the synoptic evolution.

I love Will’s memory...can always put me in my place pretty fast haha. What you just described sounded like that storm (was it last winter or the one prior?) where everyone was modeled to be near 0C but with very heavy precip everyone assumed it would be snow...instead it was 3-feet like west of ALB but never flipped over for most of New England. I think Ray was adamant about that one as it was in his seasonal forecast.

All the big busts for pretty much anyone west of 495 in Mass all the way into NY State include storms that turned into whiffs. I feel like in the coast there’s a mix of storms that ended up being rain or whiffed to the east...but once into the interior it’s almost unheard of to be forecast 1-2 feet less than 24 hours out and have it bust because it rained 1-2” instead. Every memorable bust in the interior is “we were expecting 14-20 and got 3 inches of arctic sand.” I’m sure there are some good ones that include sleet but rare to just miss 1-2 feet because it rained. Usually it would come with a big front end or backside snow in those situations too. But whiffs are when you get the true 15” to 3” type expectations.

A sure sign of the time of year is when the Trail Crew starts their mowing operations... big lawns but historically the bulk of the vertical growth is done by now, wild flowers have bloomed, grass is high and it's time to start prepping the trails for winter. Mowing makes it possible for some to ski this stuff with 6" of October snow. Absolute bluebird today. Not a Cu in the sky.

Hike followed by a dip in the river, as often as possible. Dog cools off by rolling around in any mud, then gets a rinse in the river. A muddy dog is a happy dog. The cold water flowing off Mansfield is a perfect way to cool down on these more humid 80 degree days. Been swimming in the backyard pool daily... there's a surprisingly good sized area 5-6 feet deep, in the river right behind our place. Summer as it should be.

@Typhoon Tip my post had literally nothing to do with your thoughts. I hadn’t even read your posts to be honest, I just briefly saw something from Ray about larger events occurring recently, and chimed in. I should’ve read the whole long winded exchange in here but honestly it wasn’t directed at anyone or meant to “railroad” you. Just left it there.

And it’s been widespread too...even back to ALB and BTV in the interior have had a large proportion of their biggest snowfalls ever since 2000. And they have large POR. And not only that, both ALB and BTV have had seasons with multiple top 15 storms in them. Even with measuring differences between now and ages ago, to get 10 of 20 highest snowfalls in the past 18 winters at BTV is remarkable when the POR goes back to 1800s. Even some big QPF events too, like Valentines Day 2007 was BTV’s largest February frozen SWE.

Summer 2019 New England Banter and Disco

Surprised you need a crock pot in SNE. Given the unmitigated torch this summer, I figured you could just put it in a bucket and leave it outside to cook, ha. -
Some stoke... relaxed powder turns on a storm day through the Mansfield hardwoods.

Ski The East had a similar post, used a photo of mine from a past October I think. I love this time of year through November... the ski stoke slowly builds until mountains open.

Congrats dude! The owners of Tres Amigo have done a great job in the past couple years. The remodeled and modern interior, to go along with good food and drink is pretty sweet. It's a good Mexican option in town. Add in the Creeme stand along the Rec Path and the business has a good opportunity. Also, Rec Path etiquette drives me insane on those bridges...First come first serve. The group already on the bridge has right of way, whether walking, running, biking, rollerblading, whatever. Yield and let them come all the way over before starting.
-
Off-topic but were you and the family biking the Stowe Rec Path last night? I was walking my black lab and waited at the end of one of the bridges for a family of bikers to pass and it looked like it might have been you and the wife. Only reason I wasn’t sure is your boys looked so old! If it was you, wow they grow up fast, ha. It was the bridge just downhill of Sushi Yoshi... I’m back there on the river towards the end of that dirt road you cross at Tres Amigos.

Been dry for a bit but finally got another soaker yesterday with the storms. Severe wind damage in an axis from Barrows Rd by the Stowe High School (trees down across the road) and it continued to Holmes Lane and Shaw Hill near the Lower Village with trees/wires down. Pretty much most of the town lost power yesterday as the transmission lines run through there. Ended up with a solid soaking rain though, the CoCoRAHS station near the village center had 1.17”, but I’m not sure where the other Stowe station was that had 1.55”. Up to 4.22” on the month, probably close to average for a summer month is roughly 1”/week?

Congrat's dude. Finally going full send . -
Earlier today... a summer vibe type of view.

This popped up out of no where over Mansfield. Torrential rain at the ski area.

Dendrite posted some departures that blew my mind... like +5 to +6 for MHT and PWM or something like that. How in the world is it so high above normal in that part of NNE? Over this way it’s: MPV... +0.9 MVL... +0.3 1V4... +0.2 So basically normal, but you can tell the MVL/1V4 ASOS spots that radiate a bit better are likely leading to that extra few tenths of a degree. Just crazy at how high above normal some other New England stations are.

Yeah man... was 80/50 this afternoon while hiking and it was perfect. When the humidity stays down, there's a big difference between sunshine and shade. Direct afternoon July sun is plenty hot at 80F, but step into the shade when the dews are low and it feels chilly comparatively.

When the shadows creep... it's pretty crazy how much different the feel is between sun & shadow this time of year. In the direct sun it feels hot and humid, but in the shadow it feels almost chilly as there's a breeze under the Cu shadow. -
A list of the top CocoRAHS precipitation totals for May and June... it was a wet period but a lot of it was convective in nature. Plenty of nice weather mixed in there too. 14" near the center of Stowe.

I mean that is on another level of being wrong. Wow, that didn’t age well. -
My car is covered almost daily in a green coating, so much so that I need to run the wipers before pulling out.

The state of Vermont put out some photos of the Stowe landslide in the Cottonbrook area and man, it's pretty impressive. I still don't get how this happens, it's like the earth just ripped out 25 feet deep and the entire side of the hill avalanched. Just tossed the trees like toothpicks. Fascinating report from the State Geological Survey... https://dec.vermont.gov/geological-survey/hazards/landslides/cotton-brook "The main, active landslide area encompasses approximately 14 acres but cracks and scarps in the woods indicate that there are many other detached blocks. There is a high potential for additional failure and trails have been impacted."

It is funny how you can tell now where the snow was the last to melt. Even up higher on the mountain you'll come across some area where the hobblebush doesn't even have buds on them, while the ones 15 feet away are fully green... and you know there was a giant drift or rotting pile of snow that just melted within the last week or two there. This shot from over at Spruce shows where all the snow piles have melted over the past couple weeks...any ground that's not green right now, is recently melted out ground.

Beautiful up here with sun now. About to head out on a hike after the Farmers Market this morning...turning into a real nice day.
